Bulldog Adopts Boar Piglets In Germany (PHOTOS)

BERLIN (AP) — Forget the three little pigs hiding from the big bad wolf. These six little pigs have found a new friend in a maternal French bulldog named Baby.

The Lehnitz animal sanctuary outside Berlin said Baby took straight to the wild boar piglets when they were brought in Saturday, three days old and shivering from cold.

Sanctuary worker Norbert Damm said Wednesday that, as soon as the furry striped piglets were brought in, Baby ran over and started snuggling them and keeping them warm, even though they're almost her size.

The 8-year-old bulldog has stayed right by their side since then, making sure they're OK, Damm said.

"She thinks they're her own babies," Damm said.

It isn't the first time Baby's taken to new guests at the sanctuary — she's also raised raccoons, cats and many other animals, Damm said.

"She's an uber-mother," he said.

The piglets' own mother was likely killed by a hunter and the litter of three males and three females was found abandoned in a forest.

At the time they were found they weighed in at under a kilogram (two pounds) each but are being bottle-fed at the sanctuary and are growing well, Damm said.

He said they can't be released into the wild because they have no fear of humans, but it should be possible to set them free in a nature reserve in about three months, once they can feed themselves.

Wild boars are common in Germany, even in big cities, and herds have been growing as expanding commercial crops have provided them with more food.

Recent estimates have put the boar population at more than 10,000 in Berlin alone, where they live in extensive wooded areas and often venture into backyards and sports fields, tearing up turf to look for food.

My dog Snooper adapted a piglet and after nursing it for 3 weeks she killed it. It's teeth were much more developed than the puppies. The San Diego Unionput a large picture an the back of the 1st section w/ the caption, "Dalmation finally brings home the bacon."

The video called Bulldog Becomes Mom for Wild Piglets is adorable. Baby the bulldog is so
protective of the wild piglets and the wild piglets are very cute. Good thing the wild piglets were
brought into the sanctuary because without their real mother they would have passed away.

When I was down in Arizona once, some locals told me to watch out for wild pigs/boars out on the desert. "They will charge at you," I was warned, "then when you're down on the ground, they will bite you." Yikes! I was scared. So naturally, with my luck, I came across a pack of them within a few days. It appeared to be a mother-pig with a brood of her little ones. I stood there looking at them, and they stood there looking at me. Then they simply turned and scurried away.

We have serious issues with feral hogs here in Texas. Hm. The piglets are incredibly cute, but I can say for sure that grown feral hogs are vicious creatures. Look at the teeth on that little one that is nipping the dog. Wait until that piglet is grown....yowza.

Still, it is incredibly sweet how the dog has such a maternal instinct.

--- i ---

you had a good idea, here -- i hijack older threads every now and then when the reply buttons vanish ;) i just don't usually do it in politics threads.
that is why i moved it here.
i can stay nicely on topic just by asking you if you think a dingo could win a fight with a javelína
odd you mention chincoteague -- we used to holiday in asseteague (which is considerably closer to d.c. where we lived, but on the maryland side of the same island thing-a-ma-jig)... when we did go south, we went to kitty hawk/cape hatteras north carolina.
i have never fed the gulls anything other than carbs (older bread -- now and again, i will go through the mcdonalds window and get large fries for them -- theyre actually too salty for me so i *dont* eat em, believe it or not, but the gulls looooove the fries). never -- not ever -- did i think to feel them suet or anything that was ever on an animal -- i wanted to ask because you differentiated that they were laughing gulls. (is that something specific to laughing gulls that they like suet?)

my mother in retirement has now begun pottery as a hobby and gets materials from near rockfish (presumable the red clay). like gas-bag said the other day, i too have a mum so old i cannot remember how old she is, but has found a love of pottery.
