'Top Gear' Premiere: Truck Full Of Fireworks Catches Fire (VIDEO)

First Posted: 02/15/2012 7:53 am Updated: 02/15/2012 9:52 am

Season 2 of "Top Gear" (Tue., 9 p.m. EST on History) premiered on Valentine's Day and host Rutledge Wood had an explosive time while driving a big rig full of fireworks.

Given that the truck also contained several burning barbecues, viewers should not, perhaps, have been surprised when it caught on fire.

As smoke billowed from the back of the truck, Rutledge asked incredulously, "I'm on fire?" and then pulled over to check the situation.

When he opened the door, all hell broke loose. It was like July The Fourth as the fireworks exploded out of the back of the truck. And then set the nearby cornfield on fire.

Armed only with teeny tiny fire extinguishers, the "Top Gear" gang weren't up to the task of putting out the blaze, so the local firefighters had to do it for them.

Watch more testosterone-fuelled mayhem on "Top Gear," Tuesdays at 9 p.m. EST on History. To see how Jeremy Clarkson and the British petrol-heads do "Top Gear" head over to BBC America (check listings).

If anyone remembers 1997's Tomorrow Never Dies, there was a shot in the motorcycle chase scene that looks almost exactly like this. Man, that was a cool shot.

Epic fail. The British version is much, much better. Us "Gearheads" know that!

I was skeptical when I heard that there was an American Top Gear show. I have only caught short glimpses of the program and wasn't impressed. When I read the headline of this article I was convinced that the program is for a different audience than myself. I don't even want to waste the energy to try to find out why a tractor trailer was carrying fireworks and barbecue grills.

There is a proliferation recently of these types of "train wreck" reality programs because they take no real creative writing and film production talents and are cheap to make. Sadly the viewing public seems to get excited about almost anything that plays on recklassly stupid behavior. As far as I'm concerned Top Gear can't get it out of low gear.

This was SO set up. Right down to the timing of him CLOSING the door and the firetruck showing up. I'm hoping some fines were handed down. I'm sure the guy who owns the field that they screwed up would LOVE something more than what THEY paid him.

All history channel shows are stage, pre-rehearsed and fake, PAWN STARS, AMERICAN PICKERS, TOP GEAR, CAJUN PAWN, SWAMP PEOPLE, RESTORATION, ARE ALL SCRIPTED AND REHEARSED SHOWS.

The items brought in on Pawn Stars aren't staged, but they do tell things to the customers of what is going to happen on the show. As far as being completely scripted and rehearsed (Pawn Stars only) I'm not quite certain about that.

How about the tow truck shows thats the phoniest. The british top gear is great the american version cannot be watched for over 3 minutes before changing channels.

I'm glad to see it's ok to launch fire works out of the back of a semi in certain parts of the country. I'm thinking this year I'll purchase an El Camino and load it up with cakes and mortars and take it on the highway at about 100mph. When I'm pulled over by the cops or overrun the spike strips I haven't decided how I want it to end I'll just blame it on that terrible show which is nowhere near as entertaining at the real Top Gear on BBC...
