Birthday Cake Oreos Celebrate The Cookie's 100th Year (And Are Tasty!)

First Posted: 02/15/2012 4:10 pm Updated: 03/ 6/2012 11:27 am

Oreo cookies are celebrating their 100th year; the official birthday is March 6, 2012. In honor of the occasion, Nabisco has debuted a limited edition Oreo flavor: Birthday Cake Oreos. The cookies look like standard Oreos, except the white frosting has flecks of rainbow sprinkles inside (think Funfetti).

HuffPost Food was pretty excited about the treat -- after all, only horrible people don't like birthday cake. We were not disappointed. As soon as we opened the package, there was a familiar (and potent) smell that was reminiscent of a supermarket bakery aisle, but in a pleasant, albeit slightly overpowering, way.

The strong vanilla aroma led to a largely favorable taste experience. "It essentially just tastes like someone slathered an Oreo with vanilla frosting out of a can. And I love it," said one fan. Another remarked that although the cookie bordered on the treacly, the birthday cake flavor was "subtle, accurate and pleasurable." This Oreo-animal cookie hybrid prompted one to say that he would choose birthday cake Oreos over regular Oreos "nine times out of 10."

Everyone agreed that the intense sweetness prevented people from eating too many, though that didn't stop several of our dozen or so tasters from requesting a second cookie.

Birthday cake Oreos started rolling out nationally last week, and will likely be on shelves for about six to eight weeks. Two cookies have 140 calories and 6 grams of fat.

Why did the Birthday Cake Oreo disappear from the store shelf? They are delicious now I heard about the candy corn flavored ones. Is it me or does everyone basically gross out over the idea of candy corn oreos?

I adore this topic of Oreos, limited edition Oreos, Hydrox cookies ( better than Oreos in my humble opinion) and just food in general. Food, one of the most glorious pleasures in life, and it doesn't require as much effort as sex.

To me, delectable food while consumed watching your favorite program on a large HD flat screen TV as you nestle into a comfy easy chair is almost heaven on earth. Simple pleasures are the best!

Hydrox were the original chocolate cream-filled cookies; Oreos usurped their position. Your bringing up Hydrox reminds me of one of my simple (and as yet unaccomplished) goals in life: to do a side-by-side taste test of the two. The next time I'm shopping, I must buy both. Thank you for the reminder!

I am sure that all the weight watchers will have somthing to say about the new cookie. I guess eating card board is good for us? NOT Eat what you enjoy as food is great, you don't have to over eat, but enjoy all the good food that are here for us to enjoy and let the weight watchers and doctors eat their cardboard.

Weight Watchers does not advocate eating cardboard but real fruits and vegetables along with some protein and whole grains. If you keep eating lots of white-flour cookies, fries and Wonder Bread, you too will become obese. But an occasional Oreo or two (not the whole package) will not harm your diet too much.

Better get them while you can...before the food police take them away.

Is this the real life, or is this fantasy?

Regular Oreos are only 160 calories per 3 cookies and, so, are a relative health food compared to Birthday Cake Oreos.

Oreos. An American institution.

Anyone notice there's a photo of an African child saying, " A Recipe for Fighotng Child Malnutrition" above an Oreo discussion board! How ironic....or misplaced.

Now did you find that really necessary to bring up on this board. Really!

FYI, whether I did or not, it's STILL right above the postings, so it makes no difference really.

What's your problem? Anything that lithium can't help?

I think a good new Oreos flavor is to offer ones with marshmellow centers instead of creme. The wrapping cna be decorated with campfire scenes & they can call the cookies, " Happy Campers".

OK, reminiscent of bakery frosting right out of the can? I remember bakery frosting actually made by the bakery! Priscilla's Cake Box, where are you? Is your frosting still homemade and tasty as it was in the 60's!

In the 60s our frosting came out of a can. Today it is always homemade and so much better! Yum!
