CNN Suspends Roland Martin For 'Offensive' Super Bowl Tweets

Roland Martin

The Huffington Post   First Posted: 02/ 8/2012 2:03 pm Updated: 02/ 9/2012 9:23 am

CNN announced Wednesday that it is suspending Roland Martin in the wake of the pundit's controversial Super Bowl tweets.

The Washington Post's Erik Wemple posted this statement from the network:

“Roland Martin’s tweets were regrettable and offensive. Language that demeans is inconsistent with the values and culture of our organization, and is not tolerated. We have been giving careful consideration to this matter, and Roland will not be appearing on our air for the time being.”

The move came three days after Martin caused an outcry by tweeting that people should "smack the ish" out of any male fans of an underwear ad starring David Beckham. He also made fun of a New England Patriots player who arrived wearing a pink jumpsuit. "He needs a visit from #teamwhipdatass," Martin wrote.

Gay rights groups such as GLAAD accused him of condoning anti-gay violence, and pointed to columns he had written, such as one in which he compared homosexuality to alcoholism. Martin first said that he was merely making fun of soccer players, and then issued an apology of sorts, saying that he regretted "any offense" he had caused.

CNN did not initially make any statement about the controversy, and Martin was on the air for the network's election coverage on Tuesday night.

After news of the suspension broke, GLAAD issued a statement of its own.

"CNN today took a strong stand against anti-LGBT violence and language that demeans any community,” GLAAD spokesman Rich Ferraro said. “Yesterday, Martin also spoke out against anti-LGBT violence. We look forward to hearing from CNN and Roland Martin to discuss how we can work together as allies and achieve our common goal of reducing such violence as well as the language that contributes to it.”

National Black Justice Coalition, the nation’s largest black LGBT civil rights organization, also responded to news of Martin's suspension. "While we are encouraged by CNN’s stance against language that incites anti-gay violence, we hope they also will make a commitment to shine more visibility on the hardships LGBT people of color face when trying to participate fully in their communities," said Sharon Lettman-Hicks, Executive Director of the National Black Justice Coalition. Lettman-Hicks also blogs on The Huffington Post.

Honestly, I don't think the comments were homophobic at all. He was just saying that any man who would go out and buy underwear because they saw a 'soccer star' wear them wasn't a real man at all. If you want to start a firestorm because he's making fun of the sport, go ahead, I guess. But I don't think it was directed at gays....

I like Roland a lot but he stepped over the line. I hate it when good liberal media folks do something so stupid as Roland did. There are so few that can carry the message and point of view as well as Roland does and then he screws up, think Roland, think!! We have lost wonderful people because they do very foolish things, need I say Elliot Spitzer!

This guy is a serious homophobe and should never be on the air again.

Many who tweet think they are suddenly transformed into 'stand up comedians' and the world will laugh at their lame one-liners. Not so, not so.

Roland is not a minority of one just like those of an alternative lifestyle and just like they not want to be accepted for who and what they say they are, they should be willing to accept others for what they comment openly. CNN should be ashamed for kowtowing to others and denying the right of the one

I agree with most of what Roland has to say on most issues, however, talking about soccer at a major football event was not the wisest choice for him. It was a joke and I just didn't get it. The commercial itself, would not make me want to buy the product. Half of those commercials were silly and had more hype than content. Oh wait, that was the purpose. Anyway, don't throw the baby out with the bath water, Roland should apologize for his insensitivity and allow him to move on as you have allowed others! Or Roland just have your own show like Rush, I will support that! And for those of the huffpost family that has a problem with opinion remember, it's just that, opinion!

Please listen to us and no more yelling. Sensitivity to different groups of people is what is going on here and it should not be squelched so persons can have a laugh. Only by enforcing these societal rules will all of us learn what is permitted and what is verboten. Call it what you will, we need rules and rule enforcement, in this new world where jokes are jokes, not nasty commentary on another person's clothing or makeup or housing, followed by a chuckle. NO longer will that be permitted.

SLIM I KNOW YOU ARE NOT GETTING AT ME WITH STRUCTURE AND PUNCUATION CHECK??? DUDE SERIOUSLY.

SO MY FONT IS DIFFERENT AND YOU DONT IDENTIFY WITH MY VERNACULAR SO YOU DIMINISH MY COMMENT TO A RANT? WOW! MAYBE YOU SHOULD BE SUSPENDED FOR SUPPRESSING MY COMMENT BECAUSE I DONT COMMENT LIKE YOU. HYPOCRITICAL MUCH?

SEE THATS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN GAYS AND STRAIGHT.AS A STRAIGHT BLACK MAN I DONT CARE IF FOLK TAKE ME SERIOUSLY THEY CAN CONSTRUE MY COMMENT AND TAKE IT ANY WAY THEY WANT TO AND FORM THEIR OWN OPINION ABOUT ME AND EXPRESS IT ANY WAY THEY SEE FIT.

I APPRECIATE THE ADVICE BUT I DOUBT I WILL EVER USE IT!

When a public figure tweets, it's not "on his own time." It doesn't matter whose account he uses.
When a public figure tweets "smash the ish" and "whupdatass" he's saying the targets deserve violence.
"Gay Gestapo" isn't much better.
I can't stand it when people think they can dump on whoever they want, but can't take it when the dumpee says "ouch."

ROLAND MARTIN IS NOT A PUBLIC FIGURE!
HE IS A COMMENTATOR ON CNN JUST LIKE YOU ARE ONE ON HUFF POST. DONT GET IT TWISTED.

GET OUT YOUR CIRCLE AND JOIN THE RANKS THEN MAYBE YOU WILL REALLY UNDERSTAND WHAT "SMASH THE ISH" AND "WHUPDATASS" MEANS IN MEN LINGO AS OPPOSED TO WHAT IS STANDS FOR IN GENERAL.

YES GAY GESTAPO! PARSING FOLKS WORDS BY INVADING THEIR MIND SPACE IN ORDER TO MAKE THEM FIT AND BRING ATTENTION TO YOUR LIL' CAUSE TO HELP FURTHER AND SPUR ON YOUR MOVEMENT.

Roland has his opinion, however, when you make fun of a certain segment of the society, he should have known it was going to come back at him! But CNN should stay consistent, get rid of Piers Morgan as well and not just Roland!
11:19 AM on 02/11/2012
Its inferiorating to see Piers Morgan on cnn after his involvement in Murdochs corrupt tactics of fabricating news.. They went thru peoples garbage, voicemails, illegally obtained medical records. But a few slightly disrespectful tweets (in comparison) and you boot someone who had better character

This is so sad as Roland Martin was one of my favorite commentators. I had no idea that he was so backward. I hope he embraces the 21st century and comes back in support of LGBT issues.
12:54 PM on 02/11/2012
people need supporting, not because they are gay or not. One of the ways to support someone is by ignoring when they are in the wrong. It only makes them comfortable with their wrong. Homosexuality is a sin. The person that sins needs to be loved, but they need to be told about the danger that exists with their choice. We can not continue in sin and expect to receive eternal life.

I thought the tweets were funny !
06:13 AM on 02/11/2012
Seriously, my best friend is gay. That said, that commercial was super gay.. Get off your high horse and dont be upset when someone makes an honest opinion.. I support both sides and their opinions. Why arent lgbt organizations mad at republicans they dont even want you to exist

So you are supporting that all gay people should have the "ish" smacked out of them? That a man that wears pink should have been beaten by #teamwhipthatass ? Your gay friend might want to rethink his friendships.
01:43 PM on 02/11/2012
He didnt imply gay people should be slapped.. No one has a problem with the miller lite commercials " One more and you lose your man card".. Thats all im sayin..

Really? Go reeducate yourself.
02:58 AM on 02/11/2012
Are these LGBT organizations gonna cry blood everytime someone makes a joke or comment that they feel is offensive towards them? Perhaps they jump on every opportunity to draw attention to their organizations. Had Roland Martin worked at Burger King and made such tweets do you think GLAAD would step in and say anything?
01:23 AM on 02/12/2012
Of course not, but Martin is a public figure and represents CNN, which is supposedly an objective station.

And yes, I do hope the LGBT organizations scream bloody murder over offenses. It's still open field day on this group, and everytime we condone a slur or ridicule or a violent-sounding expression, we give the nut cases permission to do harm.

As a gay man, I, for one, can laugh with most others at 'gay humor'; but how does one joke about threatening or condoning violence toward others? Those tweets, & his history of homophobic comments are no joking matters...Buh bye, Roland. Don't let the doorknob hit ya...

I hate the underwear in question... Does that make me an anti gay person?
