Barack Obama's 2012 Playlist Leaves Out Hip Hop, Has One Latino Artist

Fortunately, "Livin' La Vida Loca" did not make Barack Obama's 2012 campaign playlist although the Ricky Martin number might have been apropos given the tumultuous times of his first term.

But another Martin song, "The Best Thing About Me Is You," did make the president's all-inclusive, demographically-friendly soundtrack for crowd events this political season.

In fact, the Puerto Rican pop star's abundantly-happy number is the sole Latino-influenced song on the list, now available on Spotify.

What? No Shakira? Where's Juanes? Ruben Blades? How about some Tejano for voters in the southwest? Calle 13? El Gran Combo?

"Lost your job? Your casa, as we slog through recovery?" Viviana Hurtado wrote in The Wise Latina Club. "From Puerto Rico (which won’t become the 51st state if Newt gets elected. The luna has that distinction) is El Gran Combo's Fiesta de Pilito, with eating lechon and pasteles, plus drinking some Bacardi as a temporary remedy to being on skid row."

New Yorker pop music critic Sasha Frere-Jones told Politico: "They haven't got a single Latino jam on there, other than Ricky Martin."

In another notable omission, there isn't a single rap song on the presidential song list, The Atlantic noted:

That's despite vocal support and occasional musical shoutouts from Jay-Z, Nas, and others; despite his own professed love for Lil Wayne; despite his invitation of Common to the White House; and despite K'Naan publicly offering the president use of his "Wavin' Flag" even as he asked Mitt Romney to stop using it. But rap is dangerous territory for a politician, liable to scare off older white voters and with lyrics often marred by casual sexism and talk of violence. After Common's appearance caused a kerfuffle, the Obama team is trying to tread carefully.

And what is the competition playing?

Mitt Romney's campaign likes Kid Rock's "Born Free" and country artist Toby Keith's "American Ride," which features the line: "Winter gettin' colder. Summer gettin' warmer. Tidal wave comin' 'cross the Mexican border," according to The Washington Post.

A tidal wave that sounds like the opposite of his infamous self-deportation proposal.

The Washinton Post added, "Former House speaker Newt Gingrich (Ga.) blares "Independence Day," a tune about domestic violence and death-by-arson. Texas Rep. Ron Paul once took the stage to the menacing dum-dum-dum-dum-da-dum of Darth Vader's theme song. And former senator Rick Santorum (Pa.) sometimes uses no music at all: When his rallies end, an awkward silence descends."

Say no more.

What songs would you add?

Dear Mr. President: Nothing less than the DREAM Act, from an Independent voter West of the Mississippi.

Hip Hop sucks.

After recently channeling his inner Al Green, I wonder what Barack has in store for Michelle on Valentine’s Day. Perhaps he’ll re-enact that Bette Davis double cigarette scene? Give Michelle a tour of his Super PAC? Invite the Bidens and Gingriches over to the White House for a swinging “Dolley Madison Night”? Unfortunately, not everyone in political circles will have this array of romantic options, as portrayed in this funny YouTube video about "Obama's Secret Service." Enjoy: http://tinyurl.com/6sevqsj

When HP becomes so trivial as scrutinizing a playlist, it's a bad news day. I would be more concerned about how diverse his administration is ( which it is) than about how diverse his music tastes are.

Blame HuffPost for publishing it. Blame the author for being trivial and childish for calling foul that the president doesn't have Latin music in his iPod. There are bigger things to worry about than his playlist.

Well said. HP keeps sinking to new lows.

Is Huffpost purposely trying to scrub off some black and latino votes with this nonsensical article. If Pres. Obama had NWA's "F the police" on his playlist, republicans would have a freaking fit! This article is BS! Many old skool blacks like my parents, like the old Soul music of Earth Wind and Fire, Temptations, Marvin Gaye, Smokey Robinson, the Commodores, Stevie Wonder, the Isley brothers and Pres. Obama has already expressed his love of old skool R&B music. This is reflected in his list but as President, he has supporters of various racial backgrounds and he needs to appeal to everyone not just his own.

Republicans know that blacks and latinos still support Pres. Obama and they are going to do all they can to try and take us away from Pres. Obama and go over to the darkside. It's not gonna happen so HP can give it up!

My fellow hispanics: So what if he doesn't have enough Latin music in his iPod. Maybe it's not his cup of tea in music. We need to stop being silly about something so minimal.
12:32 PM on 02/11/2012
Agreed. This is HP at its worst.

Wow he can sing, play glof, dance and travel around the world. Maybe if he gets re-elected (hope not) he can learn how to run our government.

Well, I highly doubt that. But he will be able to sing, play more golf, dance and travel around the world some more. And, don't forget those Christmases in Hawaii too. LOL.

"They haven't got a single Latino on there, other than Ricky Martin".
Wouldn't that make Martin the "single Latino jam" that not supposed to be on the list? But I digress. Obama's 50 - I wouldn't expect to see any rap on the list...

Hey, look - this is what they have to work with when it comes to Obama; they have to come up with this wacky stuff. I kinda feel bad for 'em...: )
03:07 PM on 02/10/2012
He's got a pretty good choice in music but he's missing out if there's no Latin music on that playlist. Porque como dice el gran combo "sin salsa no hay paraiso"
02:24 PM on 02/10/2012
I expected to see:

I'm Just A Girl -- No Doubt
Uptown Girl -- Billy Joel
Material Girl -- Madonna
Dancing Queen -- ABBA
Independent Women -- Destiny's Child
I Am Woman -- Helen Reddy
And of course . . .
Stand By Your Man -- Tammy Wynette
