Mitt Romney: Rick Scott's Drug Testing Law Is 'An Excellent Idea'

Rick Scott Mitt Romney

First Posted: 02/10/2012 11:44 am Updated: 02/10/2012 11:44 am

A bill for drug testing welfare recipients has recently been on the table in Georgia, and at a campaign stop in Atlanta Mitt Romney told the NBC affiliate 11Alive that it's an "excellent idea."

"States will deal with drug testing with welfare recipients, but my own view it's a great idea," he said. "People who are receiving welfare benefits, government benefits, we should make sure they are not using the money for drugs. I think it's an excellent idea."

Florida's controversial law requiring people receiving welfare to take drug tests has made Gov. Rick Scott a target for criticism and ridicule, most memorably when a "Daily Show" correspondent asked him to pee in a cup.

Scott did not endorse a GOP candidate ahead of the Florida primary, and a Public Policy Polling report showed that voters would have been less likely to vote for a candidate he endorsed. He did say that Latinos are drawn to Romney because of his family values.

"The Latino vote cares about family," he told CNN. "If you look at Gov. Romney’s family, he's been very successful; he's built a great family; very committed to his wife. He's somebody that's been successful in life. So, I think if they look at his background, it's what they want. They care about their families. They care about, you know, somebody that's been successful in business. That's what they care about. So, I think that's part of what his attraction is to the Latino vote."

Scott also made clear to the "American Morning News" that he is a fan of Romney's, saying that the GOP hopeful "lives the American dream."

Wall Street and big banks received the largest "welfare" payments in history. Are republicans asking for rich bankers and fund managers to take drug tests? Of course not. Only poor people are a target. Romney even empathizes with the big banks- he feels their pain. I'm not kidding- look it up.

The republican agenda is so obvious. Let's go back to trickle down economics, Jim Crow laws, abolishing reproductive rights for women, and the decimation of our middle class. Money is talking, and Republican voters are listening and obeying, no matter how deceitful and ridiculous their candidates are. Sad . . .

Please everyone, go watch the Daily Show's segment of this! Assaf did a great segment where he just totally pwns the idea bout welfare testing.

P.S. Isn't government mandated welfare testing just more big government.

I also remember the famous line from the movie "Wall Street"

"you don't judge a man by the size of his wallet".....Oh how true, Gov. Scott, and Mitt Romney. I'll just call them bros.

But that seems to be the first thing, a republican asks to see.

Read between the lines of our disliked Gov. concerning the Latino's supporting Mitt,

"It's what they want"

Who the hell is Scott to say what anybody wants? Typical GOP propaganda.

Hate to tell people, the American dream is just that a dream.

My favorite Romney statement is about letting the process work referencing foreclosures, "let the it work through, don't get involved, the INVESTORS can buy the homes and rent them out".

Sounds like Mr. Potter from "It's a wonderful Life"...

If you took a drug sniffing dog on a walk through wall street,
It's nose would just burst into flames.

This is just a scam to enrich drug testing companies.

Sign on many big box stores "all applicants must subject to drug testing" I think if its good enough for you to get hired its good enough for welfare applicants... just my opinion
03:40 PM on 02/12/2012
The difference is the box store pays for the drug test. In florida, the taxpayer does. If drug testing companies were offering their serviced for free, that would be one thing. But in florida every newly enrolled person on welfare cost the taxpayer $45. That $45 could be used to pay teachers or police, etc. Not to mention a violation of the 4&5th ammendments.

random drug testing for any reason is unconstitutional... when we submit ...and we do... we are culpable in giving away our rights.

"7200 were tested 1600 refused to be tested. Thats around 1800 That no longer get checks.(2% failed) That ends up between 15 to 20 % reduction."

Where are you getting your statistics? And where are you getting your math? 2% of 7200 tested equals 144. Please explain how this equates to a 15-20% reduction.
08:30 PM on 02/11/2012
200 [2%] Failed the test. 1600 [the remaining 13-18%] refused to bend over and lose their civil liberties and dignity. How much of a percent of the 178 million went into the Governor's wife's pocket [since she has a vested interest in the drug testing company]?

No wonder Romney thinks it's a 'good idea'.

Mitt, I think you just lost the Florida vote, if you hadn't already.

Agreeing with a generally disliked governor is not in your interest.

Furthermore, the fact that you don't even seem to know that these laws are being contested on their constitutionality is scary for someone who would, as president, get to nominate people to the highest court in the land and who would be in that position FOR LIFE!

Think about that, and think about some of the other things Romney has said lately: about 'Personhood amendments', and access to abortion, and contraception. Then think "Hmm, whom might he nominate to the Supreme Court if President?". Think long and hard about that before you pull the lever/punch the card/fill in the bubble next to the guy's name that has a big R behind it.

President Obama has had two Supreme Court fills and the court is hardly 'liberal'. But one more like Scalia or Alito and there's a very real possibility that laws requiring drug testing for benefits would be ruled Constitutional, which scares the heck out of me.

Where will it stop? Will all public school teachers have to take a drug test? Will all elected government officials have to take a drug test? While philosophically I like the idea of the latter, I know it's impractical, hopelessly bureaucratic, and a waste of taxpayer money.

Same thing too with all your choices for state and federal representatives and senators.

7200 were tested 1600 refused to be tested. Thats around 1800 That no longer get checks.(2% failed) That ends up between 15 to 20 % reduction. Note that kids don't lose benefits, just someone who tests clean is given responsibility for the checks. Talking some savings to the workers of Florida!!

One of the problems with this madness is that we don't have workers down here in Florida. We would have if the Governor would have come through with his pre-election promises/lies of bringing hundreds of thousands of jobs to the Sunshine State.

Another problem is that your numbers are completely whacked. Studies have shown that those on welfare use drugs much less than the average citizen.
03:05 PM on 02/12/2012
Whacked?? Those are the actual numbers from the state. Florida is a tourism state. No recovery in Florida until the rest of the country recovers. By the way I'll take actual numbers over a study any day.

What...? Ripping off Medicare and the Medicaid programs for personal profits?

Greedy birds of a feather, flock together. It's unfortunate that only one was caught and convicted.

Hey, Romney,,, You suck already and if you keep hanging out with a crook like Scott you can expect to see your supporters considering other options.

Scott admitted why he didn't endorse anyone, it's because he would have dragged them down to his slimy level.

FULLY AGREED, but it's kind of hard to drag someone down when they're already there...
