Nancy Pelosi Supports Inclusion Of Marriage Equality In 2012 Democratic Party Platform

The Huffington Post   Posted: 02/15/2012 10:15 am

House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) is backing a push by the pro-LGBT rights organization Freedom to Marry to include marriage equality in the 2012 Democratic Party platform, Chris Geidner of Metro Weekly reported on Wednesday.

This week, Freedom to Marry launched the "Democrats: Say I Do" campaign to promote the drive to get Democrats to include a pro-gay marriage segment in their platform, which will officially be ratified at the party's national convention in September. The language reads:

We support the full inclusion of all families in the life of our nation, with equal respect, responsibilities, and protections under the law, including the freedom to marry. Government has no business putting barriers in the path of people seeking to care for their family members, particularly in challenging economic times. We support the Respect for Marriage Act and the overturning of the federal so-called Defense of Marriage Act, and oppose discriminatory constitutional amendments and other attempts to deny the freedom to marry to loving and committed same-sex couples.

"Leader Pelosi supports this language," spokesperson Drew Hammill told Metro Weekly.

Freedom to Marry president Evan Wolfson later told Metro Weekly that he was happy to have Pelosi's backing.

"Freedom to Marry is proud to have Leader Pelosi joining our call to put the Democratic Party squarely on record in support of the freedom to marry as part of the national platform. A wide majority of Democrats and Independents support the freedom to marry, and standing up for all families is not just the right thing to do, it's the right to do politically," he said. "I hope more people will quickly join Leader Pelosi by signing Freedom to Marry's 'Democrats: Say I Do' petition so together we can get the party, and the country, where the majority of Americans already are."

While recent polls have shown a rapid increase in national support for same-sex marriage rights, especially among Democrats, the party's latest platform in 2008 gave rather vague backing on the issue. "We oppose the Defense of Marriage Act and all attempts to use this issue to divide us," it read, without any specific mention of marriage equality.

And the issue of same-sex marriage continues to be a complex one for President Barack Obama. He hasn't come out in support of marriage equality, but the president continues to "evolve" on the issue, as he has been doing since campaigning for 2008 election. He has endorsed the Respect for Marriage Act -- which would repeal DOMA -- and frequently suggests to his gay supporters that there is more work to be done to ensure equal rights.

Earlier this year, Pelosi also urged Obama to clarify his stance and "just say he supports equality in marriage."

To understand Speaker Pelosi (and if Newt the Disgraced can be addressed with that tile, so can Nancy the Wise) you must understand her and her district. She and her husband are self made wealthy people and she raised five kids before ever running for office. In addition, she represents well one of the most diverse districts in all of the United States, a rich district thanks to innovation and hard work  Read More...

Ms. Pelosi normally I find your tenacity a bit overwhelming. For without your attitude the republicans would not have been armed to the hilt before they took the House away from the Democrats. That said, I have to applaud your attempt to push this issue to a greater front. Unfortunately the gay-lesbian community is not united on this very issue. We do not have our own platform. We do not have a leader!! We have small groups of people trying to define our place in American social structure. We are divided by the very things we fight to prevent. Those things are race, age, sex and religious convictions. We all come with our own history and unfortunately we are not educating the young to help them along.
I agree with the movement but it does not go far enough.

The gloom of DOMA ruins thousands upon thousands of families lives by preventing equal benefits to married couples - including immigration benefits. It's about families that are not able to share the same benefits, live together, or enjoy the same freedoms and liberities of Americans.

Unless you experience the discrimation, or lack of equality, then, you could not understand what families are going through. Those that support DOMA are not those "without" - in fact - those folks think life is just peachy, and as long as it's not in my backyard - hmmm...just go on with life. But, for those who are faced with this reality, it's the families that suffer the most.

My apologize Bob. I try to respond as fast as possible to as much nonsense as I can and mistakes are bound to happen. One day I hope to rise to your level of eloquence. I gather it won’t be too hard.

We love you, Nancy!

The story on Prop 8, as I have recently found: the San Francisco archibishop of the cathlolic church had formerly been in Salt Lake, and called in his mormon contacts, who masterminded the entire hateful campaign FROM UTAH

PRESENTLY, THE CATHLOLIC BISHOPS AND MORMON GROUPS ARE DOING EVERYTHING THEY CAN GET AWAY WITH IN EVERY STATE WHERE MARRIAGE EQUALITY IS WANTED, OR IS IN PLACE

NO ONE FRIENDLY TO GAYS SHOULD

A-- speak to any member of these churches without urging them to bring up equality with all their fellow members -- (will work on catholics, but mormons have no shame)

B-- DO NOT PUT MONEY IN THE PLATE
YOU ARE PAYING FOR HATE -- put in a note saying why

Nancy Pelosi is an apostate (if not reprobate) Catholic who should be ex-communicated for this and many equally reprehensible positions she has taken. She is also very old and will soon face an eternity that looks quite dark based on the scriptures that she claims to believe are true!

I see we have a lot of visitors from the 12th Century on this thread. Santorum must not be speaking anywhere tonight. Well, as long as you are here, you might as well be reminded that *nothing* you do or say is going to change the trend toward justice that we are seeing week after week now. Writhe around over that for a while. It's over. You will lose this battle. Or, to put it in technical terms, neener, neener, neener. Now watch out for that dust that the march of history is kicking up; you might ch0ke on it.

Once again, Obama is a giant FAIL on this issue.

Gay marriage is supported by 60% of independent voters.

Legal precedence is on the side of homosexuals, as evidenced by Loving v. Virginia in which Chief Justice Earl Warren wrote for the majority: "The freedom to marry has long been recognized as one of the vital personal rights essential to the orderly pursuit of happiness by free men ...", as well as the Equal Protection & Full Faith & Credit clauses.

Since the mid part of 2011 the majority of Americans support legalizing gay marriage. This means that popular support is now on the side of homosexuals as well.

Since we are in no way a theocracy, the simple fact of the matter is that religion has absolutely no bearing on the issue of whether homosexuals deserve the same rights as everyone else. What people think their religion says about homosexuality carries zero LEGAL WEIGHT in this discussion.

When you take away those three arguments, it's readily apparent that those that oppose gay marriage don't really have anything left with which to mount a logical, reasoned, rational defense against homosexuals being allowed to legally marry.

Does the Catholic church still believe that you can buy your way out of purgatory (wherever that is) by sending money to the Pope (indulgences)?
