Underwear Bomber Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab Trial: New Details Emerge

Underwear Bomber

By ED WHITE   02/10/12 06:48 PM ET  AP

DETROIT -- A Nigerian who pleaded guilty to trying to blow up a Detroit-bound plane began his path to terrorism with a text message from a top al-Qaida figure in Yemen, the U.S. government said Friday in a court filing that discloses new details about their relationship.

Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab faces life in prison at his sentencing next Thursday. Although the punishment is mandatory, prosecutors filed a memo urging the judge to also order the maximum penalty for seven other crimes, which range from 20 years to life in prison.

It has been known that Abdulmutallab traveled in 2009 to Yemen to volunteer for terrorism and find Anwar al-Awlaki, an American-born cleric and one of the best-known al-Qaida figures who was killed in a U.S. drone strike last year. But the government's court filing offers more details, based on Abdulmutallab's interviews with the FBI in 2010.

Abdulmutallab is an "unrepentant would-be mass murderer who views his crimes as divinely inspired and blessed, and who views himself as under a continuing obligation to carry out such crimes," the U.S. attorney's office said.

In October, on the second day of trial, Abdulmutallab pleaded guilty to trying to bring down a Christmas 2009 Amsterdam-to-Detroit flight with a bomb in his underwear. The bomb, however, didn't go off. He called it a "blessed weapon" in retaliation for the poor treatment of Muslims worldwide.

"Once in Yemen, defendant visited mosques and asked people he met if they knew how he could meet al-Awlaki," the government said.

Finally, after providing his cellphone number to someone, Abdulmutallab got a text message from al-Awlaki, who agreed to talk to him, prosecutors said.

"It was agreed that defendant would send al-Awlaki a written message explaining why he wanted to become involved in jihad. ... After receiving defendant's message, al-Awlaki sent defendant a response, telling him that al-Awlaki would find a way for defendant to become involved in jihad," the government said.

After a three-day stay at al-Awlaki's house, Abdulmutallab was accepted for a "martyrdom mission," the government said.

"Al-Awlaki instructed defendant that the only requirements were that the attack be on a U.S. airliner, and that the attack take place over U.S. soil. Beyond that, al-Awlaki gave defendant discretion to choose the flight and date," the government said.

Abdulmutallab is acting as his own lawyer. A message seeking comment was left Friday with an attorney who is assisting him.

Al-Awlaki and the bomb maker were killed by U.S. drone strikes in Yemen last year, just days before Abdulmutallab's trial.

In a separate filing Friday, prosecutors asked a judge to allow them next week to show FBI videos of explosions containing PETN, a powerful powder chemical that was in Abdulmutallab's underwear bomb.

"The videos clearly demonstrate the power that the device was intended to have," the government said.

That's a racist comment Mr. Ware. The only place this guy belongs is in prison. I hope he gets the maximum sentence and never sees the light of day.

Save tax payers another dollar by not keeping this chump in prison and give him the death penalty just like he wanted to serve others.

The US is hyperventilating over a poorly trained terrorist. Now, if they could spend that money rehabilitating a poor or homeless person, I would applaud them.

Just for fun, suppose his plan had worked? Suppose he had blown up an airliner killing all those aboard not to mention those on the ground below. Do you think that poor or homeless person we rehabilitated could find the words to explain it to us and make all the families of the dead feel better? Would they be able to stop the non stop media frenzy that would carry on for years after the explosion was given some media friendly and catchy name like 9/11? Could that person stand up before this country and convince the population that there was no need to attack another country and seek revenge? I think the money is being spent in the right place and the homeless will just have to crash in the methadone clinic tonight

Do Islamists use deadly force in order to advance Islam? Are they doing what they do for religious reasons?

Bin Laden:

Yes. There are only three choices in Islam: either willing submission [i.e., conversion]; or payment of the jizya [poll-tax paid by non-Muslims], thereby bodily, though not spiritual, submission to the authority of Islam; or the sword—for it is not right to let him [an infidel] live.

The matter is summed up for every person alive: either submit, or live under the suzerainty of Islam, or die…. Such, then, is the basis of the relationship between the infidel and the Muslim. Battle, animosity, and hatred—directed from the Muslim to the infidel—is the foundation of our religion.”

(The Al Qaeda Reader, p. 42.)

Khalid Sheikh Mohammed's own words in his "9/11 Shura Council" document:

"With regards to these nine accusations that you are putting us on trial for; to us, they are not
accusations. To us they are badges of honor, which we carry with pride. Many thanks to God, for his kind gesture, and choosing us to perform the act of Jihad for his cause and to defend Islam and Muslims.

Therefore, killing you and fighting you, destroying you and terrorizing you, responding back to your
attacks, are all considered to be great legitimate duty in our religion." [...]

If we are fighting a war against common criminals who are doing what they do primarily for material rewards or political ambition, then our strategy should be very different from the strategy we should used in a war mainly motivated by religious ideology.

Do you disagree?

Even when I was a Catholic, some 40 Y's ago, it NEVER occurred to me that one could/should harm/kill others in the name of ANY Deity/Deieties!

Having aged a bit since then, and become familiar with the trail of death & destruction known collectivly as the history/heritge of the Catholic church, I just laugh, cynically when I hear Wee-Timmy-Dolan profess his totally amoral thologies, re the 'sacredness-of-human-Life', etc.

In fact, Cardian-Elect Dolan's anti-social-nonsense reminds one of a character, (also named 'Timmy'), from 'Southpark'!

Just as the vast, vast majority of Christians don't feel that murder is ever justified, but some extremists do (i.e. abortion clinic bombers / murderers, the Irish Republican Army, etc.) ... the same is true among Muslims.

Terrorists represent a tiny fraction of 1% of all Muslims.

They're political extremists, at essence, who feel that Western powers (and in the case of Al Qaida, primarily the U.S.) are to blame for the murders of many innocent Muslims, both directly, and via support of Israel.

See the beginning of this video for an exact articulation of Al Qaida's attempted justification for mass-murder of innocent people:

http://vimeo.com/31213605

I'm not sure even the terrorists would say they're acting in the name of their religion, as much as they say they're acting in the name of justice (as heinously twisted as close to all of us see that view as being).

However, if and when a terrorist does something in the name of their religion -- this tells us about the terrorist -- not about the religion (see: abortion clinic bombers / murderers).

You are right Sandin.
Jihadist suicide bombers who yell Allahu Akbar! when attacking innocents; pray five times a day facing Mecca; leave farewell videos laced with Koranic passages and wearing bandanas with Koranic verses have absolutely NOTHING to do with Islam.
Who could possibly doubt it.

So, let me get this straight on how these terror organizations work.

There are the suicide bombers.

And then there's the guy who sends them out.

So how exactly do you "work your way" up the ranks in these organizations?

Disaffected and mentally ill, this man single highhandedly is the reason every citizen in America is now treated like a criminal by the TSA. Some things are still very weird. He is in Yemen and manages to get on an airplane to the States without a passport? His father called the CIA to warn them about his son and still he gets on a plane. I am not going for the testimony from someone who is obviously not in is right mind. The whole things smells and he is an unreliable witness in his own defense or declaration of guilt.

Yep.

I think it's pertinent to note that his own father turned him in.

A lot of people make up things about "Muslims" and their attitudes regarding terrorism.

Nationally, over the last decade, American Muslims themselves have been the number one source for reporting potential terrorists to authorities.

http://sanford.duke.edu/centers/tcths/about/documents/Kurzman_Muslim-American_Terrorism_Since_911_An_Accounting.pdf

In this case, the person reporting the terrorist wasn't only not American, but he was the terrorist's own father.

I'm not sure about anyone else reading -- but I started to get a much better feeling about Muslims in general when I realized that the vast, vast majority of Muslims are clearly (as demonstrated by their actions, including turning in potential terrorists) as strongly against terrorism as the rest of us are.

"vast majority of Muslims are clearly (as demonstrated by their actions, including turning in potential terrorists) as strongly against terrorism as the rest of us are. "

Wrong.

Support for Jihadism. Pew Research study.

"American Muslims under age 30-- 15%(!!!) suicide bombings in the defense of Islam can often or sometimes be justified."
"The survey also finds that native-born African-American Muslims-- 9% express favorable opinion of Al Qaeda."

Anyone who thinks one can find same stats among non-Muslim Americans needs to get immediate help. Sandin, pay attention.
04:52 AM on 02/12/2012
The problem is, if you would remember the facts instead of a few incidents that support your claims, you would remember the millions of muslims that cheered in the streets when 9/11 happened. And at that moment in time, none of the so called great leaders of muslim condemned the actions. This is why americans have some trouble with muslims in general. What you fail to realize is that americans may be weary about those professing to be muslim but they normally do not automatically hate all muslims. People are people and are usually accepted or not based on their behaviors as a person, not their race, religion etc. In additon, amercians cannot understand how the muslims also hate jews just for being jew. contrary to too many liberal minded folks in the u.s. most americans just want to live their own life and support themselves and their family if they have one. America has been the envy of the world for too long so its easy to hate. Just as nowadays the liberals with obama leading the way are turning americans into a hating bunch because of the envy of a rich person.

That could describe many elected leaders in many countries.

In the U.S.?

Not many.

Millions of our fellow Americans worship as Muslims, and over the last decade, less than 300 of them have been arrested on suspicion of involvement with terrorism -- and American Muslims themselves were the number one source for reporting those people to authorities.

Less than 300 that we know of. I don't feel safer.

I must admit they have as much a right to be here. They have a rich culture to contribute.

But I do agree, the American Muslim community are the # 1 source to report possible act of terrorism.
