Whitney Houston's Legacy Is In Bravo's Hands

There is no doubt that Whitney Houston's legacy resides in the music she has left behind. But along with her carefully produced records, concerts and music videos, there exist hours and hours of footage of the singer from her ex-husband's reality show, "Being Bobby Brown."

"These tapes terrify her family and managers," a friend of Whitney's told me. "They want to preserve her image as the greatest singer of our generation, not as the troubled wife of Bobby Brown, who turned her from an icon into a joke."

When Michael Jackson died, the lack of personal footage made it easy for fans and the media to focus on his professional career rather than his decidedly eccentric private life. The same cannot be said for Whitney, but it appears that Bravo, which owns the "Being Bobby Brown" archives, intends to keep them under wraps.

Asked if the network would repurpose any of its footage, a Bravo spokesperson answered with a firm "No." Those close to the singer are hoping that the decision holds, and that the vault of Whitney footage will stay locked.

In raising Whitney, her mom and/ or all of the family members forgot that she was a person first and a singer second. She needed more attention paid to building self-esteem, and her own responsible parenting. It seems like once she was rich and famous, she just stopped trying, stopped caring about her talent, her voice, her image. Her death could have been suicide if she felt the best was behind her.

Personally, I'm a little tired of everyone blaming Bobby Brown for her problems. Whitney was an adult who made her own choices. In Bobby Brown she choose someone to enable her just as every addict chooses either those that enable them or those that will help them to seek treatment.

Certainly he wasn't a good influence but we all choose the people we surround ourselves with.

Not sure why Bravo chose to air it in the first place! Quite frankly, when a celebrity family has some seriously dysfunctional issues such as drug addiction that they are not getting help for, I really can't understand why they would serve up their dirty laundry themselves as public fodder! And the networks shouldn't indulge them either otherwise they become just another enabler!

Her legacy should be the horrible example she set while alive to millions of young girls growing up wanting to be like her. That is what her legacy should be as magnificent as her voice was 20 years ago.
12:53 AM on 02/14/2012
her legacy should be exactly what it is..whitney brown is one of the very best voices and singers of all time...period. you sound like a drug addict. poster and a hateful one at that.

They act like people don't already know that Whitney was a drug addict. IMO, there are two distinct sides to this. Whitney the extraordinary vocalist and Whitney the drug addict. You can celebrate her voice while recognizing that she led a troubled life that led to a troubled ending. I personally don't want to see the videos, but it has nothing to do with me trying preserve the Whitney that existed in the mid 80's and early 90's. That ship has sailed.

It don't think it has so much to do with that. She divorced Brown years ago so one could just as easily make the case that that ship has sailed a while back as well. Yes, her life was a train wreck and I'm sure the first airings of the show were quite an embarrassment to her family, but do we really need the wreckage again??? Isn't her passing enough of a cautionary tale at this point?

I wasn't trying to make a case for them showing it. I'm just saying that Whitney tarnished her image on her own. Even if they did release footage, I don't see it making it any worse than she herself made it.

Yes, an addict is a big part of who she was. When someone has an addiction, it consumes their lives and clouds everything that they do. You can't go around being hooked on the drugs that she was hooked on and also have an entirely clear head.

I agree that she was a legend.

I like Bravo, however if the footage does not stay locked or better yet destroyed, I would boycott the station and their advertisers!
