Rick Santorum Tax Returns: Republican Candidate Releases Four Years' Worth Of Documents

Rick Santorum Tax Returns

STEPHEN BRAUN   02/15/12 10:00 PM ET  AP

WASHINGTON — Republican presidential candidate Rick Santorum released four years of federal income tax returns on Wednesday night, showing a sharp rise in his personal wealth spurred by his growing work as Washington-based corporate consultant and media commentator.

Santorum's returns show that his federal income taxes rose from 2007, when he paid $167,000, to $310,000 in 2009, then dropped to $263,000 in 2010. During that same period, his annual income surged from nearly $660,000 in 2007 to $1.1 million in 2009 before slipping to $923,000 in 2010.

Santorum, 53, has sold himself in the Republican primaries as both a Washington outsider and a social conservative, stressing his family's coal-mining background and his appeal to religious and working-class voters. His personal finances tell a different story, detailing the trajectory of a politician who grew more prosperous in the Senate and became a millionaire afterwards, at times capitalizing on his Beltway connections.

His 2010 tax returns show he made more than $550,000 in media and consulting fees – paid to him through a corporation he set up, Excelsior LLC. The previous year, Santorum made more than $820,000 in fees, also paid through the same firm.

Santorum's wealth doesn't come close to the multimillion-dollar fortune amassed by Mitt Romney's high-finance prowess or Newt Gingrich's smaller but still-lucrative blend of foundation and consulting work. But his newfound affluence reflects his close ties to Washington's business and lobbying circles during his 12 years in the Senate and his smooth transition into their world after he left office.

Both Romney and Gingrich recently disclosed income tax returns.

Last year, the former Pennsylvania senator disclosed investment and real estate assets totaling as much as $2.5 million. In his presidential financial disclosure spanning 18 months between 2010 and 2011, Santorum also listed $1.3 million in income as a consultant – much of it coming from media appearances and corporate work on behalf of health care, energy and social conservative interests.

Rising to GOP leadership in the Senate as Republican Conference chairman, Santorum pushed to expand the influence of Republican-leaning business interests. As conference chairman, he headed GOP Senate communications efforts and met regularly with GOP-leaning business and lobbying figures. He raised more than $550,000 from lobbyists during his unsuccessful 2006 Senate re-election campaign.

After his Senate defeat, Santorum did not register as a lobbyist, but he aided corporate and other interests as a consultant. He was paid $142,500 by Consol Energy, a Pennsylvania-based energy firm with numerous Appalachian coal mines. The firm has lobbied against Obama administration efforts to tighten limits on greenhouse gas emissions.

Santorum also was paid $65,000 by the American Continental Group, a D.C. lobbying firm with an assortment of corporate clients, and $125,000 by the Clapham Group, a Virginia firm that aids religious rights organizations. He benefitted from media work, paid $230,000 for appearances on Fox News, as well as more than $80,000 for stints as a radio commentator.

Santorum was also paid nearly $400,000 in compensation and stock options as a board director at Universal Health Services, a hospital management firm, after he left the Senate in 2006. He also owns up to $250,000 in Universal stock. As a senator, Santorum had sponsored several unsuccessful bills that would have secured more Medicaid funding hospitals run by Universal and other medical firms in Puerto Rico.

Santorum also owns five rental properties in State College, Pa., worth $500,000 and $1.25 million, but also with as much as $750,000 in mortgage debt, according to his presidential disclosure. His taxes show that he took mortgage and depreciation deductions on those properties, and also that he sold more than $23,000 worth of stocks in 2010.

Santorum and his wife, Karen, took standard deductions each year for their seven children, the returns show. In 2007, the Santorums took a $4,000 charity deduction for giving away "clothing, footwear, accessories and household items." That year, the family moved into a larger home in the Virginia suburbs of Washington.

Santorum and his family now live in a four-bedroom northern Virginia house on five acres assessed at $1.4 million in 2010.

The tax returns were first made available Wednesday night by Politico.

"Well, I do my own taxes and they're on my computer and I'm not home," he said during a Jan. 19 presidential debate in South Carolina. "Until I get home, I won't get them. When I get home, you'll get my taxes."

I am curious as to why it took him so long to report his taxes.

Santorum is sexually sick.If he wins the nomination ,he will lose bigger then any candidate has ever lost.He needs a rectangular couch ,not an oval office.

So if someone condemns a murder it's because they envy their ability to kill people?

If they condemn a thief it's because they envy their ability to steal?

If they condemn a domestic abuser it's because they envy their ability to beat their wife?

That make as much sense as assuming someone condemning the corrupt and greedy envies them for their ability to get rich.

That's why it's called class envy, unless you prefer the term poverty pimping, as in redistributing poverty. That way we can look like all those third world countries.

What he says: I'm a Washington outsider with a firm belief in buying American!

What his taxes say: I'm a big sell-out lobbyist who drives an AUDI.

One thing, though, I believe that you inadvertently added an "n" to the last word of your first sentence in error.

Prior to being elected President the highest annual salary earned by Bill Clinton was $36,000 as Gvernor of Arkansas........Billy has come a lonnnnnnnnnnnnnnng way. Barak sure made it big from being a humble community organizer..............Kennedys made their money bootlegging booze and working with organized crime.....John Kerry made it big marrying the widow of a Republican Senator......and then in order to save some taxes he registered his yacht in Rhode Island to avoid the tax in a state he represents........All in all at least Romney earned his money...keep in mind he did not legislate the tax rates in effect he just pays whats due and gives an equal amount back to charity

No. And when an advocate from a non-profit company seeking AIDS relief for poor children in Africa approaches a congressman, he is not sell-out.

All of us are human and all have failed somewhere, some way.I myself would like to find a morrally upright, called to politics, hard working, honest person with the interest in the people and the same values as mine. I know that will never happen. I in no way would want to be put under that kind of a microscope... So I look for a person who closest resembles that and realize they are all human, all have egos and agendas. I pray and know that whomever is chosen, God does the choossing for reasons of his own.
I hope all of you will do the same. Look for the candidate with the most integrity, and the highest morals, who will work for the people, and hope God blesses whomever we put forth...

Idealistic but you share my view too. I actually chose Rick Santorum for that reason. He seems to be the candidate that has the most integrity (who is Pro-life as I am) but he's far from the perfect candidate and I disagree on some of what he says. But I liked the Hope in your post! I voted for Jimmy Carter the first time I voted because I thought he had integrity. It means a lot to actually trust your politician/leader.

Maybe the moral of the story is none of the Republcan Candidates need to be be in Congress to suceed? They can do well on their own? Unlike Pelosi, Reid, Fienstein, Murtha, etc,.... Wow! and they paid their taxes and donate to Charitable Organizations! I really do not care for Romney; however, he paid 15% tax and gave at least another 15% to Charity - That equals at least 30% voluntarily. Compare that to Sharpton, Buffet, Biden,Gitner etc,.... who harp we need to pay more in taxes while they are the poster boys for trying to get out of paying, or donate pennies compare to what the rest of the populaion on average does. Being and independent, I put both sides on the scale with the issue at hand. I know they are politicians at the end of the day, but this makes their side look like choir boys when the two sides are compared.

Actually, am way to the right of the repubs and pulled my associations with them back in the mid 90's.- when it really dawned on me we've been had, The country club republicans are the off spring of Teddy Roosevelt Progressives - I know a few Democrats who call themselves Progressives, they are not; they are Communist. Teddy Roosevelt Progressive are more in line with a view of Government that I have heard from Alexander Hamilton's opinions (basically facsism), and to a degree Jefferson's when he adoped more a line of the Jesse's view from the French Revolution. Both Republican and Democrat Parties have had us on path away from the Constitution, and on a path financially that history has proven time and time again is not sustainable; worse, warned against by the framers of the very document they both disrespect and by oath are to uphold. I am a child of God first and politically consider myself in the Conservative camp. While you may conclude I am more Republican in political identity, I have concluded the Republican Heirachy truly does not identify with me. In my humble view this country has not been a Representative Republic since 1913 when the 17th Amendment became Law. Hope that proves a little more data for you to form an accurate opinion based on your values. I am more than happy to give you an unvarnished view.

No matter what, every one of the candidates is trying to sell their brand of goods to us, the American public.

What Santorum makes in a year is literally pocket change for the Mittster. And none of them, and I mean NONE of them gives a damn about you and I and how we are coping with the economy today.

Sorry folks, I am out of sympathy for these people.

How about you?

Any one do a check on how much Clinton, Jesse Jackson or even Al the looser Sharpton get for speaking fees. It is not unusual for X's and is not tax payer money except for when a school in Pennsylvania paid Jesse Jackson for speaking. The man has no church, no job and many affairs. Go figure

That's all part of the public record.

What is also part of the public record is how he mis-used his PAC and his FOUNDATION money to help pay for his family and personal expenses. Just google those accounts with his name. It is very enlightening.

He's a HUGE phoney...isn't he? While you are at it look at his real estate deal involving his home in Great Falls VA.
