Rick Santorum Refused To Disclose Who Paid For Family Trip To Rome

Rick Santorum

Rick Santorum joined a bipartisan chorus this January in criticizing fellow Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney for not releasing his tax returns, but 12 years earlier the former Pennsylvania senator faced similar criticism for refusing to disclose who paid for a family trip to Rome.

In 1999 a Virginia-based nonprofit called the Common Good Foundation paid for Santorum and his wife, Karen, to spend six days in Rome, according to an article in The Philadelphia Inquirier on June 23, 2000.

Santorum followed Senate protocol and filed paperwork showing that the organization, whose website says it is "a movement of faithful Christians dedicated to building a culture of life, family, freedom and solidarity," had paid for his trip.

The controversy started because Congress' rules also require its members to disclose if a donor also pays for his or her family to take a vacation.

Initially, Santorum didn't disclose who paid for his wife and children to make the trip across the Atlantic with him.

Santorum defended witholding the information, saying that because of an exception to the disclosure rule, a spouse who travels for his or her own reasons doesn't need to disclose who footed the bill.

Santorum's spokesman at the time, Robert Traynham, told the Inquirer that the senator's wife traveled to Rome to promote her book Letters to Gabriel.

"Mrs. Santorum is an accomplished author in her own right and was invited under her own merits and based on her credentials," Traynham said. "The children were traveling under her invitation."

The Center for Public Integrity continued to pressure Santorum.

"We need to know the relationships between him and the people who are paying for it," said its managing director Peter Eisner at the time. "Making a legalistic argument that there are exemptions and other such things, and making partial disclosures gives the appearance of trying to hide something."

The senator's campaign eventually revealed that the Common Good Foundation had paid for Mrs. Santorum's trip. It released a statement from the foundation's founder, Keith A. Fournier, to Karen Santorum asserting that "your recent book and long labor in the pro-family movement is a vital part of our decision to sponsor your trip."

Who paid for the children's trips still remains a mystery. Their expenses were underwritten by "private individuals" whom Santorum refused to identify.

Traynham, in an interview with The Philadelphia Inquirer, offered another reason why the people who paid for the children's trip should not be named: "The four kids are off-limits, and I don't think that's really necessary to go into the travel arrangements of four small children."

Since calling on Romney to release his tax returns, Santorum has promised to release his own, yet he still has not done so.

Rick Santorum picked up bragging rights and nine more delegates with a win in Louisiana, but still lags far behind Mitt Romney.

The Red, White & Blue Fund, which supports him, has laid out a memo showing how he still hopes to take the nomination.

Santorum's next important battlegrounds come in Wisconsin and his home state of Pennsylvania.

I have a hard time understanding why anyone who has the means to pay their own way takes money from and outside source. It just doesn't make sense to me and it makes Santorum and others beholden to those who fund these trips.

I had to follow the money to Keith A. Fournier or Deacon Keith Fournier as he styles himself. He writes for Catholic Online which is reviewed here unfavorably. http://www.catholicculture.org/culture/reviews/view.cfm?recnum=64 "There have been over $200,000 worth of judgments and liens filled against Michael Galloway, the owner of Catholic Online, for unlawful, unfair and fraudulent business acts and practices."

He has been described as a right-wing Catholic activist when the Huffington Post ran a piece by Michael Keegan, the President of the People for the American Way, entitled "Rick Santorum: The Hapless Holy Warrior Starts Another Crusade."

Fournier supported Glen Beck's Rally to "Restore Honor" and wrote 500,000 attended when the science based estimate was 87,000. Fournier is a right-wing Catholic activist who supports Santorum. Fournier's Common Good Foundation website http://www.commongoodonline.com/foundation.php has links to questionable sites and promotes tearing down the walls separating of church and state. The site is not very transparent. Fournier has been a long time supporter of Santorum and far right religious policy which runs counter to Catholic Social Teachings.

Santorum's friend Fournier has the same extreme positions promoted by Rick so I understand why Rick doesn't want to discuss their financial relationship.

Obama/Biden 2012 is the only answer to this hate and propaganda.

Too bad Santorum wasn't around during the time of the Great Crusades.

Santorum likes to suggest that it wrong to take bribes through soft back channels, but that has not stopped him from taking them whenever then are offered. He thinks that he is above the law, but wants other people to be held to a higher standard. Absolutely typical politician.

Santorum really should just go to work for the vatican. His whole political philosophy is based on the teachings of the his catholic cult. He should not be in politics. His ideas are just too dangerous and threaten the personal freedoms of the citizens of this country. I felt so much relief when the voters of the great state of Pennsylvania threw him out of office. Santorum obviously has a lot of sexual hangups due to his catholic upbringing. I will be much relieved when his political career is officially ended sometime soon.

It's easier to get into the Vatican if you bring children.

Santoum has a serious problem with following the laws that he wants everyone else to follow. He should be removing the log from his own eye before he worries about the splinter in others' .

As I was saying before my computer went crazy......A day without learning is a day wasted. I really didn't want to learn this but now that I have may I say that this man is just another leach and freeloader. What a father figure!. Romney and Santorum two of a kind. Can you imagine what this country would be like with them as President and Vice President after Obama degraded our country. I can't wait to hear if Ginrich did any of these things, so far all I know is he was a womanizer which seems to be popular among many men including past presidents. I'm sure we'll hear more. Considering what we have in office now I guess Santorum and Romney are a close runner up, more of the same garbage. This is why other nations see us a weak and a third world country, we haven't the respect that we once had and if we keep electing this same kind of politician we never will have respect or trust.

so where are all the links to similar Obama trespasses?

You know, if you don't want to hear about Santorum;s, Gingrich's and Romney's faults, you can mentally vacation at the Fox Channel and Redstate. It's like wearing blinders and noise-cancelling headphone... where seldom is heard, a discouraging word... and the clouds are not cloudy all day.

Devon dear, I didn't say I didn't want to live in a vacuum. I just wanted them to live what they were saying. We all need someone to believe in. It's just not them. Maybe someday. That also is the problem today. Peope hide and don't want to discover the truth about things. I don't hide, I study people.

The pope won't live long enough to hear all of his sins. If he'd gone for confession 12 years ago, he'd still be there.
