Texas Christian University Drug Case: Students Arrested On Felony Charges

Texas Christian University Drugs

After a six-month police investigation, seventeen current students and two former students at Texas Christian University were arrested on drug charges today.

Fort Worth and TCU Police, (some working undercover as clients), caught the students involved in "hand-to-hand" drug exchanges. The students sold marijuana and various forms of ecstasy, as well as prescription drugs such as Xanax, hydrocodone and Oxycontin, USA Today reports.

“There’s no doubt all arrested today are drug dealers,” TCU Police Chief Steven McGee said in a press conference held this morning.

The investigations arose after parents, students and other TCU community members complained to administrators about the rising use of drugs among students in the past several years.

Notably, four football players were arrested, three of which -- defenders Tanner Brock, D.J. Yendrey and Devin Johnson -- were prospective key figures in the upcoming season,TCU's first in the Big 12 Conference. Offensive lineman Ty Horn was also arrested. According to Brock's affidavit, undercover officers purchased marijuana from him at various locations near the TCU campus, including a Kroger parking lot and his personal residence. The arrest documents also note that Head Football Coach Gary Patterson administered a drug test to team members on Feb. 1. The university has not yet released the results of the test.

"I don't think it's a football problem," said University Chancellor Victor Boschini of the players' involvement in the drug deals.

However, in a statement to the media, TCU Director of Intercollegiate Athletics Chris Del Conte said, "Student-athletes are a microcosm of society and unfortunately that means some of our players reflect a culture that glorifies drugs and drug use. That mindset is not reflected by TCU nor will it be allowed within athletics."

The Star Telegram noted that TCU was the only top-25 football team in 2010 with no criminal records among players, a statistic praised in a Sports Illustrated article.

Obviously the only reason this article is popular is because students are charged with drugs at a Christian school. People get charged with drugs many times at my college, but it I never read about it in any other paper than the school's newspaper. Though I do understand that a Christian school holds more interests about students being drug charged than any other public school. But, look at the facts. According to the article TCU was rewarded with no drug charges among football players in 2010, and assuming 2011 as well. Therefore, this article doesn't show that Christians are hypocrites, but we Christians are humans too. We make mistakes. In fact, for most of us, it was because of our mistakes that we sought faith. So lets hope these students learn from their mistakes and not repeat their mistakes.

Tragic that some do not realize the long term consequences of behavior while in their university years. Self medicating with substances other than what their doctor prescribes is incredibly iresponsible with them not having a clue of just what is in the chemicals they are puting in their bodies to effect their brains.
Incredible lack of blindness and unawareness.

Then kindly stop persecuting people for using drugs that are probably far safer than all that booze in your cabinet!

God apparently made marijuana, and it IS safe, safer than water. Yes, more people die from drinking too much water than marijuana intoxication. But if Jesus turned water into MDMA, I'm not too up on that - "Anything is possible" LOL

Drugs destroy lives and in some cases kill people. Those who wish to legalize or otherwise sanction drug use should live in the shoes of people who have suffered as addicts or ended up dead, in prison or homeless because of drugs. You should talk to husbands and wives of drug users, talk to their children and see how happy the children are. You should be forced to live in drug-blighted neighborhoods where gangs or murderers rule the streets driven by drug profits. to even think about legalizing drugs is to cave in as a society to the worst kind of evil and open ourslves to a whole new era of serious and expensive problems. These college students were afforded a chance to better themselves, instead they chose the low road. Let them now learn what it costs to break the law.

You may be right about the chemical drugs but there has never been one single documented death related to marijuana use.

So in order to protect drug users from harming themselves, we should throw them in prison and do more damage than the drugs themselves could ever do?

In general, drug reformers are not naive idealists; they've seen what drugs can do but they've also seen the havoc repressive measures wreak. It sounds like you're not nearly as well-versed in the effects of Prohibition as even the dopiest drug reformer is on the pitfalls of drug use.

People are self medicating all over the world because they do not like who they are and what life has brought them. People are in the pain of having terrible lives and go to jail for wanting to get away for just awhile, while your waiting to die. Just my opinion

I certainly hope students quit this university en masse; no administration that willingly becomes complicit in the persecution of its drug-using students deserves a cent of tuition.

Concerning the war on drugs, the problem is not the drugs... the problem is anti-social behavior.

No, our society is falling apart because of the War on drug-users.

Drug use in the US is a large factor but not the only factor of the society falling apart.

How much work is lost each year due to addicts.

How many people are killed because of drug use through accidents, and dealing.

How much money is wasted on having drug addicts be hind bars.

How meny children do not get educated because of drugs.

How meny drug addict lie, steal and hurt people because they will not stop taking drugs.

Illegal drugs are not needed it only hurts our society.

Are you blind you don't see that a lot of crime is related to drugs?
