A Miami man authorities say is suspected of having stolen an SUV in West Palm Beach was shot and killed by a police officer Wednesday night in Liberty City.
Authorities say Julio Santiago, 33, was shot around 8 p.m. by a Miami Beach Police officer assigned to Miami-Dade's Robbery Intervention Detail. RID officers were in the area of 75th Street and Northwest Sixth Avenue when the officer heard gunfire nearby and spotted the car fleeing the scene.
The officer pursued the vehicle, but Santiago ran. He was found hiding in some bushes, reports NBCMiami, and a fatal shooting ensued.
"After a short pursuit, the subject bailed out the vehicle and fled on foot," said Miami-Dade Det. Javier Baez. "He was subsequently located by the officer and a confrontation ensued. During the confrontation, the officer discharged his firearm, killing the subject on the scene."
Baez said the vehicle was shortly identified as one stolen in Palm Beach. Miami-Dade Police will investigate the shooting, which drew Director James Loftus to the scene.
Neighbor Yvette Stevenson, who ordered everyone in her house to get down when the shootings started, bemoaned the commonality of gun violence in the area to Local 10.
"It's all around here. It's all around me," she said. "Once a month. Once a month."
