Pat Robertson: 'Twilight' Is Demonic (VIDEO)

First Posted: 02/10/2012 1:52 pm Updated: 02/11/2012 9:14 am

Pat Robertson does not have "Twilight" Fever.

On Thursday's episode of "The 700 Club," Robertson's syndicated religious TV show, the conservative Baptist minister and political activist slammed the vampire romance book and film series, calling the story about a teenage girl and her vampire lover both "demonic" and "evil."

Recalling a story about a friend who exorcised a spirit from a young girl, Robertson claimed that the demon had been invited in by the young girl after she had gone to see one of the films in the series.

"Yes, I think those vampire movies are evil," Robertson said. "There are no vampires, the whole thing is demonic, and it may give you some kind of thrill -- whee! -- of the spooky, supernatural, but it opens the door to the occult."

This isn't the first time complaints about the series have been lobbed against the film franchise, which is based on author Stephanie Meyer's series of books and stars Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart. In 2009, as the series' second installment, "New Moon," was hitting theaters, the Vatican issued a statement that called it "nothing more than a moral vacuum with a deviant message and as such should be of concern."

The irony is that Meyer is a devout Mormon whose lead protagonists, Edward and Bella, wait until marriage before they have sex.

Either way, the religious condemnation has not dampened enthusiasm for the film series; the most recent installment, "Breaking Dawn Part 1," earned more than $700 million worldwide when it came out last November. The final picture in the series is due out this summer.

What doesn't make sense about his portrayal of the series is that it was written by a Mormon women about the journey that a teenage girl takes, getting to know herself, being true to herself, and falling in love the traditional (and outdated, conservative) way, with marriage before sex, etc. Bella's transformative story sets a good example for young girls looking to emulate someone who is strong, who knows she is worthy of love, and both she and Edward exemplify how to love your partner more than you love yourself, which is exactly what young people should be learning to do. I'm no conservative, and I didn't have that experience, and it's just a silly book/movie series in the end, but it's nice for young people to have the influence in their life. And the point of Edward's struggle being a vampire is actually that he loves Bella enough to try to save her from having to become like him in every single book. How is that demonic? The books teach us that there is love in everyone, should you choose to live that kind of life.

You don't have to be a Christian or believe in a fifth dimension to be wholly convinced that the Twilight series is utterly destructive. http://www.wired.com/underwire/2009/11/twilight-lessons-girls-learn/ (and this is a relatively NICE criticism, compared with some other scribbling out there).

This poor old man should spend his time worrying about his lack of grasp on reality and leave the vampires alone.

Here is the problem with the Series. My sister in-law has taken her 4 yr old to them. Even the most recent one. At that age they can get confused about things. I mean, why is someone so old hitting on a high school student. Forget about the "vampire" stuff. It is the sex and violence and being something that young people want to watch. Anyway, as an adult, the series is ..ok..as a set of movies. Harry Potter on the other hand is about friendship and watching out for your friends. That Series has much better values.

I am a Christian, and as I Christian I think this man is over the top with his comment..I've seen all of the Twilight movies except for Breaking Dawn. I have many Christian friends who read and are currently reading the books. Certainly we're not perfect, but we're also not "demonic" either.

Yes, yes, there are no real vampires ... but there are no demons either, Pat. And, of course, no god to shoo them away. There are, however, many confused human beings, some of whom believe they can give advice or counsel to others. The occult, just as theistic mysticism, is simply a crutch many use to make whatever sense they can out of the world and their lives in it. Sadly, the crutch is too often used to bash others into submission or death.

The poor man is loosing it! I just wish those around him would help him but they are all to concerned with themselves to do anything to help him. The whole Pat Robertson organization has a moral problem. For the life of me, I can't see any of them preaching goodness. First they would have to have it themselves, but it would be very hard to find even one of them with that quality!!

The story goes that vampires live forever, well it seems Pat is living forever. Just wondering?
