'Seeking A Friend For The End Of The World' Trailer: Steve Carell, Keira Knightley, Patton Oswalt (VIDEO)

First Posted: 02/10/2012 8:13 am Updated: 02/10/2012 8:13 am

Just one day after the first poster for "Seeking a Friend For the End of the World" debuted with a thud, the first trailer for the apocalypse dramedy with Steve Carell and Keira Knightley has arrived with better results. After all, it's not often ever that you get to see Carell weirded out by Patton Oswalt and Knightley make out with "Community" star Gillian Jacobs.

Of course, those are the quirky-funny parts; throw some Tristan und Isolde in over the images instead of Talking Heads, and you've basically got "Melancholia." As a giant asteroid hurtles toward Earth, giving humanity three weeks to get its estate in order, a man (Carell) and his young neighbor (Knightley) head out on a road trip to find their loved ones. What they encounter ranges from riots to promiscuity to by-the-book police officers. It all looks...interesting. Can "Seeking a Friend For the End of the World" balance its warring tones over two hours, as well as it does in the two-minute trailer? As Woody Allen once wrote, "If it bends, it's funny; if it breaks, it's not funny."

Starring Carell, Knightley, Oswalt, Jacobs, Connie Britton, Melanie Lynskey, T.J. Miller and many more, "Seeking a Friend For the End of the World" hits theaters in June.

They make a very odd coupling, but it looks like a really good (if somewhat depressing) movie.

Has Steve lost weight? Something about him looks different.

The trailer looks cute. Not sure if I'll pay $8 to see it but I'll def check it out when it comes on Netflix;)

i'm getting such a sense of déjávú. not so long ago i saw a canadian film called '' last night '' that i very much enjoyed.
a bunch of people try to make the best of their last days on earth, one of them tries to have sex with every type of woman, ect.
is this a remake ? if so i gotta tell you from that trailer it looks like the usual inferior uasian version. watch the original, it's really good.

It's been done before long before last night.

It's not a remake. It's a theme in fiction that dates back centuries.

it's not just the theme, there are many similarities. point by point.

Yes, I just saw "Last Night" on Netflix last week. It was ok, it could have been better. Maybe this film will fill in some blanks the Canadian movie didn't.

I saw that. Yes, it was good. This sounds good too. Carell does heartfelt comedy well without being sappy.

This actually looks pretty good. And Keira Knightly in a comedy...hmmmmm...it might work. That guy playing the cop at the end of the preview. Wasn't he playing the cop who bought the weed in My Idiot Brother?

She was in Love, Actually which was a comedy and that was great.

10:02 AM on 02/11/2012
No it is not the remake. This has been done before in movies for decades, tv shows, radio dramas etc. It's centuries old.

I wondered myself if that's where the title came from. I mentioned this in the comments on another site and my comment was given like 15 thumbs down. Either nobody likes Cornell or maybe both the people who made this movie and Chris took the phrase "SAFFTEOTW" from someone else.

the only thing i can hope for is that it is funnier than steve's other movies...well 40 yr.old virgin was pretty funny but the rest?
eh, not very good.

Film historians look back at the monster movies of the fifties as metaphors for commie-menace hysteria of the time. "Invasion of the body Snatchers" has been unambiguously associated with the Joe McCarthy House UnAmerican Activities Committee. I wonder what future film historians will say about this generation's crop of 'apocalyps'e films. The word repeatedly ends on film because... why? Because its a metaphor for our own imminant national extinction? Its not just asteroids doing the job. In other films/TV its rebelling robots or demons from the underworld or the earth's climate going crazy on us.

they'll say that we projected our denial about what we're doing onto outside sources of destruction. if there's a culture left to write about stuff.

They say it will be because of Sarah Palin. After almost nominating her as VP, we all deserve to die.
