Matt Grevers, Annie Chandler Engaged: Olympic Swimmer Proposes On Medal Stand (VIDEO)

First Posted: 02/13/2012 11:28 am Updated: 02/15/2012 2:50 pm

Rarely has so much depended on U.S. Olympic swimmer Matt Grevers earning spot on the medal stand. Thankfully, everything went according to plan for Grevers on Saturday. After winning the gold in the 100-meter backstroke at the Missouri Grand Prix on Saturday night, the 26-year-old pulled off a surprise marriage proposal to his girlfriend, and USA national swimming teammate, Annie Chandler... on the medal stand.

Chandler, 24, placed the medal on Grevers and walked out of the way as the ceremony continued. She walked back over to him after the silver and bronze winners left the stand following some photos. The unsuspecting Chandler then stood up on the stand with Grevers when he dropped to one knee, stunning her as well as the crowd with a public proposal.

She immediately said yes.

According to the Associated Press, Grevers' older brother Andy sneaked his sibling the diamond engagement ring.

"I took it out a little fast because my heart was racing the whole time," he said. "If I didn't get first it wouldn't have worked out so well."

Grevers won a gold medal in the 2008 Olympics as a preliminary relay swimmer and a silver in the 100 meter backstroke.

I must be hopelessly out of touch and old fashioned or something, but I still think the proposal moment should be a private and sacred event, not a choreographed, you-tube video display. Don't get me wrong, I wish them well but really, how many stories can we read in one week about this? Football players, swimmers, celebs.....what's wrong with cooking her a nice dinner and sliding a ring box over to her, or taking a long hike and proposing at a scenic overlook? With just the two of you. On a related note, I find it weird that so many couples choose to do the same publicity stunts when their child is born. You need the mom, the dad, the doctor, a nurse or two, that's it. All your sisters, in-laws, best friends, co-workers, etc don't need to witness the very private moment of birth.....let them come in when you are covered up, the baby is cleaned up a bit, and when the medical team is finished with the work.

it's just your opinion that this should be private. it is however, like you said, a personal moment. this means it's up to the individual to do what they choose because it's going to be their memory, not yours. also, comparing a marriage proposal to birth is silly.

I have to share how I proposed to my lovely wife two years ago :)

Essentially, I went around recording our family and friends wishing us well and congratulations, and then compiled a DVD out of it. Then I got my 3 of my then-girlfriend's closest friends to tell her that they would be getting together to catch up on a weekend at one of their houses.....which was actually a cover for an engagement celebration. I then told her that I would be hanging with some of my friends the same day she was supposed to get together with her friends. This was to appease her curious mind since she pays attention to detail.

In any case, she arrived at her friend's house, only to be greeted by 20-30 of her friends yelling, "SURPRISE!!!!!!". She was really confused and laughing, because her birthday had already passed and there weren't any special occasions coming up. At that moment, I emerged from a closet door with roses in my hands. She couldn't stop laughing and smiling because she was so surprised. I then got down on one knee and asked for her hand, to which she replied, "Of course!" :)

All of us together then watched the DVD I made (which was about 1 hour long), and then enjoyed a whole bunch of food afterwards.

It was the happiest day of my life.......until we got married in 2011 that is :)

I love these stories, I might not have gotten a romantic one, but every girl dreams of it, and the man giving the ring to her since a young age. Heres to many years together and not having the media rip their new lives together apart
