'My 600-Lb Life': Donald Slips Into A Coma (VIDEO)

First Posted: 02/ 9/2012 8:27 am Updated: 02/ 9/2012 9:07 am

On the series premiere of "My 600-Lb Life" (Wed., 10 p.m. EST on TLC) viewers were introduced to Melissa Morris. She credited her amazing transformation to a lot of hard work and determination.

On the second episode it was Donald Shelton's turn to share his story.

At the age of 34, Donald weighed 675 lbs, and he knew that he had to lose the weight or he would die. So in 2004 he underwent gastric bypass surgery, a procedure that was itself extremely dangerous for someone of his size.

At the beginning of his seven-year battle, Donald showed just how difficult daily life was for him. He could barely stand because his weight was just too much for his legs to hold, and he acknowledged that he would be lost without the support of his parents.

Following the surgery Donald managed to lose an incredible 300 lbs, but then he had a massive setback. Having problems walking after a fall, he checked himself into the hospital.

There, after starting to ramble incoherently, he slipped into a coma.

Waiting at his bedside, Donald's distraught dad said, "I'm scared. Put me in that bed. Get him out. He's got a full life to live yet." Because Donald wasn't strong enough to breathe on his own the doctors had to put him on a respirator, and his brother Brian said the family had no idea what was going on except that he had pneumonia and some kind of viral infection.

Then the family got shocking news: Donald's friend told them Donald had been using crystal meth and cocaine, and that his girlfriend was a heavy user. Had Donald jeopardized his chances of leading a normal life by taking drugs?

Eventually, the cause of Donald's collapse was discovered. He was diagnosed with Guillain-Barre syndrome, a disorder that affects the central nervous system and can lead to serious complications including paralysis and death.

After he came out of his coma Donald recuperated at home and with intense physical therapy, and after more weight loss he regained mobility. However, his weight has fluctuated wildly over the last seven years. At one stage he was down to around 200 lbs -- a staggering loss of over 400 lbs -- but then, sabotaged by his mother feeding him junk food and his own depression, he gained back over 100 lbs in one year alone.

At the end of the show, Donald was getting his inspiration back. He was attending hydro-therapy sessions and was down to 390 lbs, but he still has a long way to go.

Follow more weight-loss journeys on "My 600-lb Life," Wednesdays at 9 p.m. EST on TLC.

I don't understand how a mother can sabotage her own son's diet and make him gain so much weight because he's "too skinny." HE IS SUPPOSED TO BE! That was the point!

I wanted to slap that woman so hard her dentures would come out.

I don't understand how watching people suffer is a form of entertainment....From hoggers, or whatever that show is called about packrats, to obese people getting ridiculed in public like that one with, the lesbian, Julianne or something (i don't watch tv), to even watching shows like American Idol and the such NOT to see the winners but to see the 'wrecks'. AND TO THINK, the people who get all into these .....shows, are the same people who critisize people who watch nascar just for the wrecks........even cartoons deal with mainly trauma and torment....no longer are the days of scrooge and the nephews having a adventure just to aquire a lost treasure, or ..money for an ice cream cone!

Believe what you want, but I don't even have cable, if I 'watch' TV it's usually DVD, or netflix type related....only time I see commercials is whenever I stupidly watch a vid segment on something like this huff post. But believe me or not, I do not watch broadcast television...at all.....and how do you assume i know so much about tv purely by that post? If you look at pretty much any website you can 'gather' the same exact knowledge just from using that thing called a brain and observation

What I can't figure out about this program is why these people and their families arn't getting counseling as well as weight loss plans? The parents or wife/girlfriend are almost always the culprets in overfeeding these people, who can't get out to get the food themselves. And in Donald's case, his mother, who is also morbidly obese, clearly sabotages his efforts, at one point saying "we need to get some more weight on you", and bragging that he could now eat 3 tacos. That he regained over 200 lbs just made me sick. None of these people who lose horrific amounts of weight will ever keep it off without intensive counseling to determine WHY they got that way in the first place. They are doing them a disservice to document their journey without offering them the tools they need to be successful. Probably makes for better "TV" if they fail in the end!

I undertand that this is serious and has to do with a person's life. However, five minutes watching so-called "reality TV," and I would slip into a coma too.
