GMO Salmon: US Consumer Groups Petition FDA For Tougher Probe Of Engineered Salmon

First Posted: 02/07/2012 9:44 pm EST Updated: 04/09/2012 6:12 am EDT

* Strict FDA review needed for public health-consumer groups

* Would be first gene-altered animal for U.S. consumption

* No timeline for Food and Drug Administration decision

WASHINGTON, Feb 7 (Reuters) - Three U.S. consumer groups petitioned the Food and Drug Administration on Tuesday to subject a new genetically engineered salmon to a more rigorous review process than is now in place before the fish can be approved as safe to eat.

The fish at issue, AquaBounty Technologies' AquAdvantage salmon, is currently classified as a new animal drug for the purposes of FDA review.

The FDA considers any genetically altered animal a new animal drug for approval purposes. The petition calls for the salmon to be classified as a food additive instead, which would require a more rigorous FDA review.

AquaBounty is seeking U.S. approval to market its engineered Atlantic salmon, which contains a gene from another fish species, the Chinook salmon, to help it grow twice as fast as normal.

The consumer groups' petition says the way these salmon are created substantially alters their composition and nutritional value, and so they should be treated as a food additive. Under this standard, they said, the company's data would have to overwhelmingly prove AquAdvantage salmon are safe to eat.

The consumer groups - Food & Water Watch, Consumers Union, and the Center for Food Safety - said in a statement the "new animal drug" designation is insufficient to protect public health. The review process for food additives offers greater protection, they said.

AquaBounty had no comment on the petition.

The FDA did not comment specifically on the petition, but confirmed that the company's application for FDA approval for AquAdvantage salmon is under review, and that genetically engineered animals are evaluated under the new animal drug provisions of U.S. law.

AquaBounty has said in the past that it sees these genetically modified salmon as a potential solution to environmental concerns associated with salmon aquaculture, and discounted fears they might accidentally escape into the wild and affect other fish.

However, Food & Water Watch Executive Director Wenonah Hauter said the company's own study showed that genetically engineered salmon may contain increased levels of a hormone linked to breast, colon, prostate and lung cancer.

The petitioners said a proper review would require genetically engineered salmon to go through comprehensive toxicological studies to ensure the fish are safe to consume and properly labeled.

If approved, AquAdvantage would be the first genetically altered animal for human consumption in the United States.

Genetically modified vegetables such as corn have long been on the U.S. market, and the FDA allows modified animals as pets or to help produce biologic medicines.

There is no timeline for an FDA decision. As a matter of policy, the FDA does not comment on citizen petitions. (Reporting By Deborah Zabarenko, Environment Correspondent; Editing by Todd Eastham)

1) The government allows poison food on the market,
2) Most of us eat it.
3) We die younger due to a disease caused by eating this poison food
4) Social security problem solved.
Any questions?

excellent point, you know it actually sounds like a plan, so we should all beware

Cooking destabilizes all proteins......The blending of different Salmon strains is no different than blending cattle breeds.....Test yes, but government is too bent on destroying business innovation. Its not like they are mixing genes from totally unrelated species

Genetically modified salmon? Bad idea.

are you kidding me? If it tastes good eat it. I don't care if they merge Rainbow Trout with Thresher Shark.

Harbinger??? the 1973 Charlton Heston, Edward G Robinson film Soylent Green. If you have not seen this, it is about a predicted future where people live on "Soylent Green"; the source of which is hidden from the populace. Heston comes to find at film's end that Soylent Green is "people".

It has one altered gene so it grows faster. Hardly a frankenfood. I would rather eat this than the tasteless grey hamburger that was grown in a lab using muscle cells.

Sadly more and more of our food is being altered even just a little bit.Unless you get from local farmers you don't really know what is going on with your food. With the aluminum spraying even that will be difficult, because farmers are going to need seed stock that can tolerate the high levels of aluminum in the soil.

Enjoy the natural food for as long as you can.

'Frankenstein' salmon has been around for a long time, and I refuse to eat this disgusting thing. Visit mercola.com for more information on GMO-raised foods. Astonishing.

If GM salmon is approved, I will never eat salmon again.

First of all, unless you're eating Wild Alaskan salmon, you probably aren't doing yourself much good anyway. With corporations in every industry poisoning the earth along with individuals doing the same, we are fouling waterways, soil and air. No wonder they're excited about finding a new planet that they say mimics earth. The clock is ticking here.

one of the fears is that this GMO fish might accidentally escape into the wild and affect other salmon

A very real and valid fear.

that wouldn't make sense.
The fish are mutated so they grow faster, their growth wouldn't affect another animal that consumes it

When they tamper with genes it can turn on recessive genes that can trigger unwanted outcomes. That is what happened with the grains.

i got some salmon filets in the freezer that arnt even a year old yet.. do you have to thaw them first before grilling or frying? i forget.. oh well they will probably keep another year.
04:49 AM on 02/12/2012
You'd better eat them soon. Freezing for another year will result in an inedible product. You're already pushing it by keeping it this long. Defrost it in the fridge, grill and eat it as soon as possible. Bon appetite!

Once the government get involved with something be sure that it will be complicated and very expensive. Not saying that we don't need a group to watch over what most companies are shoving down our throats but hey money is the word of the day for all politicians and keeping their job they will do anything and allow outside interest to have their way. Don't you just love our law makers, always looking out for themsleves and their parties.
