Heart Attack Grill Customer Suffers Heart Attack While Dining On 'Triple Bypass Burger'

First Posted: 02/15/2012 1:47 pm Updated: 02/16/2012 10:27 am

According to amateur video and a report from Fox 5 Vegas, a man suffered from a heart attack while dining at Heart Attack Grill in Las Vegas. He was eating a Triple Bypass burger at the time of his cardiac arrest. The unnamed man is reportedly alive and recuperating.

The restaurant's now sadly predictive name was coupled with the even more unfortunate slogan, "Taste Worth Dying For." The incident comes just of one year after the death of the Heart Attack Grill's 575-pound, 29-year-old spokesman.

The Vegas owner of Heart Attack Grill, "Doctor" Jon Basso -- who is not actually a doctor -- first thought the man's cardiac arrest was a joke, but soon phoned 911. Basso told Fox 5, "I actually felt horrible for the gentleman because the tourists were taking photos of him as if it were some type of stunt. Even with our own morbid sense of humor, we would never pull a stunt like that," he said.

Watch Fox 5's full report on the incident, below:

Remember how McDs used to have (perhaps still does) a sign which read: X number of hamburgers sold? The Heart Attack Grill needs a similar sign: X number of Heart Attacks.

Would it be possible to get these people to sign a contract dropping all rights to medicare or emergency room services?

There's a point at which the deliberate cultivation of chronic and expensive disease makes life materially worse for everybody else.

Good point. I think Japan's medical coverage requires participants to have annual physicals. People who fall outside of certain health indicators, such as triglyceride level and waist circumference, have to pay more. If they improve, they pay less. That makes sense to me.

Amazing what quirky selling points actually appeal to people! But then again, Americans aren't exactely adverse to fast food..! There's a lot of bizarre resturants like it around the world that have actually been successful, here's a list of some of them: http://kenwoodtravel.com/blog/?p=4325

It was not the burger itself. Definitely sodas, fries and burger bans.

I just don't get all of the outrage here. As a chain restaurant, Heart Attack Grill is required to post all of the nutritional information regarding their food (they would anyway because they're proud of it). There is no deception here. If people want to buy it, they can. Cigarettes are far worse for you than any fat slathered junk this place serves up, and smoking poisons others while poor eating choices do not. I understand the argument that bad health choices increase costs for others, but I would argue that arbitrary governmental control of our food is a far higher price to pay than increased health costs for fat people (who would be fat whether they ate here or not). Prohibition didn't work too well, did it? I find the free food for 350+ pound people a bit distasteful, but I seriously doubt a lot of 330-340 pound people will try to gain weight for the free food. In the end, this is probably a GREAT deal on fast food, as that 6000 calorie "meal" probably costs far less than 11 times what a 540 calorie big mac does.

I was wrong about the nutritional stats. They don't have enough locations to qualify as a chain. I also think that 6000 calorie meal is probably more like 3-4000, but it is still damn cheap at $12.

My outrage comes from the impact people like that have on the cost of healthcare and health insurance.

They're not just damaging themselves.

Wonder how many victims there would be if they made such a fuss over people having a heart attack at say McDonalds, Burger King, the airport, the gym, etc. Can happen anywhere guys, and does much more frequently than people realize.

Wow! more free advertising for the Heart Attack Grill. It's morbid to say this, but this is the one establishment where such a tragedy is good for business. This and more was mentioned in another news sources (scantily clad nurses waitresses)/ patients/ Doctor. Bonus!

So lets recap the article, shall we? some guy has heart attack blah blah blah... excessive meat, fries, lard, (scantily clad waitresses)... Doctor, patients, melted cheese, pickles ketchup, mayo, fries, coke,(scantily clad waitresses).... wait, what was that first part again? Never mind... where was I, oh yeah... triple meat patties,(scantily clad waitresses). After all only ignorant people will eat a place like this. I hope this place get a badge of honor, you know like the MacDonalds used to get to…“over Million Burgers Served! One Million Heart Attacks Had! – update the number weekly.

Being small I can't get past the first layer of the quadruple bypass burger without being full. Boy would I love to take that home. I could have food for a week.

he probably has a bunch of kids and wife. People are so selfish, it just shocks me sometimes. People should watch Forks over Knives or Fat, Sick, and Nearly Dead and about a dozen more films out there about how dangerous the North American diet is. My natural path has said that the recommended diet for North Americans, being promoted by our institutions and government, will lead to disease, later in life. That's why so many older people suffer from everything from heart disease to arthritis... I think it's criminal because we do have the evidence but the meat producers have too much power and influence to get the truth out. So for now it's up to the individual to educate themselves and to be responsible for their own life.

What's for sure, he can never sue the eating establishment for providing 'dangerous food' without warning to customers...

It is, in many ways, an 'eat at your own risk' place--totally over the top ON PURPOSE, and really not a place anyone who wants to keep healthy should eat in, EVER. Or if the do go there for the gimic--or maybe to share a place of food--they make sure to eat healthy generally, so this is a rare indulging rather than a steady diet (though many of those who visit that place are die-hard--no pun intended--consumers or awful-for-you food).

I'm glad he's alive and recovering.
Am not surprised that someone had a heart-attack there. Probably a lot more are a heart-attack-waiting-to-happen. May it be a cautionary tale.

Well this customer cannot sue because the restaurant WARNED him! Maybe next time he will go to the "fast food" restaurant, "MIXED GREENS".
