America's Shrinking Corporate Giants: 24/7 Wall St.

General Motors

24/7 Wall St.:

It is rare for one of America’s largest companies to lose a third or more of its sales in a brief time. When it happens, it is usually either because of market or economic forces, or because of a designed refocusing. 24/7 Wall St. identified the eight largest American companies whose revenue fell the most in the past five years and analyzed the reasons behind the drops.

Am I the only one that noticed that about 1/3 of the businesses listed as "shrinking corporate giants" were also on the "stocks predicted to do well in 2012" list??

That's some awfully conflicting information. I have to assume that means one of two things: A) These particular companies plan on drastic cost-cutting - i.e. layoffs - to turn a profit for their shareholders or B) There are two drastically different narratives circulating about the state of our economy which leads me to wonder - why? and who? To what end?

So have we reached the point we can out source the boardrooms yet? The boardrooms said outsourcing manufacturing was a great idea so why not for theer positions too? Think of the savings to investors in getting a company with bad management for a $1 a day! Why pay millions?

GM wants to buyout pensions of most of those receiving a pension from GM. Pensions are a huge drag on GM and GM wants to get rid of as many pension payouts as they can to make it look better for investors to invest in GM again. GM is still in a world of hurt. No more bailouts. GM had better take care of its own money woes and not lean on the taxpayer to pay those pensions. There are something like 400,000 pensioners from GM.

Your information is wrong...GM turned the union pensions over to the unions just before the bankruptcy and health care as well...and the deal was finalized in bankruptcy...GM had ended pensions for salaried some 10 or 12 years ago...what a person has is frozen at that level and can not increase at all...new hires receive nothing more then a 401K. Salaried keeps health care which the company not match increases for until 65 after that a small stipend for a medicare wrap around ...thats all folks...your information is false. Why do you post about things you know little about?

When this group of pensioners is gone...there will be no more at GM or other places either and this will make America a poorer place...and is nothing to celebrate...globalism has done nothing good for American companies or for workers.

In the case of GM, incompetent management played a huge roll, not investing in more fuel efficient cars and they lost the edge with the Volt, even the dealers are refusing to stock the car.

The Volt is a remarkable car but was never expected to be a big seller...niche car. In time as oil rises, more people will be interested. Personally, I would love to buy one.

Want an example ? My house went up by £30,000 last month according to this article. I'll borrow some more money and buy a new car. Who cares that it was built in Korea. It's cheaper than GM.

You're reading what I said wrong. I made up an example of what went on over the past thirty years to back up my previous comment about the housing market. Here in the UK people are paying off thirty year mortgages because they increased the loan to buy new cars/ have holidays that they couldn't afford using the imagined increase in their house value etc. It was all so easy that the banks only wanted to lend money for the housing market and other businesses suffered. It's not just here. It's all over the western world. The housing market manipulated by the money men - the reason we're all bust. China has got all our money and all our ious as a result of the spending spree that people thought was real, but was a mirage.

All that the western world has done for the past thirty years is obsess with housing. It's the only market banks, insurers, city types and all the rest have put money into. All around the world. Mess with house prices. It's why the house of cards fell down and it's why we've lost our standards of living to asia. RIP the western lifestyle

I'll analyze the reason for the drops without even reading the referenced article.

1) Outsourcing of jobs.
2) Laying off workers.
3) People have less discretionary income to buy their products.

In the case of GM, people who are out of work do not buy a lot of new cars so that is that is line 2a) but you have to add incompetent management to that list...
07:11 AM on 02/13/2012
When GM shed the 100 thousands of jobs in 2006 thru buyouts , they also shed 100 thousands of customers. The parking lots in thier factories were 99.9% GM .Lets not forget the # 1 car maker went into bankruptcy to brake thier labor contracts. Its time to say good-bye to all too big to fail. You couldn't give me a GM.

are they shrinking? or bailing ship from the hull they worked so hard to destroy with their greed?

They are probably totally outsourcing themselves, but will still except the US gov to completely protect their products and domination of the USA.

Just why do corporations and the super rich hate America so damn much?

It's not that they hate America, it's that they love globalism. All the super rich do.

Would that be shrinking here in the US and expanding globally, as they have been for decades now?!

They have already raped the US and now are raping other nations around the globe.

They've drained the US of its wealth and resources and are leaving a trail of decay behind them, which we will have to live with and try to repair with what little we have been left to work with.

This author has no sense of history, GM lost its financing arm from the Countryside Mortgage debacle. Why should the UAW finance stupidity by the executives of the company. I stopped reading the article when it was about Ford who made the error of putting to much weight on Bridgestone Tires with their RV lines causing crashes. Stupid is, as stupid does, I wish I could be that stupid and get that much money.

GM was guilty of the same thing that killed Kodak, arrogance. Companies reach a certain size and just can't believe that they could ever fail. They ignore new trends and technologies and just continue on in a " To big to fail" mode. Then , they fail.
