Did Anil Potti, Former Duke Cancer Researcher, Conduct Research Fraud?

First Posted: 02/13/2012 2:53 pm Updated: 02/14/2012 10:39 am

Dr. Anil Potti, a Duke University cancer researcher, resigned from his job at the university in late 2010, after questions were raised about his studies on personalized cancer treatments. A new CBS "60 Minutes" piece, which aired last night, explores whether Potti's work wasn't just wrong, but actual fraud.

Before Potti resigned, he was placed on administrative leave after it was discovered that he had exaggerated his credentials by saying he was a Rhodes scholar, the New York Times reported. The discovery of this deception led to the American Cancer Society suspending hundreds of thousands of dollars in grant money meant to fund his work.

Nine of Potti's papers have been retracted from medical journals thus far, Duke University's The Chronicle reported. The most recent was retracted this month, published in 2007 in the Journal of Clinical Oncology, which looked at platinum-based therapy for ovarian cancer.

Potti's work in individualized treatments for cancer was regarded as "the holy grail of cancer," Dr. Rob Califf, the vice chancellor of clinical research at Duke, said on 60 Minutes. Personalized cancer treatments, if they work, could be a last hope for people whose bodies don't respond to the conventional treatments.

Patients enrolled in trials for these drugs, and were told that they had an 80 percent chance the right drug for them would be found, 60 Minutes reported.

However, outside researchers who reviewed Potti's study data found troubling errors.

"It became clear that there was no explanation other than there was a manipulation," Dr. Joseph Nevins, who worked with Potti in the Nevins Lab at Duke, said on 60 Minutes. " A manipulation of the data, a manipulation of somebody's credentials and a manipulation of a lot of people's trust."

WRAL reported that some of those patients who were involved in the trials have filed suit against Duke and the researchers involved.

WRAL reported last year:

The group is seeking compensatory and punitive damages in the case, alleging that Duke tried to cover up questions about the research and performed unnecessary chemotherapy on people in hopes of patenting and spinning off a cancer-screening test.

Potti declined to comment on the investigation to 60 Minutes, but he told them in an email that ""My primary concern at all times is and will be the care of patients and seeking new ways to treat cancer."

He exaggerated his credentials - just like Vivek Wadhwa does routinely. He was sporting the title of "Director of Research" at Duke University... promoted himself to "professor"... turns out he had a courtesy title and was an adjunct professor without a doctorate. Yet he parades his research and overstates his qualifications.

There seems to be quite a bit of exaggerations going on at Duke. They really need to take a second look at Wadhwa's research because he exaggerated the facts tremendously in at least one of his "studies".

Duke needs to be careful in how they use the word "research" and "researcher". Anything presented to the public as research needs to be peer reviewed. What Wadhwa does is self-marketing and pushing a political agenda - not research.

This is nothing new. The doctor likely ticked off pharma and so was scapegoated. People need to wake up that this is conventional medicine US style. Nothing is going to change until people start to wake up to the many different ways we are being poisoned. For all of us I hope it's soon because we are one unhealthy nation.

Do you have any evidence that he "ticked off pharma and so was scapegoated" or are you making stuff up?

I'm sorry, but "he had exaggerated his credentials by saying he was a Rhodes scholar"...and no one caught onto this when he applied to become faculty?????

What kind of numbskulls do they have doing the hiring? How many Rhodes Scholars in the last 50 years? 150? 200? And they tend to have other accolades that follow...Pulitzers, Palme D'Ors, election to higher political office, appointments to SCOTUS, POTUS...that sort of thing. Not all Rhodes Scholars are so well known, but a lot. Those that aren't, it's pretty easy to find the list. The guy that did the laser surgery on my eyes...Rhodes Scholar. I only know because I happened to have checked him out before I had it done. Took all of 2 minutes.

Think about it; about as many people have received Oscars in the 'Big 4' categories (best actor, best actress, best director, best picture) as have received Rhodes scholarships in the last 50 years. If he'd put on his CV that he received a 'Best Actor' Oscar, would they have just accepted that at face value too?

I've done backgrounds form potential faculty hires sometimes and this is very basic stuff.

Dr. Potti is now practicing medicine in another state - his specialty? Cancer!

If a loved one of mine received Potti's fraudulent treatment, and died, as many did, I would also sue. Researchers playing with the hearts and minds of vulnerable cancer patients should have every license in their name revoked by Professional Regulations in ALL states.

And we are surprised why? Corruption is the word of the century!!!
Keep thinking punishing anti social behavior is bad and this is what you get!!
07:41 AM on 02/14/2012
To not punish anti social behavior is to condone it. To condone anti social behavior is to think ripping people off is a good thing. I think your thinking is wrong

Wow, yrn2Bfree simply said he is not suprised because of the number of corruption cases. Than he states that people who think we shouldn't punish anti social behavior are wrong. Old Nurse states we should punish anti social behavior because if we don't, than we excuse (condone) it. And if we excuse it, than we are saying that ripping people off is acceptable. Old Nurse finishes, by saying she thinks yrn2Bfree's thinking is flawed. Sorry Old Nurse but your actually agreeing with yrn2Bfree and so do I. With one exception, I don't think that this behavior is an epidemic.

The bright side is ... at least he can resign and need not worry about filling his tank while looking for another career ... afterall, flying carpets merely run on air.

What is it with the Indian (from India) corruption lately. First the hedge fund guy and now in research at Duke. As a contractor, I had to stop quoting any work to Indians or Chinese. They seemed to think everything was cheap and free, I had to remind them they were in the USA.

More and more Researchers and Scientist, in all areas of study are being caught manipulating data, in order to follow the money trail. This is so despicable that Scientist and Researchers supposed forward thinkers of great intelligence could let Greed lead them astray. Who Can You Trust??
11:50 PM on 02/15/2012
Trust the scientific process but not individual scientists. When work cannot be independently replicated, then you should not accept the findings.

cure for aging / cure for gangrene

I do have that would sum up the cure for kleptomania. Point blank period. Maybe, i will get that grant one day. I'm seeking funds for the cure for cancer i have. I'm a "home" scientist so i'm sure there are the skeptics then again they don't have to receive any help from me, being that much i experienced they think is funny especially my father. Angst violent racial hate crimes a total of 7 at the least. The cure for cancer i have one product w/ five uses Pill, Solution, Creme, Fluid & Inhalant. Not sure if they could top that outside of zapping them with big machines. Ionno' some people like pain. I too am working on a vaccine I had the vaccine for aids/hiv but it failed 3 out of 100 people 97% success rate Good grief what more could they want?

did he work for planned parenthood ? Imagine, now I will always wonder....did they not find a research for cancer because the donations were going to planned parenthood and other causes instead of toward actual cancer research....perhaps they would have found a cure by now how they not diverted their monies?
12:50 AM on 02/14/2012
Do you seriously think that the Susan B. Koman charity works towards curing cancer? You need to do some research before giving your money. One of the main complaints against Koman is that they only fund cancer screening, in other words they have absolutely nothing to do with trying to find a cure for cancer, they only offer treatments and diagnosis help. You seem too hyoed up ion the Planned parenthood thing to be able to understand anything rationally.

exaggerated he was a rhodes scholar? everybody knows you have to have connections to the illuminati to get that.... maybe they didn't take too kindly to his braggadocio.

seriously though, why the heck would this happen? Laziness coupled with an overinflated EGO? Drug company backroom bribes? It's seriously fracked up when those we hold to the highest esteem and trustworthiness let us down so callously.
