Rick Santorum, Mitt Romney Tied Nationally As Romney Struggles with Base, New Polls Show

Romney Santorum Tied

Posted: 02/13/2012 2:28 pm

Despite a victory in the Maine caucuses on Saturday, Mitt Romney has more to worry about after two new polls released Monday show him fighting to keep his lead among Republicans nationally and struggling to win favor from the conservative base.

A new Pew Research Center poll found Santorum and Romney neck-and-neck, with Santorum winning 30 percent of the support among Republican registered voters to Romney's 28 percent -- a difference that falls well within the poll's five percentage point margin of error. Separately, Gallup's latest tracking survey of the Republican race found Romney with 32 percent support and Santorum right on his heels with 30 percent.

Of concern for Romney, the Pew poll shows him struggling among the conservative groups that make up the Republican base. Among self-identified conservatives, Santorum leads Romney by an 11 percent margin, 36 percent to 25 percent. Among Tea Party supporters, Santorum leads 42 percent to 23 percent.

Romney's support among Tea Party supporters is essentially unchanged from last month, when he received 26 percent support from Tea Party supporters to 24 percent each for Santorum and Newt Gingrich. But Santorum's lead among the group may be a sign that they have begun to see him as the alternative to Romney.

Worse still for Romney, the survey contains signs that Tea Party opinion of him has worsened over the last few months on two key issues: his conservative credentials and his ideological consistency. Since November, the percentage of Tea Party supporters telling Pew that they do not believe Romney is a strong Republican has grown from 41 percent to 68 percent, and the percent saying Romney does not take consistent positions on the issues has grown from 40 percent to 56 percent.

The Pew survey also shows evidence of Santorum's appeal to evangelical conservatives and Catholics within the Republican party. Though Romney leads Santorum among white mainline Protestants, Santorum leads Romney among white evangelical Protestants (41 percent to 23 percent) and white Catholics (37 percent to 27 percent). In a Pew survey last month, Romney and Santorum were tied at 22 percent among white evangelicals, while Romney led Santorum 33 percent to 17 percent among white Catholics.

The latter group has become especially important in the primary battle as attention is focused on new Obama administration regulations aimed at providing contraception coverage for women via their employer-run health plans. The plan includes coverage for women employed by religious employers, though some such organizations feel that the regulations are a violation of their religious beliefs.

The new Pew Research Center poll was conducted Feb. 8 to 12 among 552 Republican or Republican-leaning registered voters, and has a margin of error of 5 percentage points. The latest Gallup tracking survey was conducted Feb. 8 through 12 among 1162 Republican and Republican-leaning registered voters.

The tie is Good News for Obama

The reality that they do not have
any serious candidates
is finally starting to set in
for both Republicans
and Independants.

Santorum and Paul are fringe candidates
who have never been taken seriously;

Santorum could not even win
reelection in his own district.

Romney long ago abandoned politics
to chase the almighty buck.

Where is the choice?

The time for Republicans to traditionally
run somebody up the flag pole
and hope they get a salute is over..

I must "Oh Mitt" voting for anyone who is supported by the banks that took my tax money for a bail out then took my kids house and mine house (I co-signed) via this robot forclosure policy. Sure I won all my law suits, got my monies returned. But as a republican who voted for Obama I can say without a doubt my party doesn't get it, doesn't have a clue, win the white house at all costs, protect big business profits, remain addicted to cheap undocumented labor. You have no solidarity, supported by businesses that took peoples homes, and got your canidate on a CNN video" I'm not worried about poor people". I hereby renounce my loyalty.

What a choice. If Santorum (God forbid!) gets elected, disobedient children will be put to death. If Romney (God forbid!) gets elected, we will be referring to the First Ladies, instead of the First Lady. It's the day of the cults. Now you know why the Popes of the Middle Ages would crush these wacko groups, before they could become dangerous.

Rick Santorum is as Rick Santorum does . Mitt Romney is as Mitt Romney doesn't . Throughout the entire campaign Mitt has been revising his platform and readjusting it to accommodate the level of the crowd he is addressing . Rick has not had to do that .The people he is talking to already know where he stands and don't have to wait for him to create an image that might be pleasing to them . Mitt is as phony as they come . Santorum is as real as one man can be. I say that even when I probably would not vote for him .

It is pretty clear now that religio-krazy Santorum will be the Republican Tea Party nominee.

Slightly more right and left here, but if this is all the GOP can dredge up, they have no chance in November against Obama. The Repubs are just too divided on almost everything. Obama may just win on the old "better the devil you know" theory. Whoever wins, it is going to be a rough ride for all of us for the next 4 years...

One of the reasons Romney might be losing in the polls to Santorum is because Romney may be viewed as a draft dodger because of his three draft deferments. Santorum never had to face this issue because of his age. Gingrich is also seen as a draft dodger. Only Paul Ryan served his country when he was called.

I meant Ron Paul.

Why should that matter? They voted for Bush/Cheney, didn't they?
01:38 PM on 02/14/2012
i don't see how anyone with sense could vote for either one of these clowns. there's Santorum, who can't tolerate the reality of america today and is a willfully ignorant science denier, or Romney, who would be like voting corporate america into the white house. i'm not sure whether to think that the GOP is truly bankrupt of ideas and talent, or that they see obama's re-election as inevitable.

I was worried Mitt would be a moderate voice in the republican party who would galvanize the center. Didn't happen. Now we get 4 more years and probably the Senate and House back in Democratic hands. The rush to the right by Mitt is sad. Appeasing Teabaggers and the religous right is not a winner. Simply not enough votes. Santorum is a joke. His religous views once fully aired will bite him. His view of sex only during marriage and procreation will alienate the young. His conservative idealogy will terminate medicare so the blue hairs will be frightend and stay home. What a joke!

Oh, for cat's sake! Santorum would be Man of the Century if this were the 10th century. He won't last. And as for Mitt, as long as he hangs around with biased advisors such as Kobach, he won't have such a happy outcome, especially if he thinks Hispanics and other non-Euro/Anglo people in this country are going to be happy about voting for him.

I'd like to see Romney and Santorum send their kids off to war.

I don't pay too much attention to this who will win the GOP nomination stuff, in the end whoever it is will be far better than Obama. When the man is picked the GOP will come together stronger than ever to defeat the president we have...Obama continues to work on issues that should be last on his agenda instead of first...Americans want jobs, Americans want to pay off our debt not add to our debt, Americans want to see these housing problems go away, these are just a few issues Obama has failed to do anything about...he has only added to the problem. I will not vote for someone...I will be voting against someone...and that person is Obama
01:02 PM on 02/14/2012
Thats hillarious. Thanks for the laugh. Your "anyone is better than Obama"
attitude is exactly why Obama will win again. There is no organization in the GOP. Just distrust and mudslinging. Obama will have no problems this year no matter which of these jokers they place beside him.
02:10 PM on 02/14/2012
I think Mitt could beat Obama however, he won't be the GOP nominee, too much religious bigotry against Mitt from the fanatic, super conservative bible thumpers. So instead they will put up Santorum who will not have a chance against Obama and company.

I don't listen to any of these lawyer/wordsmiths any longer. They just keep talking and spinning yarn and out of all those thousands of words I can't really say what any of them are providing as solutions to given problems. Same old same old - vote for me and everything will be wonderful.

We need a leader, someone we can rally behind. Maybe he/she will come forward - soon!
