Bill Maher Mocks Newt Gingrich Attack On New York 'Elites' (VIDEO)

First Posted: 02/13/2012 9:41 am Updated: 02/14/2012 2:11 pm

Bill Maher Gop Elites

The current primary race has heard its fair share of pro-"Real America" and anti-"Liberal Elite" talk thus far, but nothing stood out to comedian Bill Maher quite like Newt Gingrich's recent remarks about New Yorkers.

On Friday night's "Real Time," Maher mocked Gingrich for blasting New York "elites" for living in high rises and riding the subway while speaking in Las Vegas (of all places).

Aside from the fact that New Yorkers of every socioeconomic status ride the train, Maher didn't understand how a "shrieking, creaking, lurching, airless, underground tomb" could be considered "elitist" -- especially considering Gingrich's moon dreams:

"Why dont they travel like real Americans, on a spaceship to the moon!" Maher joked.

Watch the clip above to hear more of Maher's subway humor as well as his issue with jokes about liberal "elite" states like Massachusetts (Or "Taxachusetts") getting raucous applause at CPAC:

"You mean the state that's number one in education, number one in health care and is basically where our country started? Yeah, screw them," Maher joked.

The MBTA has a Silver Line, but that doesn't seem elite enough.

Know what the difference between Bill and Rush is, Bill invites conservative guest on his show, he even dose conservative dominated panels, he treats them with respect, even when they dominate the conversation with their favorite tactic the filibuster.

Rush just spits and slobbers in his microphone for 3 hours.

The repubs listen to Rush with their mouth open so they can readily swallow the garbage he spews every time he's on the air.Bill has more intelligent and relevant things to say.

That's because gop AM talk radio is about making the audience feel simultaneously victimized and empowered via some convoluted conspiracy theory.  They'll only bring in the opposition if they can somehow reinforce that viewpoint.

As long as my son doesn't grow up to be like Bill Maher, I'll be proud of him. It's my one stipulation.
04:13 PM on 02/14/2012
You should be lucky, Bill knows bullchit when he smells it.
04:51 PM on 02/14/2012
He doesn't have to be like him, but it would be nice if her were as smart as him.

Unlike yourself of course.

Divide and conquer. Make the guy in the trailer park in Iowa hate the guy in the trailer park in Indiana.
04:14 PM on 02/14/2012
The sad part is, there stupid enough to do it.
02:55 PM on 02/14/2012
Oh Bill, you always say it like it is and it's so refreshing. I don't even think they believe half the nonsense that they spew, it's called playing on people's fears and ignorance with hopes of dividing and conquering.

Maher makes a VERY good point. The Right is very quick to mock and deride Massachusetts and other more liberal and social states. However, when you put pen to paper, there are a number of glaring holes in their logic. MA and other "Socialist" states are predominantly net payers to the federal government, while the Right leaning states are predominantly net takers; effectively suckling from the Welfare Teat - pausing just long enough to call Obama a Socialist Nazi. Despite this, MA and other such states provide the best education and best public support services of any states in the country. These are also the states with the highest per capita earnings and standards of living coupled with unemployment well below the federal average; meaning, MA not only has MORE jobs, and BETTER jobs. All despite the horrible corporate tax burden, excessive regulation and high wages the Right has been yelling about since the 70's.

Oh, and those are the states with the highest incidence of unwed, teenage mothers as well as divorce. YAY FAMILY VALUES!!!
04:17 PM on 02/14/2012
Good point. That's why red client states are "called right to work for less states", in short the 3rd world.
11:49 AM on 02/15/2012
It's why I can't help but think that maybe we go with Ron Paul. We drop most federal assistance programs and MA (and CA as well) starts keeping the Billions in welfare being paid to support the red states. MA regulates well beyond federal standards in pretty much every regard; thus, the federal standards become irrelevant anyhow and they keep Billions for just doing the same thing they've been doing.

However, the "bootstraps" rhetoric sounds really good when it is taken entirely out of the real-world context...

Funny how a former speaker of the house, who makes several million a year, who has revolving credit for $500,000 at Tiffanys is decrying Washington elites. In the dictionary under the definition of hypocricy, they have a picture of Newt.
