A U.S. Postal Service employee died early Tuesday morning in Miami while trying to recover a dropped cell phone from a storm drain.
The freak accident occurred just after midnight at the USPS' Miami Processing and Distribution Center on Northwest 72nd Avenue. Police said 70-year-old Shelby Wing was walking across the parking lot when he accidentally dropped his cell phone into a storm drain, then fell into the drain after he removed a manhole to reach for his phone, reports WSVN.
"He fell in the manhole trying to get his phone and he drowned," a coworker who didn't want to be identified told NBCMiami.
Wing's family told WSVN that he was supposed to retire but stayed on the job to cover for vacationing colleagues.
"He's a wonderful man, the greatest family man anybody can ever ask for," said his grandson Ricky Munne.
"Postal employees are deeply saddened by the passing of their co-worker, who was a dedicated employee for more than 25 years," said USPS spokeswoman Debra Fetterly.
