Obama Announces Birth Control Compromise

Birth Control Compromise

First Posted: 02/10/2012 12:01 pm Updated: 02/10/2012 1:00 pm

President Obama is expected to announce a compromise to the new federal requirement for birth control coverage at 12:15 EST Friday.

As HuffPost's Laura Basset reported:

Faced with increasing pressure from religious groups and Catholic lawmakers in both parties over the new federal requirement for birth control coverage, the Obama administration is planning to announce an "accommodation" on Friday aimed at allaying some of the concerns of faith-driven employers. ABC News reported Friday morning that the announcement was "likely" to be made Friday. A source familiar with the deliberations told The Huffington Post the announcement was imminent.

Senior White House adviser Valerie Jarrett told members of the Congressional Pro-Choice Caucus in a phone call on Friday morning that the new compromise is the insurer -- rather than the employer -- would be required to provide the contraceptive coverage free of charge for women employed by the entities in question, a congressional staffer told HuffPost.

One idea that has been mentioned is the "Hawaii model," by which an employer who morally objects to contraception could opt out and inform its female employees where they can get that coverage outside of the employee health plan. In Hawaii, women who decide to directly pay the insurer out of pocket for contraception coverage are not allowed to be charged more than they would pay for their company plan.

ABC News reports that President Barack Obama's compromise would not go as far as the Hawaii plan, but would involve a third-party health company helping to provide contraception coverage. It actually makes financial sense for insurance companies to cover birth control, ABC's Jake Tapper notes, because unwanted pregnancies and resulting complications cost more than contraception and sterilization.

What ever happened to separation of church and state? Is that only used when it is convenient for the left? Ive been saying it since he has been in office. He is not a president. Obama is a dictator. Im sure Stalin and Obama would have been great friends.

There is no reason other than over reaching to involve religious instituions in the birth control debate----first off for decades now Planned Parenthood has been getting federal funds to provide birth control and abortion service for all women and the poor. As for it being FREE------there is no such thing. Someplace the cost is passed onto consumers and tax payers.

Actually they do get a lot of donations. I have an automatic deduction taken from my credit union account. No one in my family is likely to ever need or want an abortion. However if anyone NEEDED one, they wouldn't need PP anyway. In Canada they are free in hospitals. No questions asked... unless it is a young person, in which event the main question would be, "is there any other help or councelling you might need?"

I guess my only question is.....why can't this guy and his buddies just stay out of our business? Good grief, government is nothing more than a thorn in the side of the average citizen.

because he was ewlected to help all Americans, Americans that want his help...like 98% of sexually active catholic women that use birth control!

Now, my question is why does the republican party want to decide what a woman does with her body? Why cant they stay out of women's business?

I don't frankly care about their business. I'm just tired of paying for it.

Religious groups, not just Catholics, have seen the encroachment of government into their churches' beliefs and values. The Catholics have never been for abortion or contraceptives now this president wants them to pay for these services. Mr. President, that is quite a chunk of votes you just threw aside, remember every Catholic church read the letter you wrote telling them of this to their parishoners.

Yeah, I remember a former priest at our church ranting for several weeks and telling us to vote against any Member of the Legislator who supported gay marriage. My wife and I stopped going until he was replaced by a more rational priest. After that we returned and my wife became their principal fund raiser and event organizer I tagged along as a furniture mover and cleaner upper... and on occasion someone who did not mind being a fool for the entertainment of others. Incidentally the overwhelming majority of Catholic women use and support birth control. Most Catholics will have loads of time to think about it before the election, and most will still vote for the only candidate who demonstrates real concern for things that matter to them. And that's still the black guy.

Barry says it's "free". Nobody will have to pay for it? Will it magically appear? Nothing is "free".

Watch Morning Joe the other day with the Arch Bishop. I knew He danced around the truth.
He said it was about the Catholic Church having to pay for the insurance. Obama too Him at his word.
He dropped the idea that the Chruch had to pay for. It. What a surprise the moment Obama compromised. they changed their position.
It makes it hard for people to trust even their own faith.

The faith is fine... the problem is the old boys running the church. An awful lot of Catholics have no affection for Benedict, "Bene-Dictum"... which translates to "nice talk".. If only he made SOME attempt to to follow Christ.

Here's somthing to think about, Making a faith based oganization pay for something adainst their belirfs is like making Muslim / islamic based churches build homes for battered women under sharia law . Its against religious liberty.

I think it more like this: Forcing a faith-based organization to sterilize someone against church doctrine would be like forcing a muslim to eat pork.

Good thought... though I suspect some Islamic communities in the USA and Canada already do that.

I had no idea that our President could simply declare something to be free, and then declare who is going to pay for it. He can do this? This is the sort of thing that Hugo Chavez has been doing for a few years. And now our President is doing the same thing? Isn't this what Joseph Stalin and Fidel Castro did?I understand that the CEO's of Banks and Insurance Companies are glad handing dweebs who have no coconuts, but what happens if one of them stands up and says NO! Is this what Pelosi was talking about when she was goose stepping around with that big gavel? God help us. We need to vote this man out, or this will not end well.

Everytime the Democrats get together be it for gay marriage or for birth control it's just a giant lovefest celebrating the virtues of secular humanism. Who needs God anymore? We have them looking out for us.

Nah, we will always need God, and one of His gifts to us is the secular humanists. Don't worry so much about religion, God has it all covered.
