Joe Ramonetha, South Africa Zoo Worker, Killed By Lioness

Posted: 02/14/2012 5:34 am

JOHANNESBURG (AP) — A lioness sprung at the throat of a zoo worker on a rural conservation farm and killed him, apparently because security gates were left open, the Johannesburg Zoo said Tuesday.

Colleagues heard Joe Ramonetha screaming on Monday and rushed to help but it was too late, said zoo spokeswoman Letta Madlala. The 63-year-old was declared dead on arrival at the hospital, she said.

Ramonetha had been feeding the 11-year-old lioness or cleaning out her enclosure on the zoo's conservation farm in Parys, about 75 miles (120 kilometers) from Johannesburg, Madlala said.

Investigators found "It was evident that a terrible accident had occurred — gates were left open — the incident thus occurred due to human error," the zoo's executive manager for education, Louise Gordon, said in a statement later. She said there had not been a fatal animal attack at the zoo in 50 years.

"The staff are trained to close all gates on entering the facility, to let the lions out into the outside camp area, secure the entrances to the night rooms and passage before any work commenced," Gordon said. "Joe was attacked in the staff passage and sustained a fatal bite wound to his throat."

Madlala said Ramonetha had worked for the zoo since 1970 and is survived by his wife and four adult children.

Zoo managers would meet to decide the fate of the lioness called Nyanga, she said.

South Africa has about 2,700 free-ranging lions and 4,000 lions in captivity.

humans need to realise that a wild animal will always have its natural hunting instincts even if it has been staying in a cage or fenced area. I am so sorry for the Ramonetha family for their loss.

Why would any discussion have to take place about the fate of the lion? What, you need to make sure it wasn't premeditated or something? Please. This is sad and tragic, but let's be rational and civilized. A wild animal doesn't need any sort of punishment for following it's instincts.

I visited several game farms in Namibia. I didn't like them at all. The animals were not well taken care of and didn't seem to be fed properly. They basically were fed when there were guests to put on a show.

I don't know if this is the same type of "farm", but this lion was simply being the lion that she is.

My condolences to the family.

A carnivore that would hunt humans in the wild killed a human?

Shocking.

It's always a catch-22 with wild animals, and it's a sin to make a wild animal accountable for behaving like nature designed her when we put her in captivity - a damned-if-you-do, damned-if-you-don't situation for wild animals. There was another incident that was heartbreaking where some teenaged boys (and a twenty-something who should have known better) were allegedgly drunk and teasing a tiger, and to complicate matters further, his or her enclosure wasn't regulation height, and it was a holiday so there was less staff onhand, I believe. One of the teenagers fell into the enclosure and was killed - and ultimately the tiger was destroyed, all, to put it kindly, because of human error. I hope they don't destroy this lioness, and I doubt her handler would have wanted them to.

While I hate wild animals being in captivity I hate more that they are captive their own protection from... of course... us.

What a horrible way to die. Prayers for his family and for the poor lioness whose fate now hangs in the hands of men. Never a good prospect.
