New Jersey Gay Marriage: Voters Favor Referendum According To New Poll

New Jersey Gay Marriage

NEW YORK--A majority of New Jersey voters say same-sex marriage should be decided by popular referendum - something Republican Governor Chris Christie has suggested, but Democratic leaders have pointedly refused to do - a poll released on Tuesday said.

Fifty-four percent of New Jersey voters said same-sex couples should be allowed to wed. By about the same margin, voters also thought the issue should be placed on a ballot, according to a survey by the Eagleton Center for Public Interest Polling at Rutgers University.

New Jersey's Democratic leadership, which controls both houses of the legislature, has made gay marriage a top priority this session, saying the state's civil union law does not adequately protect same-sex couples.

The state Senate approved a bill to authorize same-sex marriage 24 to 16 on Monday, and the measure was expected to be approved by New Jersey's lower house when it votes on the issue on Thursday.

But Christie, one of the country's leading Republicans and a possible vice presidential candidate, has vowed to veto the bill if it comes to his desk. Democrats do not appear to have enough votes to override a veto.

Christie has suggested the bill's supporters put the issue directly to voters, and has even suggested the measure could pass, given the support for same-sex marriage revealed by recent polls.

Christie went on to say that activists in the civil rights era "would have been happy to have a referendum," a statement that angered many. He later apologized.

According to the poll, four in 10 voters agreed with the state's Democratic leadership, which has maintained that civil rights issues should never be put to a popular vote.

"Subjecting the equal rights of same-sex couples to the whims of the majority - and to the multimillion-dollar campaign which will inevitably precede the vote from special interests nationwide, intent on preserving the status quo -- to me, that's offensive and unprecedented," Senate Majority Leader Loretta Weinberg, a Democrat, said on Monday, before casting her vote in favor of the same-sex marriage bill.

Weinberg noted that in 1915, New Jersey voters rejected women's sufferage by a 2-to-1 margin. Five years later, women won the right to vote with the passage of an amendment to the U.S. Constitution that was approved by Congress and ratified by state legislatures.

The survey of 914 adults was conducted from February 9 through February 11, and had a margin of error of plus or minus 3.3 percentage points.

Gay marriage is already allowed in New York, Connecticut, Iowa, Massachusetts, New Hampshire and Vermont plus the District of Columbia. On Monday, Washington state Governor Christine Gregoire signed a bill to make Washington the seventh state to legalize same-sex marriage.

A lawsuit that challenges New Jersey's civil union law is pending.

The only problem with voting on individual rights or the rights of any groups of people is that more people than not vote on feeling, not on the facts and the reality of the consequences that result from that vote. And example would be something I witnessed a few years ago. I had a neighbor that I was friends with and he died. He had a lover and they lived together for a number of years. My neighbor and  Read More...

Yes, and once NJ voters favoured a referendum that ultimately denied women the right to vote. I'm also quite certain that Southern voters would have just loved a referendum that allowed them to keep slavery alive too.

I know two heterosexual men in their 60's who have been best friends all their lives. They share a house (for the last 15years or so, after one was widowed) and have a joint bank account to pay their bills as they both travel often and it makes it convenient. They are basically married as they share resources and property and have mentioned they would get married if they could for legal reasons as they only trust each other to make decisions for them should they become incapacitated, and don't trust their kids to follow their wishes about their property in the case of one of their deaths. No real point to the story, It just seems to me they should be able to get married and share the same priviledges as an other two people. They are not gay and not sleeping with each other so I don't see how even a christian could deny them that.

I wish he could only spend a month as one of us. Let him feel what we have been through all of our lives. What people like him, have made us live, the way we had to.

I hope I live long enough to see the entire country with equal rights. Keep at it people, i'm getting old.

Well in Jersey we voted,
to have a state lottery to fund schools and senior health care,
to have a state sales tax to fund schools and senior health care,
to have a state income tax to fund schools and senior health care,
to have casino gambling in AC to fund schools and senior health care
and they changed the funding formulas.
Votes mean little here.

Too bad he will only eliminate America's nuclear arsenal. The Russians are deploying new delivery systems at a frightening pace, including a missile that can reach the U.S. in 14 minutes. It takes 15 minutes for the codes to be transmitted to our silos after a enemy launch is detected. the only use for such a fast system is to deliver a first strike to knock out all our land based deterrent.

Uhm. The Best system russia has is slightly faster than what we have which is a 30 minute flight time. US Missiles can be fired off in minutes not a quarter hour as well. Not to mention Submarines which can blow the living crap outta russia in retaliation as well as destroy other russian subs in a 1 on 1 or even 2 on 1 scenario. Mean while we have Hyper-sonic cruise missiles, nuclear bunker busters, soon to have rail guns, Laser interception systems, advanced radar, Counter Missile systems... Seriously the cold war is over. Russian Saber rattling is just that. I'd be more worried about the chinese who have a Ballistic Carrier Killer.

Can Mr Whaleass remember when a public vote of whether Italians or Irish (his background) should keep to their own neighborhood in New York would have won? (120 years ago)

It doesn't matter how many people vote against same sex marriage. The Constitution protects the rights of minorities. Even if 99% vote against it, it's wrong to treat anyone like second class citizens.

I want to vote on all new and current marriage. all. straight and gay. i want a law stating that right now all marrid couples must put their info into the computer and we can all look at the photos and read your info and vote. majority rules. if you get 51% or more yes, you can marry or stay married. 51% or more no, you can not marry and if you are married , your marriage is automatically dissolved. and if you refuse to put your info into the comptuer, you are arrested.
