Lisa Chan, Actress In Pete Hoekstra Ad, Reportedly Identified

Posted: 02/10/12 06:20 PM ET

Lisa Chan Pete Hoekstra

The young woman who starred in a much-maligned Senate campaign ad targeting Sen. Debbie Stabenow (D-Mich.) and released by Rep. Pete Hoekstra (R-Mich.) has reportedly been identified as Lisa Chan, a 21-year-old California native.

The blog Angry Asian Man, which first reported the details, reports that Chan is a part-time actress and model -- a beauty pageant contestant and winner, in fact -- UC Berkeley graduate, founder of a non-profit for under-served youth, and now star of the most controversial ad so far of the 2012 election cycle.

The ad, which aired in Michigan on Super Bowl Sunday and was removed from circulation later in the week, shows a woman, reportedly played by Chan, bicycling through a landscape of rice paddies dressed in khakis and a yellow shirt -- apparently the reason for an unfortunate typo that labeled her as "yellowgirl" in an html code.

As she approaches the camera, the actress thanks "Michigan Senator Debbie Spend-it-Now" for supposedly spending too much money, in turn helping the Chinese economy.

"Your economy get very weak. Ours get very good," she says in broken and stereotypically accented English.

Chan hasn't commented on her reported role in the ad, but she has apparently been affected by the backlash. From the Angry Asian Man blog:

From what I understand, she's now proactively trying to address and undo her role in the racist messaging of Hoekstra's campaign, and has partnered with a community organization to release a statement with her version of the story.

The original ad is below:

Umm, @KarateKid.....doesn't Mr. Miagi sterotype little asian men???
09:04 PM on 02/22/2012
How so? Stoic? Patient? Nostalgic? Generous? Kind? Talented? Serious? Considerate? Responsible? Selfless? Respectful? Honorable? Caring?

The Miagi character exhibited all of these characteristics and more in the Karate Kid movies, I take it that you never bothered to watch?

Just wondering why they chose a little Asian man to teach all of those skills when any decent person would/should have the same qualities.

The truth hurts for a lot of people. The US is being taken for a fool by China and accusations of racism used to beat down anyone who goes against them. See who's laughing when they have sucked away the last job and cut off the credit lifeline.

Should also leave the girl alone, focus instead on the torturers of the Chinese secret police if you want someone to demonise

Donate all the money you made off the ad if you even want us to consider forgiveness. We've spent all our lives trying to overcome the stereotypes of all Asians, and you just undid a lot of it. I only wish I could say what I want to say to your face.

Who cares?? Better than all the drinking and violence ads out there.... And while it may have been stereotyping it was the truth!! America can't feed it's own people why should we feed other countries

Between a 21-year old aspiring actress and a career politician, the one who should have known better is the politician. I can forgive Lisa Chan for taking an ill-considered job. She's learned a lesson that I think she will benefit from. I doubt Hoekstra has.

21 is old enough to know that the script was racist.

He didn't hold a gun to her head. She chose to take the role. Period. She is responsible for taking the heat when she took the role.

Hoekstra is gladly responsible for the creation of the ad. And hopefully Stabenow blows him out of the water. Hoekstra is a piece of slime. And he bought airtime during the Super Bowl that proved it.

I believe that this commercial is an indictment of how weak and flaccid the US economy has become. We are unable to fund our own spending habits and we have done nothing to prevent good-paying manufacturing jobs from leaving the country.

What a monumental disgrace. I hope her parents are proud, very proud of how their little daughter has turned out. She should friend Alexandra Wallace, and maybe these two can start a reality show.

They probably are proud. She graduated Berkeley at 21, and she founded a non-profit at 17. Can you point to anything like that in your life?
06:38 PM on 02/12/2012
If I was her parent and my son or daughter abandoned their principles as this young woman has, I would be disappointed. Aside from a few bucks that will be gone soon, how does this kind of work further the goals of her non-profit?

"Can you point to anything like that in your life?"

Sure, I've never appeared in a racist political ad. Quite an accomplishment apparently. I'm sure Ms. Chan would agree.

Here is why we have an economic mess:
"How the GOP Became the Party of the Rich" (from Rolling Stone magazine - it explains how bad the economic war against us really is!):

Hoekstra is not a naturalized born American. He was born in the Netherlands. I thought there were laws about not only the President being a naturalized born citizen but also all members of Congress and the Senate. If not, a bill needs to be drafted and voted on immediately. This man is not American. The actress, I want to see her birth certificate and if she doesn't have one she needs to be deported on the next red eye out of here.

There is no law requiring a senator to be native born. I have not heard any arguments in favor of changing the law.

You can't legally compel people to produce their birth certificates or other proof of citizenship unless their is probable cause that they are not legally present in the country.

Yes, throw everyone out with whom you disagree. Brilliant. And, so very, very American.

That’s a pretty broad brush your painting with.

Um, having lived in South Africa I'm gonna stop you here. Sounds like you've never been. Painting people in the same box because you don't have the smarts or want to put forward the effort to be fair is not acceptable. There are quite a few Afrikaaners (note spelling) that assisted in the anti-apartheid movement.

You're own tag line is "Do we really have to hate" Take your own advice.

And yes, I am Black so don't go there.

While she should be ashamed of her participation, it would be sad if the anger that should be directed at Hoekstra is directed at her.

No, it wouldn't. While I can understand the need to "get a gig", protraying a racial stereotype is a matter of principle and integrity...or lack of it. Shame on Hoekstra's campaign and shame on this young actress for her poor decision.

Yes, I did say she should be ashamed. I'm just saying that being an easy and accessible target she will probably bear the brunt of people's anger rather than Hoekstra.

Actors play racial stereotypes all the time. Think of every middle eastern looking actor who plays a terrorist. Or any actor who players a junkie, or drug cartel leader. Don't hate the player. Hate the game.
