Fart Joke Leads To Bomb Scare: Student Harold Wayne Hadley Arrested In Mississippi

Fartjoke
Harold Wayne Hadley, Jr. is accused of plotting to bomb his school -- over what he calls a fart joke.

Nothing clears a room like a fart -- except, perhaps, a bomb scare.

Harold Wayne Hadley, Jr., 19, was arrested at a Mississippi junior college after he allegedly wrote a note on a piece of toilet paper on Tuesday, containing the word 'bomb,' according to Weirdnews.net.

The note prompted 11 emergency agencies to respond to the school, but there was no bomb.

Hadley and his family contend that he was only explaining the joy of flatulating in the library.

"He was in the restroom doodling on some toilet paper ... we are from the country, and he calls passing gas, bombs," said Hadley's aunt, who wouldn't give her name to WDAM. "[He] put 'I passed a bomb in the library,' talking about passing gas, and somebody came in and found it, gave it to a teacher that recognized his hand writing and it blew all out of proportion."

Investigators wouldn't say exactly what Hadley wrote, but WDAM reports that it was no more explicit than "I passed a bomb in the library."

Hadley was arrested and held on $20,000 bail. If convicted of threatening to blow up the school, he faces 10 years in prison and a $10,000 fine, according to WAPT. His aunt says he earned straight A's at Jones County Junior College and was scheduled to graduate in May.

O.K., we as a nation have officially lost it—or maybe not, since the comments seem to understand how absurd, or worse, this is. The librarian was out of line, but the cops who showed up and should have laughed it off are worse. I hope this gentleman got a really good “city slicker” lawyer to get him a settlement that will make the police department use some actual judgement next time, not just open the playbook and read the step-by-step directions for real crime.

I'm sure there's something in the Patriot Act that the Department of Homeland Security can use to throw this "criminal" in prison forever... maybe even have him sent to Guantanamo as a "terrorist" if he had eaten beans the night before... ya know, an aggravated case of flatulance bombing...

YAY for all the hard work our justice system is doing to keep us safe from METHANE LEAKS!

They can't be serious about this...can they? If he goes to prison for that That would be the only criminal act in this story.

One would have thought that the police on the scene would have taken a quick look around and high-tailed it out of there to fight real crimes. One would be unduly optimistic, it appears.

He did something incredibly stupid, but if what he is saying is true, it wasn't illegal.
I guessing that the charges will be dropped.
04:00 PM on 05/27/2012
"incredibly" stupid? Really? How is this in any way incredibly stupid? How is it even *slightly* stupid? Are you saying that merely using a word, and using it in a context that *nobody could reasonably be confused about* is stupid? Tell me, what is the stupid thing he did, I dare you. Tell me exactly what he said which was stupid, and make sure you use that very same word in your response so we can misinterpret it on purpose and arrest you, and call you incredibly stupid too, that'll be fun.
02:45 PM on 07/09/2012
it would have been incredibly stupid if this had happened on a plane...
04:02 PM on 08/05/2012
I take issue with “incredibly”; I do believe that the word “bomb” has become a flashpoint to which people overreact dangerously. I hardly even think it was careless—obviously the gentleman knew not to talk in the library, passed a written note for a quick comment—where is the “incredible stupidity” in that? I would have expected better judgement from the staff—and also from the cops.
12:54 AM on 10/06/2012
The most dangerous overreactions are coming from the cops. Have you noticed how many unarmed people have been shot and killed by policemen recently. One was a double amputee in a wheelchair in a convalescent home. One was an older gentleman who had somehow activated his medical alert device while at home, and the cops responded and thought he was an intruder. There were several others. We need to train our police forces to not shoot us first and ask questions later.

Now more than ever we need a fart police. What if he did it in the religious section of that library?
Blastphemy.
At least the family used the word 'flatulating', which would indicate that other than farting in the library they occasionally used the books.

And we can make the perp more terrifying by mentioning all three of his names, like they do with the most horrid criminals. John Wayne Gacy, Lee Harvey Oswald, James Earl Ray, etc.

Charles Manson and Jeffrey Dahmer always get a pass for some strange reason.

Charles Milles Manson
Jeffrey Lionel Dahmer
It doesn't have the same ring.
I think it's the whole 3 first names thing.
04:05 PM on 08/05/2012
No, it is what we are used to—we have heard “Charles Manson” associated with murder, not “Charles Milles Manson”, so the first is more easily recognizable. “John Gacy” would need to be processed for a split second or so before recognition would dawn; “John Wayne Gacy” gets a reaction even before the last syllable. conditioning, no more, no less. (and I do not know Gacy as a first name)

Agreed, we are all making puns, commenting as though this were a big joke, but it is a sad, sad statement on where most people’s minds are. We had better start reclaiming sanity, individality, and our civil liberties, or we have truly lost what was once best about this country.

If the wording is correct, and it was a real explosive, why would he "pass" it to anyone? It was obviously referring to something else. The librarians must have nothing much to do these days.
