'Smash' Reactions: Did The Right Actress Get The Part Of Marilyn? Will She Keep It?

Smash Marilyns

Did you watch Episode 2 of "Smash"? Are you freaking out just a little bit, or do you think the right actress got the part?

[Note: If you haven't watched yet, spoilers ahead!]

Team Ivy and Team Karen fans are likely a little shocked at how everything went down, and how quickly we found out who got the lead in "Marilyn: The Musical." But, according to the show's stars, it may be Ivy's part to lose.

Jack Davenport, who plays "Marilyn" director Derek Wills, laughed about his character bedding his new leading lady: "Well yeah, Mr. and Mrs. Macbeth. [Laughs.] It's a good relationship." And star Megan Hilty admitted that Ivy was using the Marilyn method between the sheets. "She was channeling a little bit. She's one of those actresses -- and I'm kind of this way, though I don't think I'm as crazy about it -- that totally immerses herself in the role."

But just because Ivy is sleeping with the boss doesn't mean it's all rainbows and roses. Plus, Karen is obviously in no way out of the picture. "There are so many other things that we will be competing for," Hilty teased. "And just like it is in reality when you do these big shows, it doesn't matter who gets it initially because things change and people get replaced like that. [Snaps.] And that's just the reality of the business."

Davenport agreed: "I think one of the great strengths of the show is, obviously, the dramatic possibilities, just in terms of good old-fashioned plot twists, are endless. This is a work in progress, and nothing is set in stone. We'll keep you guessing."

Jaime Cepero, who plays Tom's (Christian Borle) assistant Ellis, will have his own scheming ways revealed soon. He's happy the show is highlighting the more cutthroat side of Broadway. "That's kind of how Broadway shows work. You can be cast in the workshop, and then, next thing you know, they've brought somebody else in to play your role," Cepero said. "Then, by the time it gets to Broadway, somebody else is playing the role, or they get a movie star to play the role ... I'm really excited that the show is showing that aspect of Broadway, because I don't think people really understand how tough it is for us to go in there and audition for a role, and then how easily it can be taken away."

Raza Jaffrey, who plays Karen's better half Dev, loves that it wasn't the obvious choice right off the bat. "Like the Uma Thurman character coming in means whoever's got it doesn't necessarily have it for long ... and I'm really glad that they've made it complicated. And I kind of knew they wouldn't just make it the obvious choice -- I knew they'd throw some curveballs," Jaffrey said. "People you meet who've seen the trailer or the pilot, they're all convinced that, of course, it's Karen who's got it. No question! And you're like, 'Well OK, let's see in Episode 2 what you think.' Megan has done such a brilliant job as well of making Ivy such an attractive character in her desperation. As the series goes on, it'd be very easy to kind of caricature that kind of grasping actress, and she really doesn't. You feel for Ivy, and there's pain in there. And you feel for Karen as well."

Team Karen all the way! Just found this extra scene where she's performing Adele's "Rumour Has It"...so amazing! http://www.nbc.com/smash/video/rumor-has-it/1384854

I think that ALL of you are on the wrong track ... I don't believe this show will end up a cliche' ... They both brought different talents to the table ... Karen as young unseasoned Norma Jean ... Ivy as the consummate Marilyn ... Eventually I believe the will SHARE the roll highlighting the evolution from STARLET to SUPER STAR!

Ehh, I am in the middle of the road. I wasn't super happy with the choice of Marilyn, just because I am a Karen fan... I'm warming up to Ivy.
I'm confused by other cast members and such, but it is a new show. We all have to remember that it takes time - I didn't watch the first season of Glee. Took me a while to feel comfortable and such with the cast. This will take time. I think the music is really good. The writing on this episode was alright - I cringed at a few parts, just because it was so cheesy. But hey..we have to give it a fair share of time.

Like Glee love the music and stage productions, but the story is mostly boring, although on Glee they do occasionally deal with real issues.

A terrible terrible episode...horrible writing, baaaaad. The bloom is already off this rose, bummer. Pair this with the new epi of walking dead as two shows that have horribly gone off track.

After watching 2 episodes I can honestly say it's really bad.

The musical numbers are nice to see but the acting is so over done and the dialogue is stupid. McPhee has no stage/screen presence and could use some acting classes and 10 years of experience. The director seducing the starlet is boring and so old. I'm disappointed that this is a Spielberg production and yet it shows like a bad B rated movie.

LOL. Jack Davenport is NOT old! He was born in 1973. He also was one of the leads in the BBC series Coupling. I can assure you that most B'Way directors are MUCH older than Davenport.

If 38-39 is old, I'm totally over the hill at 42. . . Fortunately, I don't feel like it.

Sorry, I meant that the storyline is old. Seen it lots before.

I am totally team Ivy. I have been in theatre a long time and I know how frustrating it is to always be in the ensemble. She has amazing acting chops and it doesn't hurt that she is being portrayed by one of my fave Broadway actresses. I'm trying not to let my personal feelings for the two actresses hinder my judgement but I have found that the more I watch the more my opinions of the characters match those of the actresses. I was upset however that they had Ivy sleep with the director. I totally agree with Todd, he is the scum of the Earth.

It's a very well written and acted televison series and I am very glad
NBC has gone to a scripted show with some flair and depth. Yes, it
is about Broadway - but people, grow up & give it a try - You'll soon
be caught up in the people (characters) and their lives + some very
fine singing from some really strong acting performances. Love the
newbies....Television needed some fresh faces and some "veteran's"
in new roles/portrayals. Like the mix very much.

Ahh, it is a fictional tv show. No really.

While I would love for Karen to get the part eventually, major kudos to the show for keeping it realistic. Ivy would have gotten the part whether or not she had slept with the director because ultimately experience and honed talent will trump raw talent with little experience.

Karen will join the ensemble and get experience under her belt, which she needs. She may eventually outshine Ivy. But giving the part to Karen from the get-go would have been completely unrealistic.

>> Sigh

Let me guess: Ivy will fall down the stairs on opening night and break her leg. It will be up to Karen to save the show.

"Yer goin' out there a green kid ... but you gotta come back a STAR!"

I think I'd rather watch 1933's "42nd Street" next time TCM runs it.

Why are you posting to this thread if the show bothers you so much?
12:05 PM on 02/14/2012
Love, love, love the show. Obviously, the choice of Ivy to play Marilyn is only the beginning of what looks to be a fascinating ride. After all, last night was only Episode Two. We'll just have to watch all of the ups and downs of a Broadway show. If you follow the theatre, you know that changes are made all the time, up to (and sometimes including) opening night!

I like the show. The music and dancing are great, and I am entertained. What I do not likeis the subplot about the adoption. Where the writer does T want to spend time having a baby so she wants to adopt a baby from china. BUT the baby HAS to be a girl. What if the mother from china has a boy, wil she not acept the baby?
11:46 AM on 02/14/2012
I've known a couple of people who have adopted from China, and their story was that most of the kids available for adoption are girls, because evidently there's still a big cultural thing in favor of having a son. Rebeck just doesn't have time to tell us all the details. I didn't think the episode dragged, I thought it went along pretty expeditiously. And to some extent, there IS nothing new under the sun, writers are always dealing with somewhat familiar situations. The trick is to make people like the characters YOU created reacting to those situations. Or at least be interested in them, even if they aren't very likable.

Jaime Cepero's remarks are spot on! My kids work in that world, so this story hits too close to home. I realize the people in charge of these productions are under enormous stress, and feel there is no margin for "error" however the hell they put performers thru during auditions is insane. It is frankly abusive to call people back to read for a role dozens of times, for months on end before making up their silly minds. Actors, singers and dancers shouldn't be kept dangling on hooks while directors dither endlessly. I say for god's sake - make up your mind and move on.

No The right oneee didn't get the part it's the old cleche of sleep with the boss and ytou get the part. I havae a feeling they might get the other girl in the end! Hollywood needs to stop selling us out we have talent besides the punanny...
