SHOWS CAPPED: China's broadcasters can no longer show any foreign TV series during prime time or let such shows make up more than 25 percent of daily programming.

LEADERSHIP SENSITIVE: China is trying to rein in foreign influence in a year when a change of leadership is planned. President Hu Jintao has said the Communist Party must not let forces abroad westernize and divide the country.

RESPONSE TO PRESSURE: The Party is trying to reinforce socialist principles as people feel increasingly empowered by access to social media and upset over income inequality, corruption and other ills of rapid growth.
