Madonna Slams M.I.A.'s Super Bowl Middle Finger: 'A Teenager ... Irrelevant Thing To Do'

Madonna Mia

When something happens at the Super Bowl halftime show, it never seems to go away (paging Janet Jackson).

Madonna has taken to the airwaves to express her disappointment with M.I.A.'s decision to flip the bird at cameras during the halftime show, calling the move a "teenager ... irrelevant thing to do." Madge was chatting with Ryan Seacrest about her performance when he brought up the incident.

To the pop star, the middle finger was simply "out of place" at a show characterized by "such a feeling of love and good energy and positivity."

The halftime show also featured Cee Lo Green, LMFAO and Nicki Minaj in a ensemble performance of some of the pop queen's biggest hits and a new single, "Give Me All Your Luvin.'"

Madonna recently made headlines by announcing a world tour in support of her upcoming album, MDNA.

TMZ also reports Madge also called into Carson Daly's show and said M.I.A. has apologized to her.

The halftime show was viewed by well over 100 million people. Reactions to the incident varied from bemused to enraged, and NBC and the NFL both condemned M.I.A. (and blamed each other for the fact that censors didn't block her middle finger).

For the soundbite, head over to TMZ.

Maybe MIA got her move from Madonna, who simulated oral sex on stage. Such a teenager move right?

Just so we're on the same page, I'd really like to know what instance of simulated oral sex you're referring to... please specify a specific tour/year. Thanks.

Even if that were true, people pay to go see a Madonna concert and know what to expect. This was a nationally televised show and I will bet the farm that they were all informed of the rules regarding what is unacceptable behavior. That said, they don't have to be told what is unacceptable ... she knew she was crossing the line.
08:39 PM on 02/14/2012
. . . and meant to cross it.

yeah...and i'm sure when madonna was 35 she was at home making quilts and having tea parties :/

btw, i'm not saying mia wasnt being immature or acting like an idiot, i'm just saying madonna it the last person to call someone out on stuff like that. those in glass houses.......
06:19 PM on 02/13/2012
it was the best of times, it was the worst of times. as if Madonna didn't know MIA would do something, she's a rebel, it's her calling card. Maddona was banking on it I think.

MIA has no talent listen to her music
12:23 PM on 02/13/2012
The action was immature but who do you think opened that door of feminine self expression in the first place? My guess is that she was hoping the day after the superbowl all the press would be singing her praises and she didn't get the attention she was after. Let's not forget this is a narcissist used to having her ass kissed.
12:06 PM on 02/13/2012
i suppose that makes MIA's move particularly appropriate for Madonna's "teenager...irrelevant" song. after all, they were dressed up as cheerleaders for god's sake...

Nicki Minaj :

“Meeting Madonna changed my life.
Working with Madonna changed my life.
Rehearsing with Madonna for two weeks changed my life.
When you look at these amazing women, you have to realize that a lot of work goes into this. I, for the first time, refused to go to any parties. This performance was it and this is the first performance that I’m proud of in my entire career.
I saw how much Madonna sacrificed and how much she rehearses and rehearses and rehearses and rehearses, and everyone there was like, ‘We got it.’ But she was like, ‘No, I want you to know this choreography in your sleep.’ We did know it in our sleep by the time we got on the Super Bowl stage. But when I saw that, it inspired me so much, the same way Wayne inspired me to start really becoming a beast as a rapper.
The Madonna situation inspired me to give it my all and put that work in.â€

no wonder why her performance felt so over-rehearsed. nevertheless, the song is awful for a woman of her...experience. was it originally intended for willow smith?

Lol.. isn't that way they made that delay between the live performance and what we see on TV... so they can censor stuff they don't think our sensitive eyes can just bear to see? I would fire the camera switcher....
08:36 PM on 02/14/2012
Yeah . . . I've wondered that too - I think they WANT everyone to see it - makes for weeks of publicity. Any experienced producer could have cut away during that time lapse (just as they could have with Janet Jackson).

Not giving kudos to MIA ( whoever THAT is) but, there's the pot calling the kettle black.Like Madonna was passive as she clawed her way to the top.She would still try outrageous if she thought anyone would go for it....

Mmm, not if she were a guest at someone else's performance. Madonna is a professional. Also Madonna made all her pertinent statements when it was HER spotlight. That's what all the dimwits here don't realize at all. All the "pot calling kettle black" (how original) cliches are surely from people whose lives are completely rife with all sorts of improprieties..

With all due respect to Whitney.. but seriously? You think that because she died and grabbed the top spot that it means something profound? It's the public suddenly being sentimental Madonna was, is and will be a winner in life. Thats the irony of the contrast between her and Marilyn Monroe. People think Madonna "ripped her off' but they couldn't be any more different. Madonna alone is in charge of her destiny - not a man, and not a substance.

The queen of pre-recorded singing, moving slower than those dancing around her, trying to look half her age (and failing)....? The you are correct!

And where do you think MIA learned raunch culture from? There is a pay off ( a huge one) if you have no class-that's Madonna's message so why would MIA who idolizes her not want to try too, with the same crudeness? All the girls and women in the Pop industry want to be madonna. That's all they've been told TO be. You need to veer into hypocrisy and snobbery and ideally be white like Madonna to make it seem less "trashy" and "street" but try anyway. Is what it is and a Vogue covers and some chesseball Givenchy cult robes don't white wash it unless you're an idiot.

wrong. Pop culture is fun. When i was a teen I refused to listen to Tiffany, madonna and new kids but still loved 70s and 60s pop culture and music something fierce! a there was no internet I could not look away from the papers, magazines etc. I'm not Amish. Kids today have the net for choice. a coansupia of great stuff. I would have killed to have You Tube growing up or even Abe books.

Without M.I.A. and others like Timberlake and ABBA samples Madonna can no longer chart. Whitney (who hated madonna) will have her out of the singles top ten in a matter of hours. M.I.A should never have apologised!
