Sue Myrick Retirement: North Carolina Rep. Announces She Won't Run For Re-Election

Sue Myrick Retirement

CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- U.S. Rep. Sue Myrick of Charlotte says she won't run again for re-election to North Carolina's 9th Congressional District.

The Republican made the announcement Tuesday through social media and her campaign site with a brief video. She said her decision followed thoughtful discussion with her family and she plans to serve out her ninth two-year term through the end of the year.

The 70-year-old Myrick is a former Charlotte mayor and past U.S. Senate candidate who joined Congress in a Republican sweep during the 1994 elections. She has been in a relatively safe Republican district that includes Charlotte, North Carolina's largest city.

Her announcement comes less than a week before candidate filing is to begin.

Myrick is an embarrasment to North Carolina. With more publicity, she could well be another Bachmann. Charlotte could do better, but the yuppy/"chris-chin" coalition will be hard to move.

It is so illuminating to learn the real story about other state's duly elected officials. I love HuffPost. When the nominees for her seat come up you guys will be able to identify the crazies, or just plain stupids. Not only here, but in all state elections. One way or another social media is going to give us a national election that we will be proud of -- in spite of the goons who think they run the show. I really think this is possible.

Good...this country needs younger people in Congress. Most of them are well past retirement age and cannot adjust to the new realities in this country.

"Safe" or not, it's time to turn this district blue ...

It won't. The liberal voting bloc of the I 85 corridor belongs to Mel Watt. The portion of Charlotte and surrounding counties (Union?) are incredibly conservative.

I can't stand Sue Myrick. She's almost as bad as Virginia Foxx. But there's going to be no flipping this district.

Sue has served the 9th for some time now, and I don't blame her to enjoy life now. The GOP has no worries about losing this seat.

Charlotte is a city of Mega banks and Mega churches. No wonder someone who is so obviously and completely nuts was able to hang around so long.

One down and so many more to go. Every time a TPer or a GOPer quits it's good news for the party that wants to help the 99%. Hopefully moreTP/GOPers will see the writing on the wall and they will quit too.

You do realize that a younger and more energetic version of this hack is simply waiting in the wings, don't you?

i've met Sue a couple of times, and i must say that she's really a nice person. while i don't agree with most of her views, she still tried to do some great things for my city.

Ms Understood, thank you for your example. Just because you do no agree with most of her views does not mean that one cannot give credit where credit is due. I hope more of us will follow your example.

if we learned anything about the last election, the pendulum has a way of swinging the other way when the people aren't happy with congress. even if it swings to the destructive, hateful, dense and more oftentimes than not, power-hungry republicans. i have hopes it will right itself with a swing back to the jedi side of the isle.
