Jeremy Lin, Knicks Star, Shouldn't Be Too Quick To Plug Product

Jeremy Lin

Doug Shabelman, whose company matches athletes with endorsements, has a piece of advice for instant Knicks sensation Jeremy Lin: Take it slow.

Not on the court, but in advertising.

"You don't want to do too much too soon," said Shabelman, the president of Burns Entertainment and Sports Marketing. "Concentrate on basketball, make sure the team wins."

At a time when media can mint celebrities almost instantly, Lin presents a welcomed problem for the Knicks, the NBA and his own management team. There are probably lots of short-term gigs available to a smiling, articulate, boy-next-door underdog who sleeps on his brother's couch. But aggressively packaging him too soon could backfire.

"He could fizzle out," Shabelman said. "You never know."

Lin, the first American-born NBA player of Taiwanese or Chinese background, went from an overlooked, Harvard-educated benchwarmer to international star last week. Taking over as point guard for a lousy Knicks team, he became the first player in NBA history to collect at least 20 points and seven assists in his first four starts. He out-dueled Kobe Bryant and the Lakers Friday night and scored the winning point against the Minnesota Timberwolves on Saturday night.

The Knicks have won five straight since Lin became a fixture. The best strategy Lin and his personal team can employ is to let his breakout and the team's winning become long-term, while avoiding the temptation to over-groom his image. "We've had clients where you just let them be them," said Ronn Torossian, whose 5WPR agency has represented ex-Knicks Allan Houston and Jalen Rose, and former boxing champion Roy Jones Jr. "I don't think you need to do a ton with Lin. He's authentic. He's clearly hard working."

Shabelman said Lin can begin reaping the spoils of his supernova-exploding fame on a reasonable scale. He recommended that Lin stick with the basics for now: soft drinks, snack foods, or perhaps a telecom company. Much of it will be local, but given that the locality is New York, the payoff could be huge. Sustained success will lead to more national and global endorsements.

The opportunities overseas -- especially in Asian markets -- will multiply once he's fully established. Lin's agent, Roger Montgomery, told Forbes his client already is exploring deals with Asian companies. The agent said Lin was seeking product endorsements that reflect his determination.

Lin has other factors going for him that will attract advertisers. He isn't freakishly tall (6-foot-3-inches) or imposing. "He's relatable," Torossian said. "He looks like he would be playing pickup basketball anywhere."

Branding wonks have thrown out many comparisons to Lin's ascent, now dubbed "Linsanity." They include Rudy Ruettiger, the Notre Dame walk-on who became the subject of a Hollywood movie; the archetype of the Broadway understudy who goes from nobody to headliner; and Tim Tebow, the quarterback whose late-game heroics guided the Denver Broncos to the NFL playoffs -- and who shares Lin's openly religious side.

By any reference, Lin's marketing potential is sky-high. He reportedly has a shoe contract with Nike, and other deals will likely follow. The question isn't whether Lin will get paid plenty to push product; it's whether he can do it over the long haul.

"If this guy keeps going, forget it," Torossian said. "He's a marketer's dream. He's Tiger Woods pre-scandal -- and to top it all off he's playing in the biggest media market in the world."

Cause there is no "Asian Voices" so anyone of color (except Latinos) will be thrown into the Black section.

During this contracted season, I don't see how he will have the time to devote to any endorsements. It's only been a week since he got noticed, and he should be concerned with doing advertisement? Jeez people, give the guy a chance to get an apartment of his own and to work on his game with his teammates on the Knicks, maybe get some sleep...

Don't agree with this article at all. Over exposure is a problem but missing out while the irons hot is a bigger mistake. Shabelman is probably not working with Lin and is jealous, trust me thats how marketers are. As long as the endorsements are chosen carefully go all in and get the money while people are willing to give it to you. If Lin gets hurt or he starts playing poorly when the stars return he could miss out on tons of money.

The NBA needs something to get people interested again. Knowing the NBA is little more then the WWE but not as honest has turned me away these past three years. Maybe this kid can ignite some excitement and people can try to forget how corrupt it is.

Bad advice. THe fact taht there is a risk that he could fizzle, is the risk of the company who hires him for advertising not the risk of Mr. Lin. Mr. Lin needs to hit while the Iron is hot and get some money now. Do something tasteful and something that is relatively mild - see michael jordan commercials. But definitely move now. Exactly why should he wait? He's not a multi-millionaire player that got a big contract. He needs the money and he should move. This marketeer is a horrible advisor. Mr. Lin should definitely stay clear of this dude.

Let's get excited for Lin. An intelligent player who is doing well, even if it is for a moment. NY needed a boost.

He could make a ton of deals for Asian companies that are not known in the USA. I was surprised at the number of US stars that made ads for Japanese companies when I was in Tokyo. Asian electronics, Asian Airlines, all open to him right now. Taiwan and Chinese broadcasters picked up the Knicks games to show in Asian ONLY because of JLin.

Man give the guy some props. He was on the bench with no name recognition and took advantage of an opportunity to stand out. Good job!

I agre, it is pretty obvious he is having better results with the team than Mello who is such a selfish player. Denver and clearly New York is doing better without him on the floor.

Melo averages 3.5 assist per game for his career.... hard to call that selfish... its actually above average for a scoring small forward. But it fits your narrative so since he is a scorer (and a great one at that) he must be selfish.,

And he is a carrer 46 percent shooter from the floor which means he takes great shoots OR is just flat out good.

Don't think they can get a championship this year.
For one thing, they have to go through the Heat.

BUT, 10 days ago it did not look like they would have a .500 season.
And it REALLY looked like they would miss the playoffs.

If JLin can be a merely competent PG, they have a shot at a playoff spot.

IOW, take a step back yellow man. Oh and also, we'd rather not handle Harvard educated clients who will question our standard exploitative practices we rely on to control our typically undereducated talent stable.

Here's an idea? How about Jeremy Lin handles whatever inquiries come his way, and he can decide what's too distracting and what direction his career takes. In courtside interviews he's almost obsequiously humble. I hardly thinks he needs the unsolicited advice of some show biz shark to tell him how to behave.

Enjoy your 15 minutes of fame.
The NBA has a lot of great players and a few games with a hot hand doesn't mean a walk to the hall of fame.
