Bonobo Love: Valentine's Advice From Christopher Ryan

Bonobo Love

Christopher Ryan is one of the freshest voices in the modern scientific movement to decode the mystery of human sexuality. His book, Sex At Dawn, busts many of the myths surrounding human sexual evolution, based upon contextual evidence from our hominid ancestors as well as our living relatives, namely, the great apes.

We've known for some time that bonobos (previously known as "pygmy chimpanzees") are among one of the most sexual of all living animals—besides of course, humans. Frans de Waal dubbed them the "make love, not war" species, since they seem to resolve the majority of conflicts through sexual activity. So, it seemed only natural that I ask Dr. Ryan, preeminent "sexpert," to give us some love advice through the lens of these magnificent creatures. From them, we can learn a thing or two--or seven.

So, without further ado, here are seven things we can learn about love from bonobos, as described by Dr. Christopher Ryan:

1. More sex = less conflict. As the great primatologist, Frans de Waal put it, "Chimps use violence to get sex, while bonobos use sex to avoid violence." While chimps victimize each other in many ways--rape, murder, infanticide, warfare between groups--there's never been a single observed case of any of these forms of aggression among bonobos, who are much sexier than chimps. As James Prescott demonstrated in a meta-analysis of all available anthropological data, the connection between less restrictive sexuality and less conflict generally holds true for human societies as well.

2. Feminism can be very sexy. When females are in charge, everyone lives better (including the males). While male chimps run the show, among bonobos, it's the females who are in charge, with much better quality of life for everyone involved (see #1).

3. Sisterhood is powerful. Although female bonobos are about 20% smaller than males--roughly the same ratio as in chimps and humans--they dominate males by sticking together. If a male gets out of line and harasses a female, ALL the other females will gang up on him. This sisterly solidarity, combined with lots of sex, tends to keep the males behaving politely.

4. Jealousy isn't romantic. While bonobos no-doubt experience unique feelings for one another, they don't seem to worry much about controlling one another's sex lives. Nor do bonobos seem to gossip much...

5. There's promise in promiscuity. All the casual sex among bonobos is arguably a big part of what has made them among the smartest of all primates. Until human beings came along and messed things up for them, bonobos enjoyed very high quality of life, low stress, and plenty of social interaction in hammocks. In fact, of the many species of social primates living in multi-male social groups, not a single species is sexually monogamous. Each of the arguably smartest mammals--humans, chimps, bonobos, and dolphins--is promiscuous.

6. Good sex needn't always include an orgasm, and "casual" doesn't necessarily mean "empty" or "cheap." Most bonobo sexual interactions are nothing more than a quick feel, rub, or intromission--a "bonobo handshake," if you will. (See Vanessa Woods's excellent book by that name for a personal story of living with bonobos while falling in love.) But bonobos are very romantic: like humans, they kiss, hold hands (and feet!), and gaze into one another's eyes while having sex.

7. Sex and food go together better than love and marriage--at least for bonobos. Nothing gets a bonobo orgy started faster than a feast. Give a group of bonobos a bunch of food and they'll all have some quick sex before very politely sharing the food. No need to fight over scraps like a bunch of uncouth chimps!

There seems to be wishful thinking among some that we are some how like bonobos, in that they are peaceful, promiscuous, matriarchal, and egalitarian. When the evidence shows we are likely patriarchal, violent, possessive and jealous, more akin to Gorillas and Common Chimpanzees. Our sexual dimorphism in muscle mass is closer to polygynyous, competitive and possessive Gorillas.

Many behaviors, such as accessing food, and elimination of waste products, we share with many species, including some plants. You clealy have an agenda.

This is an interesting, different perspective on bonobos:

such modern ignorant liberalism. actually encouranging promiscuity lol.. what world does the author live in.. in reality people get pregant and get stds... not to mention, promiscuity devalues the importance of intimacy in forging substantial, profoudn love between two people. sex should never be something taken casually.. why would we take our behavioral ques from a lesser species? total lunacy here.

Yes god forbid people not conform to your rigid sexual standards. Usually the people catching diseases are not using sexual protection. Sex for just sex's safe is FUN. Relationships are great but sometimes one doesn't want to be in one. I doubt she thinks we should also just behave like these apes but neither do we need the Santorum-conservative ideology informing us either. As for seeing them as a lesser species, they seem to get along better than we do.

God forbid people not conform to your animalistic sexual standards where anything goes and we have no true conception of what love is anymore. i agree sex is fun and great, but it is my opinion that modern conceptions of sex run contrary to establishing healthy intimate relationships; it dilutes the notion of real love.

yes god forbid we actually practice self control and self love by not cheapening our love relationships. sex is good, promiscuity is not. and yeah.. they are a lesser species... let me ask you niccolo, do you also play with your own feces, or am i being too rigid in suggesting that we should do what's traditional and flush it down the toilet where it belongs. lol. do you pick your nose still too as the bonobos do? lol. liberals can be so ignorant lol! wake up my friend.

"You did express contempt for their behavior." -- I already explained the purpose of my example. I'm not going to go back and forth and debate with you over what I mean when i already explained it. If you're going to reject my explanations and just put words into my mouth, there's not point in continuing this.

"..doesn't mean nature intended anything." -- Actually, that's exactly what it means. Humans that were promiscuous and lacked self-control often got screwed, dear. That's nature's built in mechanism that reinforces monogamy and the protection of the family.

for some reason you keep wanting to twist it into something i'm demanding of people. i'm not demanding anything lol. i'm explaining my beliefs on the matter. just because we have a sex drive doesn't mean we're to act on it all the time, again.. animals vs humans.

Anyways i'm not going to go back and forth here. We're clearly just from two different worlds. You're of the modern cultral hedonistic trend wherein most people can't even figure out how to be in a successful lasting relationship (go figure). I come from a more traditionalist standpoint. Again, science reinforces my argument that points to some natural connection by continually telling us people are happier, more fufilled, and live longer with monogamy. The proof is in the pudding, sorry. but hey, that's just science right? lol. nice talking with you.

Wondering if women took the hint - be more sexual with your mate - keeps him happy, in line, everyone is better off, less stress and violence and a woman would get absolutely everything her man could give her. Women could run the world, but seem to over look the simple key to it......keeping the grin on the old man's face. And learn something important - to men love and sex are two completely different subjects, nice when paired but not necessarily the same thing for men as it is for women. Men are "wired" different and that is just plain fact, if women accept that and deal with it, they could be taking over the world.....who knows, might be a better place.

I am so sick of this line of thinking, women can be and many are, very sexual. Men can be and many are NOT! And, it is all much more complicated than that. Feelings, attitudes, experiences...

Are female bonobos always pregnant? Just something to think about. Sex has very different outcomes for males and females. As a human female I don't want to have sex constantly and never did.The consequences (pregnancy, disease, and of course attachment and love!!) are too dire for me to have casual sex. I'm middle age now-but I notice that my teenage son and his friends seem to have a LOT more casual sex than my peers when I was 18. None of them seem to think love has anything to do with sex. And to me they have always been inseparable. I'm sure this is do to culture and not genetics.Do bonobos fall in love? Or is that concept only in humans?
05:25 PM on 02/21/2012
I believe bonobos and other chimps nurse their babies for a few years before they get pregnant again. Most mammals don't have sex except when they're in heat - we humans are super-sexual compared to other animals. Bonobo females in zoos have been observed to have sex when they aren't in heat, but scientists who observe them in the wild say they don't have sexual intercourse unless they're in heat outside of zoos.

It's impossible to say if other animals fall in love. We do know that some species of mammals and birds pair-bond. They seem to have some kind of attachment that might be like falling in love, but we don't know how for sure they feel. Probably there is something in the animal kingdom like our experience of falling in love or we wouldn't have been able to evolve it.

Bonobos, however, do not pair bond. I would assume that they and other chimps do not experience falling in love. They probably feel attached to their mothers and mothers probably feel attached to their children. Members of the troop may feel some attachment to each other; they certainly form alliances within their group and stay away from bonobos outside of their group.
