Prop 8 Unconstitutional: Ellen DeGeneres, Jesse Tyler Ferguson, RuPaul And Other Celebrities React To Ruling

Ellen Degeneres

First Posted: 02/ 7/2012 3:13 pm Updated: 02/ 7/2012 3:19 pm

In what has been hailed as a historic decision, a federal appeals court declared Proposition 8, California's same-sex marriage ban, to be unconstitutional, upholding Judge Vaughn Walker's original 2010 ruling.

Needless to say, Twitter lit up almost immediately with responses from gay celebrities and their many allies.

Tweeted Ellen Degeneres: "Today we took another step towards equality. #Prop8 was found unconstitutional again. I couldn't be happier."

RuPaul's sassy reaction was more to the point: "Prop 8, sashay away."

Check out how Kelly Osborne, Jesse Tyler Ferguson, Cory Monteith and other celebrities also reacted to the Prop 8 decision below:

it is unconstitutional...it's pretty obvious too. Just another reason why the repubs should let it go, and why Ron Paul is the only one over there with any sense or reason. Seriously, how is this any different than women being allowed to vote or other minorities. If the surpreme screws this one up, we seriously need a true revolt...stupidity in the upper levels of gov is out of control.

Gawd, if the GOP spent 1/5 the energy on the Economy instead of trying to stop marriage equality, we'd be a Country better off then ever.

We're not out of the woods yet people! The SCOTUS is the same bananas who allowed Citizens United -- our work is not done! Don't set the date yet Brad & Jolene ... lol

Great to see so many influential people on board. I'll be sure to pay more attention to the ones I already liked, and check out the ones I didn't. Like minded folks gotta stick together.

How stupid.. we all are free to marry. PEACE.. do you really have peace and hope down deep in your soul.. you question this when your by yourself and with yourself .. maybe late at night or during the day by yourself... Equal means in judgement. We are going to be judged equally. Look what is happening to syria... They have stopped fearing God.. and took God out... With this gay and lesbian thing on the rise... that is taking God out. WE WANT GOD TO PROTECT US. or what is happening in syria will happen here.. God says so in his Word.

I'm not sure if you're for or against Prop 8....Could you write in English next time, and not idiotese?
02:41 PM on 02/08/2012
Of course your not going to understand. The Bible says so...read it...than you will understand... Prop 8 does clarify marriage to be between man and women.. but trying to consitutionalize it..is not constitutional... because the constitution defines freedom for all of us to choose...thats what America is about. Its God who we answer to one day. We are turning our backs to his ways and we will have to pay.. Doing what is right by Gods terms brings the greatest peace within our souls..

See, this is what your side still doesn't get. It's not a "thing", they are people! As long as you continue to see gays as an abstract idea instead of the people they actually are, we will keep tuning you out. What's happening in Syria is the people overthrowing a dictator. Why you want to defend such a person is beyond me. And, no, what is happening in Syria will not happen here because we are already a democracy.

Yes, I know they are people that is what is sad.. because people have real feelings and its not a peaceful joyful lifestyle deep within. I have friends and relatives gay and lesbian.. they are not happy deep within... Read your Bible.. it is the map of life.. it has already predicted what is happening right now in the world... :)
02:44 PM on 02/08/2012
But that is not what 'they' are doing. Nor is that the real reason you tune them out. You tune them out because they say what is to you an inconvenient truth.

Have you seen pictures of their huge fantastic estate? Its amazing. Really amazing. All this from a career in entertainment, comedy, tv shows, specials, a movie, and her tv show. Its just amazing that this industry would pay so incredibly well. Television and movie and music distribution is such a leveraged way to make money.

OK, now that we have your vocational aspirations out of the way... how do you feel about the subject matter?

You know, the little discussion we're all having here about the federal appeals court declaring today that Proposition 8, California's same-sex marriage ban, to be unconstitutional.

This was expected news and a happy one to know that our courts know the difference between bigotry and Constitutional Rights. The Bigots are still going to take this on appeal, but they will eventually be put in their place and sent packing, back to their unhappy lives to devise another way to restrict Constitutional Rights on other minorities. This has crystallized religion for me in realizing just how I would never fit in with their small minded thinking and their hate of others. I am sure Jesus would be ashamed of these groups. Nothing, according to his teaching, singles out others for hatred and bigotry and the Constitution strictly forbids such aberrant behavior. The Supreme Court will see the fallacy of their silly argument and we will finally be able to carry on with our lives without others poking their nose or opinions in our private lives…..enough has been enough.
02:45 PM on 02/08/2012
Will you be praising the courts for their knowledge when SCOTUS overturns this 9th Circuit panel's decision?

I'm not so sure that will happen. The decision was very carefully crafted to use the rationale that Justice Kennedy used in the Romer v. Evans and Lawrence v. Texas cases. Kennedy is the swing vote, and I'm not sure he'll be able to disavow reasoning that he himself has championed over and over. It'll be interesting.

Karen Handel, the bigoted and homophobic VP of the Susan G. Komen For The Cure foundation resigned, Prop 8 was ruled unconstitutional, Roland Martin was forced to apologize for homophobic tweets. And to top it off, Madonna announced a world tour. Gay people really DO rule the world!

Equal protection, 9th amendment, Separation of church and state, laws being an assertion of one's faith imposed on another as majority bigotry towards the minority a.k.a. tyranny of the majority are all reasons this law fails in what is justice and freedom for all. Liberty it seems is a banana we primates are still unable to peel because our ancient inclusion of now false precedencies based on mythologies that were again based on false assumptions of fearing the unknown and revering it as a god to be bartered with. Love and be kind to one another, and love-not fear, nor call fear god and hope to sacrifice your neighbor upon your alter of self-exaltation.
