Ryan Brunn Police Interview: Tape Of Jorelys Rivera Killer Released

GREG BLUESTEIN   02/13/12 03:56 PM ET  AP

ATLANTA — "I didn't have, like, the intention of killing a kid," Ryan Brunn told police after he pleaded guilty to molesting a girl, slashing her throat and dumping her body in a trash bin. In a candid, three-hour interview, Brunn went into detail about how and why he lured the girl to an empty apartment – and when he made the decision to kill her.

Convicted child killers don't often agree to such frank interviews with police, and in this case, Brunn gave them a glimpse into the mind of a murderer.

"I've never done something like this in my life," said Brunn, who recounted his thoughts after the murder. "`Am I going to get caught?' I didn't think I was. I was going so crazy I left the gloves, I left the ties on the floor."

The worker gloves and plastic ties were among several pieces of evidence that linked Brunn to the Dec. 2 killing.

That evening, the apartment complex maintenance worker was able to get Jorelys Rivera's attention as she left a playground to fetch drinks for her friends. Sometime earlier, Brunn noticed the 7-year-old girl had lost a roller skate outside her apartment. He snapped a photo of it and used that image to coax the girl into a vacant unit.

Once there, he molested her, beat her and slit her throat. For three days, police searched for Jorelys. Brunn even joined the search one evening. Investigators found her in a trash bin at the apartment complex.

Jorelys family has sued the apartment complex managers, accusing them of failing to properly check Brunn's background. The lawsuit claims Brunn was retained despite residents' complaints about him lingering at the playground watching children. A manager at the apartment complex didn't immediately return a telephone call from The Associated Press.

Brunn was in custody for more than a month before he decided to plead guilty and was sentenced to life in prison without parole. About an hour after a judge handed down his punishment, Brunn sat in a cramped office and spoke with two Georgia Bureau of Investigations officers.

Two days later, Brunn hanged himself in his prison cell with a gray sweatshirt. Video of the interview was released to the news media last week.

In the interview, the investigators delved into Brunn's history and practiced different techniques to gain his trust. Sometimes they encouraged him to complete sentences and thoughts by staying quiet themselves. Other times they asked leading questions, prompting Brunn to correct them or offer more insight.

During one exchange, Brunn said it was only after the girl asked to go to the bathroom that he realized he could go to jail if he released her. It was then he decided he had to kill her.

"I know this is hard to say, but I don't think what happened would have happened if she hadn't gone to the bathroom," Brunn said.

Detailed interviews of the kind investigators conducted with Brunn can reveal patterns of behavior before, during and after a crime, said Bob Ingram, a retired Georgia Bureau of Investigation agent who has conducted dozens of such interrogations.

"You can read books and you can study cases, but I think the true learning takes place when you interview the offenders after the fact," said Ingram, who teaches law enforcement interviewing techniques.

GBI Special Agent Dustin Hamby, who helped interview the 20-year-old Brunn, said he learned that young suspects should be confronted early with physical evidence to elicit a confession more quickly.

"He told us that he had resolved himself to not tell the truth, but had we put a picture or the gloves that we found at the scene that he left, that he potentially would have confessed at that point or admitted that he was involved," Hamby said.

The investigators offered their own theories when Brunn wouldn't divulge details. During one exchange, the agents pressed Brunn repeatedly on how Jorleys got deep cuts on her face and chest.

"It's either you hesitating to try to get the courage up to cut her throat or you're trying to get her to do what you want her to do or it's just plain out torture," Hamby said. "It's one of the three, and I don't know which one it is, and that's why I want to know."

Brunn insisted that he wasn't responsible for those injuries.

"What's done is done," he said. "I already went to court. But I don't know how that happened."

At times, he professed to be confused by his actions. He said he didn't know why he singled out Rivera, though he acknowledged watching her at the bus stop and being attracted to Hispanic girls. On the other hand, he sometimes had a clearer recollection, such as his insistence that he didn't have sex with the child, although he said he initially planned to do so.

Interviewing a suspect, or even a convicted killer, can be a mental game, and officers are not sure whether the person is bragging or lying.

"They don't want to tell you, but their ego sometimes overrides that. They want to say something that lets you know they're extremely clever," said Ingram, the retired GBI agent. "They don't want to get themselves in trouble but they want to get credit for what they've done."

Criminals are not normal people and sociopathic in intent. They have and will always exist and they thrive on the most random opportunities. Surgical castration brings up the issue of violence due to inability to perform so the crime may be even more sadistic in nature, but with the right hormone replacement therapy I believe he would make a nice girlfriend for Bubba in prison along with his male castration. There is a war on children and no one seems to care.. yet if it were their child they would be crying to kingdom come. God bless and hope you or your loved ones are never afflicted since that may effect your sensitivities and opinions. Hemotim I agree there seems to be more violence against the weaker. Its kill or be killed mentality with criminality and children and those weaker need to be taught the greatest defenses. They sell personal alarms and once in danger a child could pull the string and those alarms are pretty LOUD. Some self defense common sense, discrimination go a long way in prevention. Yet the best of course is parents watching and that is not always possible since people do run to restrooms and run to do things in seconds and minutes that a snatch or lure could occur. CAMERAS!

Criminals are not normal people and sociopathic in intent............

that is an absurd blanket statement by someone who professes to be 'Justice Sleuth'
your notion of castration isnt to be confused with justice, its vengence..plain and simple

could you lpease explain the psychosis of a young male that steals a condom because he really wants to have sex, but doesnt want to create a baby??

how about the homeless guy that steals a piece of food because he is hungry?? I would argue society is sociopathic to allow people to go hungry

You don't get it. More severe punnishment are not a deterent to criminals. They never thinkthey are going to get caught. That's why the death penalty isn't a deterent. Crimnals do not think like normal people - they believe they are too smart to get caught.
The only way to keep your children safe is to watch them as closely as possible and teach them NEVER to go with a starnger for ANY reason.
Given that kids will always be kids and not listen and criminals will always be criminals and will never believe they can be caught, these incidences will continue to happen.

I have to agree with you. Education is the strongest defense against people like this. Education and constant vigilnace. But even then, bad people will still slip through and bad things will happen.

i have the same sentiment, but those people just dont get it.

crime and justice / law and order ....these are black and white issues ...never any grey (but mostly literal about the black and white thing, as in blacks make up less than 15% of the population but more than 50% of the prison population)

Death penalties have been brought back in many states and countries and act as a deterrent to further crimes as the statistics do show in many cases a drop. I think the silent agenda of a pedo is not easily profiled, unless this individual has a prior under which a background check would suffice. However, what about cases in which the fantasy exists in their minds and opportunity is the only outlet left. Unfortunately, premeditating a crime, baiting and luring, telling a half a story as to not implicate himself as a full offender. He deserves to not be incarcerated but he deserves the same fate as his victim. His act was merciless yet the death penalty would be humane in comparison.

He cannot be recycled back into society for his next opportunity!

This is a sickness it is against the law and our children of mother earth are not here for pornographic enjoyment and our gov needs to stand by that 100%. AMEN.

The death penalty is not a deterent to violent crime. If it were no one would commit a murder in Texas. Iowa would be the murder capital of the Nation (no death penaly), instead Iowa has a lower incidence of violent crime than Nebraka, which has a smaller population and the Death penalty

04:51 PM on 02/14/2012
I would prefer to stay on topic since killers deserve punishments and having a blog disagreement on incidentals isnt going to bring her back nor assure he will never do it again. SO for those who believe as they do let them open their homes as halfway houses to these criminals and trust them in the care of their own families.

sorry, how did the death penalty deter this crime, exactly? oh, right, like torture, it's defenders grossly (and grotesquely) distort and exaggerate its efficacy due to their own sadism. state-sponsored murder is murder, and sets an example that murder is A-OK as long as you are the powerful one committing the murder.

No matter what you do, no matter HOW severe the laws are, there WILL be people like this around. You can not solve everything with law enforcement. You have to WATCH YOUR OWN CHILDREN PERSONALLY - if you don't, then you have no one to blame but yourself.

It is impossible to watch your children 24/7 every minute of the day. Infact that would be unhealthy for both parent and child. Telling the parent of a murderd child that the crime was their fault is beyond crule, it is monsterous.because it diverts blame from the only person responsible - THE MURDERER.
I have no doubt this childs mother and teachers told her about strangers, and not to go anywhere with them. Kids make mistakes in judgement just as adults do. Sometimes those mistakes cost them their lives.
This notion that you pounce on parents who just los a child is repugnant to me.

getting sucked into emotion and thoughts of vengence arent any better either. There are only two of us adults raiseing one child and we NEVER have a problem with at LEAST one of us with eyes on her. NEVER, its NEVER not happened. period!!

i wouldnt wish this upon anyone, but the original poster is correct. no on eis going to care for my child like me, no on eis going to watch out for her like me, NO ONE is going to go to the degree to protect her like me...... so I dont trust anyone but US to be RESPONSIBLE

I think all employers should have background checks done these days on anyone and everyone they employ. I also think that before hiring and during employment, there should be drug tests.
10:25 PM on 02/13/2012
He probably did get a background check and drug test. That seems mostly standard especially working around families in apartment complex with a lot of access. That does not always catch the bad people because they get good at covering it up and not getting caught.

What did drugs have to do with this? How would forcing people to take drug tests prevent child murders?
06:24 PM on 02/13/2012
this is the responislby of the complex to do a back ground check on people that work for them, shame on them, this would not have happened if they had the back ground check, as he would not have the job...shame on them..this is on their minds, hearts and sleepless nights over this, this poor child did not have a chance with this murderer, for sure..

Everyone keeps talking about background checks. GREAT! They have one major flaw however. They...Only...Reveal...Those...With...A...Record. Therefore, no record = no history. End result? The Brunn's.

Nah. Tthey're just up against a wall. They can't account for their actions. So they are then consumed by guilt. They know that you know the law and they know they broke it and they know they'll be punished. As well as never be reaccepted by society. I think some people live by society. The public doesn't care about them and then they do something stupid in revenge.
