Gay Divorce In LA: Robin Tyler & Diane Olson, First Gay Married Couple In LA, Announce Divorce (VIDEO)

First Posted: 02/ 8/2012 6:31 pm Updated: 02/ 9/2012 12:03 pm

Roughly one in every two marriages ends in divorce. So where there are gay marriages, there will be gay divorces.

Unfortunately, today is a sad one for the first gay married couple in Los Angeles. Robin Tyler filed for divorce from Diane Olson on January 25, NBC reports.

Tyler and Olson knew each other for 40 years, 18 of which the two spent together as a couple. They had gone to the Beverly Hills Courthouse for seven years in a row and been denied a marriage license each time. Finally, they married in June 2008, before Prop 8 passed in November 2008 banning gay marriage.

Commenting on the end of her marriage, Tyler said to NBC, "We don't have to say, 'And if you give it to us, we're gonna be perfect people... We'll love more than anybody.'" Rather, she said, "We're just like everybody else."

see? gay marriages can be just like straight marriages.
Legalize marriage for same-sex couples NOW.

Um... You do know that that's not a very good argument for legalizing gay marriages, right?

Robin Tyler and Diane Olson are both crusader whom have done a great deal for LGBT rights. Their public fight for the right for same-sex couple to marry will always be considered as an important chapter in LGBT history. All of us the LGBT community owe them both a huge debt of gratitude. Living ones life in a fishbowl is not easy and adds extra stress to any relationship. I am saddened that they have felt the need to dissolve their marriage but that is a private matter for both Robin and Diane and personally I don't think it is anybody's business as to the reason for the divorce. I wish them both happiness and success. Their contributions towards marriage equality remain whether or not they remain a couple.

As a straight black male I ENVY gay men. Yea I said it I envy you gay men. I wish CA did not legally recognize hetro-marriages that way men would be able to lose up to 70% of his assets plus alimony in a divocre. Gay marriage? hey gay guys they are pushing you into marriage claiming it as a right so that your assets can be subject to the courts. Remember your alimony/child support payments go through the state coffers where they use it then distribute. Funds from alimony/child support go to places like the Bar Association. Gee aren't the lawyers & judges awarding alimony/child support members of the Bar? Think about it.

So what happened? A younger woman? It would be interesting to find out.

Bad news for the couple. Great news for attorneys.
Some gays are opposed to gay marriage, The rich ones are concerned about losing
their assets. Others just want to be free to come and go as they please. They don't want to be pressured in to marriage. Who do you think supports gay marriage more?. Gays or attorneys?

It almost seems as if their agenda to get married kept them together, but once they no longer had to fight for the right, they lost the glue that held them together. Too bad they couldn't work things out.

i sure the divorce lawyers see a whole market.

maybe gays should have a talk with the het freiinds before getting married. I know a bunch of guys whom have had the fortunes trimmed by divorce. I know you can get prenups, but the only go so far. All i can say, is being willing to kiss half or more of what you own goodbye.

Marriage is detrimental to love?
06:30 AM on 02/10/2012
Why should this be news? Of course gays and lesbians break up, we are just the same as everyone else, just without the same rights

Because they were the first couple to be married when California granted marriage equality. Their names were also on the lawsuit.

The "rights" you are talking about include mostly the right to have your assets taken away in a divorce. That was the reason for all this push for gay marriage. You guys are so naive I swear.

If money is all you care about then that is sad. Being able to freely live with the person you love is more important. My partner of 10 years and I cannot live in the USA together because she is not a US citizen. Hetero men can order a mail-order bride and bring her to the States with a green card, but I have no rights at all to bring my partner to the US, so I am forced to live abroad away from my elderly parents. Nice choice I have, NOT. Straights have no idea how this issue affects us. It is connected to immigration, taxes, adoption, inheritance, medical decisions, insurance, spousal benefits etc etc. If you don't wanna get married and risk losing your money in a divorce AT LEAST YOU HAVE A CHOICE not to do so. Of course same sex couples will get divorced, so what. That's each couple's decision, but we need that choice in the first place.

Or - would still be together if not for the stress of a lengthy trial to acquire the civil rights they are entitled as human beings.

what exactly were they fighting for? They were legally married and while the ban happened after that, they still were bound under the legal law that validated their marriage. So what civil rights were they trying to acquire that they did not have access too?

I think some folk are tryin' to imply that with all it took for these two Sistas to be joined together; they would be together 'til death parted them. I t just goes to show they ain't no different than the rest of us heteros. Some stay married 'til death separates them. Wow, where does the love go that made you want to live a life time with a person? Same people. What changes that the love that was so sacred is no more? I only ask 'cause I didn't love my husband when we married. If the love was there once...does it vanish? I think we stop wantin' to make it work. Sex is wonderful--but it doesn't last forever. Love is eternal. In my opinion. Life.

this saddens me, but no more than straight divorce.

Saying 50% of marriages end in divorce has to be clarrified. That is not 50% of people getting divorced. Most people who get divorced then get married and divorced the second time. 2nd marriages have a higher divorce rate than 1st marriages. Some people get married and divorced a couple more times. So a small number of people get divorced many times. The majority of people never get divorced.

Gays didn't know how good they had it. A relative of mine is a very paid medical professional . Her partner and her broke up after 15 years. She did give her partner some moeny for new furniture etc. but if they had been married she wuold have lost hundreds of thousands. I sure you will also see the gay version of gold diggers, yun studs marry older rich guys then split bye bye money. Talk to most straight guys with money and that is one of the major concerns.

One you have someone that will sign one and alot of people will not, two they are usually good for only certian amount of time. Many don't cover assets aquired during the marraige. Yes they will help. but far from bullet proof

prenups are icky. if you've got to put stipulations and 'what if/just in case', why get married? there's no room for doubts.

No, we know how much discrimination we are enduring.

If you think that not having your relationship recognized is a good thing - do without.

Don't come crying later.

i didn't married until i was thirty isix, and then i was not crazy about the idea. From what i seen marraiges and divorces have truned peoples lives into train wrecks.
