LONDON — Paintings, jewelry and fashions belonging to the late Elizabeth Taylor have sold for more than $183 million, with all of the more than 1,800 items on offer snapped up, Christie's auction house said Thursday.

Christie's said 1,817 lots were sold at a series of auctions in New York and London, some at 50 times their pre-sale estimates.

The most expensive was Vincent van Gogh's landscape "Vue de l'asile et de la Chapelle de Remy," which once hung in the living room of Taylor's Bel Air home. It sold for 10.1 million pounds ($16 million), including the buyer's premium.

The daughter of a London art dealer, Taylor amassed a substantial collection of 19th and 20th century art, including works by Edgar Degas and Auguste Renoir.

Hollywood legend Taylor – whose films included "Cleopatra," "Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf?" and "Cat on a Hot Tin Roof" – died in March aged 79, and Christie's has been selling her belongings on behalf of the Elizabeth Taylor Trust.

New York sales of jewelry, fashion and memorabilia in December raised more than $156 million, with a buyer paying $8.8 million for a 33.19-carat diamond ring given to Taylor by actor Richard Burton, whom she married twice.

A sale of 38 paintings in London on Tuesday and Wednesday raised an additional 15.6 million pounds ($24.6 million).

"The global outpouring of affection and admiration for Elizabeth Taylor from fans and collectors alike has been amazing for us to witness," said Marc Porter, chairman of Christie's Americas.

Richard Burton said she was "beautiful beyond the dreams of pornography". There will certainly be another like her.

Wow, she was really, really rich. It sounds as though her total estate may approach a billion dollars. Nice that much of it will go to charity.

Beautiful and classy lady. True movie star. I say she can rank legitimately as sexiest woman of all time list. (Not the beach chick, J Aniston.)

Classy? Do you know the first thing about this person? Try to start with making a mockery of marriage and go from there.

Thank goodness for the warriors of morality to keep us all in line.

She was class personified. Look into her charitable works and educate yourself. How many hundreds of miillions of dollars have you given away? You sound like a very unhappy bitter person.

Yet when we die, we cannot take any of it with us. The things we own end up owning us. We hold on to possessions in a feeble attempt at permanence. Van Gogh is fertilizing daffodils I believe, just like Ms. Taylor.

She gave generously to charities throughout her life and was the first famous person to champion people with AIDs. She set up two charities and a large percentage of her fortune was left to AIDs research. I don't think she was too interested in taking it with her.

oh yeah? She "showed up" to her own funeral late to make a statement even after death. How vain do you have to be? Someone who was drowning in jewelry and luxury is not someone who doesnt care about material things. Yes she was charitable but that doesnt mean she didnt love her luxuries.

I worked in the AIDS community when she first started her foundation. She paid for everything, including her employees salaries out of her own pocket. Everything. No fan fare, not PR realses, she just did what she neded to do.
All you people who criticize her have alot to learn, and you need to worry about what you do for others out of the kindness of your hearts.

She even left 1 million dollars to Larry Fortensky. (Her last X husband.) She was very generous and loyal to her friends and family. Love her.

Mostly her AIDs charities and her kids I think.

Elizabeth Taylor was a star all of her life. A true natural beauty - not the product of marketing and surgery. She was the last true Hollywood Star. She never exploited her children, kept them out of the limelight, and was a loyal friend and generous supporter of charity. Her jewels and her taste were over-the-top, and she wore them with great style.

Long live Elizabeth and may those lucky enough to have some of her treasures enjoy them as much as she did.

A true legend and a precedent that Hollywood CAN be about natural beauty AND humanitarianism, ethics, and longevity. RIP Elizabeth! And Boundless Thanks to You in leaving the World a Better Place!!

All those items, all that money and from what I read her children are getting none of it and all of it is being given to fighting her organization that fights AIDS, amazing.
RIP Liz, you are missed.

You are quite wrong. Elizabeth provided for her children and her grandchildren - well but not excessively. She left money to her personal assistants. She also supported several charities. She was a benevolent lady who managed to die graciously without her heirs fighting over her estate - a tribute to how well she lived and how well she took care of her friends and family.

She didn't leave her jewelry to her children because she said they didn't want it and wouldn't wear it. You can't keep jewelry like hers in your dresser drawer - you have to have body guards and bank deposit storage to wear it safely. She loved to live grandly and took it all in stride. But her offspring have never sought the spotlight and didn't want her major jewelry pieces.

Thank you for the information. I have much respect for her children and grandchildren for not using their grandmothers name to make things easy for themselves and living basically normal lives.

She not only supported several charities, she started the Elizabeth Taylor AIDS foundation, which has benefited from her huge fortune. ALL donations to her foundation went directly to the services they provided. All expenses for the foundation came directly out of her pocket. Every penny. Other charities, no names, should take a lesson on how a real charity works.

I wish it would go towards cancer research; a disease that unlike HIV, cannot be prevented by any means we know.

This is why she was so important. She gave without judgement. You could learn something from her.

No empire reigns forever. I watched a documetary of her and could imagine what it was like to be affiliated to her in her days. There is a lot of lessons from tales like hers.

Yes the good old days of the 30s' 40s 50s etc. There are always good new days ahead but most often we refuse to see them untils they are past.

I don't think many people thought the 30's or most of the 40's were too great. They made great movies, but the country was going through the depression and world war II.With the 50's you get McCarthyism.

For a gal with a large fortune, she was pretty down to earth. She lend her face and voice to draw attention to needy causes.
01:22 PM on 02/09/2012
I hope the 183 million goes to help those who can not eat or do not have any basic needs in lives.

A portion is actually going to her charities.
