Runway To Win Event Gets Support From Scarlett Johansson, Anna Wintour & Plenty Of Designers

The Huffington Post   First Posted: 02/07/2012 9:36 pm Updated: 02/08/2012 3:42 pm

The GOP? "Totally unfashionable!" Scarlett Johansson told us. The Obama campaign, on the other hand, has gathered up fashionable friends in spades.

With just two days till New York Fashion Week, plenty of designers (and a few stylish celebs) turned out to fete President Obama's Runway To Win initiative at the Theory store on Tuesday evening.

"I think the designers are going way beyond the call of duty, turning out tonight when they really ought to be back in their showrooms working," said Anna Wintour, who co-hosted the event with Scarlett Johansson and was smiling more than we've ever seen her smile. "I think it shows how devoted they are to the president that they're all here tonight."

Wintour was also joined by Jim Messina, campaign manager for Obama for America. He gave stirring remarks calling for Obama's reelection, but he did admit one shortcoming: "I have no fashion sense," he confessed.

Luckily the rest of the crowd had fashion sense to spare. Wintour was sporting a orange Thakoon scarf, the one designed for the Runway To Win collection ("I'm trying to get Jim to buy one!" she quipped) and designers such as Georgina Chapman, Tory Burch, Diane Von Furstenberg, Prabal Gurung and Lazaro Hernandez of Proenza Schouler all weaved in and out of the bustling crowd in style.

Of course the belle of the ball was Scarlett Johansson, who delivered her remarks in a black Stella McCartney number with a perky peplum and sheer sleeves. As a fashion plate herself, we wanted to know what ScarJo thought about the First Couple's style.

The president and the first lady are fine, Scarlett told us: "I think they both have a casual cool about them." But there are some hopeless cases in the Republican party. "They are so totally unfashionable!" quipped Scarlett, in response to the Republicans' cheesy ad attacking the Runway To Win campaign as "ritzy" (and a similarly critical article in Monday's Wall Street Journal).

The most unfashionable of them all? Rick Santorum. Scarlett told us:

"I mean, sweater vests are, I guess, charming for family photos and dinner with the grandparents... But I think you [can] wear a sweater vest ironically, right? Just go to the Lower East Side!"

Unfortunately Santorum lives nowhere near the Lower East Side. And his sweater vests are woefully non-ironic.

But why focus on bad political fashion when there's so much good to speak of? In her remarks, Johansson outlined the president's accomplishments over the past four years and reiterated that there's much more work to do.

"I understand that people are upset, they want change and they want it now," Johansson told us. "And change takes time. Not only does it take time, but people have to be active, you have to participate."

Prabal Gurung told us that he shares Johansson's views. "My focus is right now on the positive of the campaign," he said, "which is to make sure that my support for the president is full, 100 percent. Because my belief is, if I'm going to complain about the lack of change in America and the economy, I need to be part of it."

Runway To Win is just one part, as the proceeds from the items sold -- tees designed by Prabal, Proenza Schouler, Marc Jacobs, tote bags designed by Derek Lam and Tory Burch, a scarf by Thakoon, and more -- will go to the Obama for America campaign.

keep-politics-out-of-fashion

I am sure I am not alone in the distaste I feel when fashion gets politicized....hey Republicans - just note the designers - Thakoon, Prabal Gurung, Mark Jacobs, Diane VonFurstenburg - DO YOU REALLY WANT to buy their goods when they can't keep their mouths shut...how about a BOYCOTT??!!

This MARNI-wearing independent is relieved that Consuelo, MARNI's designer is Swiss and hopefully keep her politics to herself. (Isn't Wintour British anyway - why is she meddling in American politics??)

And as for Anna Wintour's crass statement about Republicans not being good dressers - how wrong you are - SO GUYS don't forget to BOYCOTT VOGUE MAGAZINE as well!!

She thinks the vest is out of style, take a look at her hair. A la Lana Turner in the 50's or she has been driving around with the top down on the car.

Johansson is a great actress but rather uninformed politically.

Obama has escalated the phony "war on terror" and supported the very measures most Democrats were up in arms about under Bush: preventive detention, torture, Rendition, etc. He has endorsed all and even signed the NDAA, asserting the right to detain American citizens indefinitely, with NO CHARGE. Sorry folks, that is unconstitutional This man bailed out the banksters who destroyed the economy, appointing the very same people to cushy cabinet positions

He promised to get universal medical care (via a Single Payer system or public option) but after getting over twenty million in bribes ( http://www.commondreams.org/headline/2010/01/12-9 ) from health care swindlers and having two dozen secret meetings with insurance and pharmaceutical corporate heads ( http://articles.latimes.com/2009/jul/22/nation/na-healthcare-talks22 ) Obama and the Dims abandoned the public option, Medicare for everyone.

Oh of course cause all those tea parties who got elected were going to Washington and going to make radical changes... And not only did nothing stopped anyone else from doing anything. Don't forget to turn off the lights before you leave tea party.

Obama’s “Runway to Win” campaign pieces for sale through his website are all special.

The Marc Jacobs T-shirt may at first seem unadorned, but if you know the back-story about his defiance to his corporate masters. The T-shirt reveals a steely statement about his past, current, and future support of Barack Obama and his presidential campaign. Further, notice the powerful John Hancock sized signature in the bottom right and the innovative use of a simple campaign button design to convey a strong message of: “Vote for Obama.” Simply a great piece!

The Vera Wang tote is the masterpiece of the collection. The movement of the flag is captured on a natural background of canvas making love of the President, his family, and supporters along with love of our county synonymous. The coupe de-grace of this tote is the double strap handle and blue inner lining that takes this design to the next level as only Vera Wang does. Vera Wang brings a special feeling to those who carry this tote just like she does for those who wear her gowns on their Wedding Day.

Libs will drool over Jason Wu's adorable little commiebird but unfortunately as these designers see their Obotdesigns sell, they will likely see the rest of their design line left untouched in the future by the educated consumer. Bye DVF, Tory and Marc... we part company here.

I think Hollywood may be doing Obama more damage than good..Afterall, they are not exactly middle class people and many look at them like corporate lobbyist raising big money for favors..We know both sides do it,but with people out of work, they probably angry as hell.
