Washington Gay Marriage Signing

First Posted: 02/13/2012 5:04 pm Updated: 02/13/2012 5:12 pm

Although it won't take effect until June 7, Washington state's new marriage equality legislation already received heaps of praise from lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) rights advocates nationwide, including Ellen DeGeneres.

"Washington is now the 7th state to legalize gay marriage," tweeted DeGeneres. "Change is a powerful thing."

Take a look at some other inspiring tweets that followed the historic ruling below:

Glad to see another state come into the 21st century. Its a wonderful feeling when you finally get your equal rights. I hope that all LGBT get to know that special feeling.

I'm proud to live in Washington state. Thank you Governor Gregoire!

Small mighty step. Meanwhile we have haters who list "Ellen Degeneres" as a category on a Jeopardy board in a Federal Air Marshal Office in Orlando to ridicule gays and lesbians. How much progress have we made in DC? really?

I think signing the marriage equality bill into law is great. Now let's hope the haters will give it a rest since a duly elected legislature passed it and a duly-elected governor signed it.

They won't. We'll have to vote. And hopefully the entire east side of the state will just stay home and we'll shove the referendum to repeal down their throats.

Fortunately, the majority of Washingtonians are crammed along the much more liberal coast.

We agree, but it's unlikely. There's a lot of hatred out there, particularly on the east side of the Cascades.

Sadly, the one "advocate" we won't hear from is President Obama.

He is at least, not obstructing. My guess is that his evolution will be complete after he wins his second term, in the meantime he has been pretty good on many issues.

Good point. He might come around if his second term is assured, and he's done a lot for gay people anyway.

I'm using his word that he's an advocate..I'm only judging what he's said.
