Keith Olbermann Special Comment Blasts Susan G. Komen Foundation And CEO Nancy Brinker (VIDEO)

Keith Olbermann

First Posted: 02/ 8/2012 9:12 am Updated: 02/ 8/2012 8:50 pm

In a fiery new Special Comment, Keith Olbermann blasted the Susan G. Komen Foundation and its founder and CEO Nancy Brinker on his Current TV show Tuesday night.

According to Olbermann, the Susan G. Komen Foundation remains corrupt under Brinker's leadership despite the resignation of the foundation's controversial vice president of public affairs, Karen Handel.

Handel, who strongly opposes abortion, reportedly drove the foundation's decision to cut funding for breast cancer screenings to Planned Parenthood.

Olbermann harshly criticized the Komen foundation for its handling of the recent controversy. He said that Handel decided that the foundation should collaborate in the "witch hunt that the nation's right-wing has directed against Planned Parenthood."

He referred to Komen's reversal of its "new policy" a "spineless convenience by which Komen has still not really committed to continuing its funding of Planned Parenthood, and perhaps more importantly, by which it has not committed to staying out of this dangerous, ideological game, which will kill some freedoms, and which could kill some women."

Olbermann also addressed what he called the "fundraising favor" Komen did for Planned Parenthood. Olbermann said that now the "consciousness has been raised" among people who had since been unaware of how Planned Parenhood was used as a political tool.

"One of the vote-getting machines in this country was zeroing in on Planned Parenthood as the scapegoat for all the evils which that vote-getting machine exaggerates, to whip up paranoia and political power among the easily led of this nation," Olbermann said.

The real issue, Olbermann said, was Komen's "attempt to hide its new partnership" with people Olbermann called the "guttersnipes, purveyors of hate, and fear, and revenge fantasies."

He also said that "all of the dark periods in American history have begun with acts like Komen's and excuses like Komen's." As for Brinker, Olbermann said that she "continues to lie" about the organization's motives and has "dishonored both her sister's memory and this essential cause." Brinker founded the Komen foundation in honor of her sister Susan who died of breast cancer.

Romney's position on abortion and other women's health issues switched from pro-choice to anti-choice during his term as governor from 2003 to 2007, and his record on choice-related issues is mixed. He vetoed a measure that would have allowed pharmacists to dispense emergency contraception without a prescription to rape victims, but he signed into law a measure to expand family planning services for low-income women and families in Massachusetts.

Romney was also one of the few GOP candidates who refused to sign the Susan B. Anthony List's pro-life pledge, because his camp said it could have some "potentially unforeseen consequences." But he believes abortion should only be legal in cases of rape, incest or to save the life of the mother, and he said if he were president he would support the reversal of Roe v. Wade.

"This is not the time for the Republican Party to put up a candidate who is weak on the pro-life issue or has a history of flip-flopping over it," Bachmann said of Romney at a National Right to Life convention in June.

The issue here should not be KO.
It should be $u$an G Komen.
They will have to purge their Exec. Staff to shed the political shroud that they chose to wear, and to get another donation from me.

HP is the only media that gives KO any exposure. What does that tell you?

KO with his usual spot on commentary. Don't know where you've recently and probably none o my beeswax, in the same way I wondered where you were when your dad was in the hospital. You returned with some beautiful insights with your dad and made me remember mine. Also thru this misfortune you turned and shared Furber with us.

How I wish Keith Olbermann would return to MSNBC. Outside of Rachel, the rest of the anchors are bozos and hacks. Let's face it, Ed, Al Sharpton, Lawrence and Chris are jokes. They're the Sarah Palins of our side!

Oh please, atleast Lawrence investigates what he is talking about before opening his mouth, so he is not included in the group with Ed or Rev. Al, who knows and understands more than people give him credit for. Personal hatred of some of these people are just that, your own personal problems, being projected on to someone else. I think Rachael is as smart as they come, but Rachael goes off the rail sometimes, with her own person problems, she is suppose to be a journalist talking about todays items in the news, but she spends a lot of it, taking up her own cause for the LGBT community.

I listen to Chris Matthews every evening on MSNBC's channel on Sirius. I've really grown to like his analysis, and he has plenty of guests from the Right. He's a Left-leaning centrist, a pragmatist, and I like getting that point of view.

To paraphrase Flip Wilson, the question is not who is Keith Olbermann, but WHERE is Keith Olbermann? Why was he on his own show only ONE day last week after missing the entire previous week? Is that not the real story, not his comment on Komen made during one of his rare sightings? With all the gossip being reported about every talking face on TV, why is there no coverage of Keith's no-shows? Anyone?

I am really offended by Olbermann's seeming lack of work ethic at Current. And at MSNBC last year, when he was supposed to be sitting in the hospital with his dying father, a camera caught him at a World Series game. Now he's got bronchitis, I hear. Right.

And his coverage of one of the Repub primaries was a total bore, while MSNBC rocked it.

I think I would rather see Jennifer Granholm at 8/7, and let Keith go to his own public access TV show.

And I, too, would like to know from the frigging "journalism" profession what the hell is going on with this timeslot, because I want to see Al Gore's network succeed.

Keith - great commentary as usual I just wish you had illuminated the same tactical connection that was insidiously used to bring down and demonize ACORN and the voter suppression laws now sweeping the country based on blatant misinformation propaganda . The real danger we are facing are the 'puppeteers' behind the veil manning the controls not the congressional stooges serving as their frontmen.

Komen has been exposed and nothing Brinker says will change that, if Komen hopes to be 'saved' Brinker and the entire board needs to go. the seeds were already planted at Komen before Handel was hired, she just supplied the 'fertilizer'.

dayla,
keith has down everything he could to "illuminate the same tactical connection that was insidiously used to bring down and demonize ACORN."   Please check this link for the many times he has exposed those behind this demonization.   Sadly, he is not empowered to arrest them.

I was happy to at least get "quotes" of your comments on the internet and I FINALLY added Current to my Verizon schedule!!!!!!! It means I can also record and save eposides of your show. We are in desperate need of a stong voice against these "purveyours" of hate....saw too much of this in the 30's and 40's in Europe. cjsim

With all the vitriol dispensed by the GOP against everything Obama and everyone not wealthy enough to be a republican donor, it is a wonder he didn't have more to say. The way the GOP is targeting the poor, disabled, women and the elderly there is plenty to talk about.

I didn't agree with what the foundation did, but to react like this guy did? This guy is a lunatic. "purveyors of hate, and fear, and revenge fantasies."? What does he think he does every time he opens his mouth? He is hatred on steroids personified. Totally agree w/ Hwrd... he is irrelevant except in his own mind.

It's always good to know who is the face of the status quo, the business as usual, the never mind we can't do anything about it anyway, the go about your business, the nothing to see here, the dumbing down of America. And you're just another faceless purveyor of that point of view.

Yawn....... hate to tell you this, my lord, but i don't care what you think. i am not going to lose any sleep over you. i just happened to say that there is vindictiveness on both sides. if you cant see that, i'm sorry. but in the meantime, go yell and scream somewhere else, not at me.

Yeah, it is not enough to simply "not vote" for the people who espouse hate, and attempt to strip away rights and protections from people. One must actively vote for others in the same sense. Every republican up for the potential nomination shock, frightens, or offends me on multiple levels, even Ron Paul. Even if I did not like Obama, I would still be voting for him.
