Whitney Houston New Jersey Tribute: Gov Christie Strongly Defends Lowering Flags For Singer

NEWARK, N.J. — Gov. Chris Christie on Wednesday strongly defended his decision to have flags lowered to half-staff on Saturday for Whitney Houston, saying he rejects criticism that she "forfeited the good things that she did" because of her struggles with substance abuse.

"What I would say to everybody is there but for the grace of God go I," he said.

The Republican governor said his office has been receiving emails and other messages disparaging Houston and attacking his decision to have flags flown at half-staff at state government buildings Saturday, the day of her funeral in the Newark church where she sang in the choir as a child.

Twitter was abuzz Wednesday with reaction to the decision by Christie, whose home is in Mendham, a wealthy town where Houston also had lived.

In online postings, there were two main arguments against the honor for the "I Will Always Love You" singer, who died over the weekend in California at age 48: One was that it should be reserved for members of the military, first responders and elected officials. The other was that it's wrong to honor a drug addict.

Heather Clause, a Richmond, Va.-based blogger who writes about teen moms and was tweeting critical comments, said in a telephone interview that she was appalled by the planned flag-lowering.

"It's just such a bad example for people," she said.

Clause, 23, said the decision was like saying if someone sings well, drug use doesn't matter and "you can still be an idol."

Rebecca Eppelmann, a newspaper copy editor in upstate New York, also tweeted her disgust at the Houston honor, then discussed her views.

"It should be for major events," she said. "It's horrible that she passed away. It's not something that should warrant this."

The governor said he was not saying that Houston, who was born in Newark and was raised in nearby East Orange, is a role model. Instead, he said, Houston deserves the honor because of her huge cultural impact and as "a daughter of New Jersey."

"I am disturbed by people who believe that because her ultimate demise – and we don't know what is the cause of her death yet – but because of her history of substance abuse that somehow she's forfeited the good things that she did in her life," said the governor during a briefing in northern New Jersey. "I just reject that on a human level."

The cause of Houston's death at a Beverly Hills hotel has not been determined, and the results of toxicology tests are pending. Investigators found several bottles of prescription medication in the hotel room where she died Saturday, but authorities said they weren't an unusually large number.

Christie said some people were being critical "without the facts," accusing him of treating Houston better than fallen soldiers.

The governor noted he has ordered flags flown at half-staff for all 31 fallen New Jersey soldiers and every fallen police officer during his time in office.

He also ordered flags lowered last year for Clarence Clemons, the saxophonist for Bruce Springsteen's E Street Band.

In Newark, residents were irritated to hear of criticism of the governor's decision to honor Houston, who acknowledged her drug abuse in interviews.

Resident Anna Simpson was out Wednesday at New Hope Baptist Church, where Houston's funeral will be held, to pay her respects on her way home from her airport job.

"She never forgot where she came from," Simpson said. "She was real. We would see her and be like, `She's one of ours,' and she always made us proud, no matter what happened."

After Houston became famous she continued to make regular trips to the public school she attended in East Orange and to which her family has directed donations be sent in lieu of flowers.

Simpson said she admires Christie for honoring Houston because "if it were Bruce Springsteen or Jon Bon Jovi, nobody would bat an eye."

"I don't agree with a lot of things that he does, but I admire him for that," she said. "Whoever don't agree, they will get over it."

No disrespect too Miss Houston, but according to Federal Guidelines on the Flag { half-mast } the Gov. is wrong!

Every celebrity out there donates money. Nice and generous of them, they can afford it. To fly a flag at half staff for Whitney Houston is just ridiculous. She was a very talented singer, many years ago, and it is sad she died young, but quite frankly, it was more than likely self-induced. Is this who I want my kids to look up to? I think not! As usual, Christie does what Christie wants.

I'm really sick of this. With all of this carrying on you'd think the pope died or something of that magnitude.

You finally have an honest Governor and stands by his beliefs. Count yourselves fortunate.

At first I thought it was wrong to honor Whitney in this manner, until I looked into her contributions. Here are a few justifications why I think it is appropriate for governor to honor Whitney Houston: 1) donated all proceeds from the single and home video sales of her Super Bowl XXV rendition of “The Star Spangled Banner” to the American Red Cross to benefit Gulf War troops and their families; 2) Re-released “The Star Spangled Banner” charity single to benefit the New York Firefighters Disaster Relief Fund and the New York Fraternal Order of Police Fund following the terrorist attacks on 9/11, and waived her royalty rights to the single; 3) contributions to The Children’s Defense Fund, The National Birth Defects Center, UMDNJ University Hospital, Rainbow House, and many more; 4) donated 1 million rubles to Russian Aid Fund for victims of a bomb attack in the Moscow subway; 5) and, donated to help with the fight against aids and cancer are just a few example of her charitable contributions. For those whom what to judge Whitney Houston, at least try to get an accurate picture of who she was.

As much as I like whitney's musical ability, I do think it is wrong to honor Whitney with the flags flting at half staff. Her life went from glitter to a cautionary tale about drug abuse.

Save the flags flying low for returning fallen servicemen from overseas.

Doing this for Whitney sends the wrong message to all......

Whitney donated millions in proceeds to Gulf War Vets, alone. (How much did you give?) Please do some research before you give your 2cents.

I stand by my original point. She may have given money to charity (good for her), but would you tell your children to look up to her as a role model? Methinks not.

Gov. Christie, You see here how hateful the fundamentalist religious right to whom you are pandering on the marriage equality issue are. Are you still going to continue pandering to them as you see the hate they express on your Whitney Houston homage? Please stop pandering to haters and jump on the correct side of history on marriage equality. And please keep the flag at half mast out of respect to Whitney Houston's memory. She was a beautiful people with a great voice and wonderful talent in her prime. It is sad that her gifts did not make her happier, but the condemnations of the fundamentalist right is just another expression of their hatred.

There are rules and guidelines concerning the US Flag. They are enumerated here:

Meaning no disrespect to Ms. Houston, this is clearly inappropriate.

She donated money from singing the Star Spangled Banner to the families of Gulf War Vets. That amounts to millions she could have kept, but instead used it to help the wounded. (How much have you given, lately). She is a genuine American hero. Unfortunately, most white Americans don't perceive anyone being "heroic" unless they too, are white.

I love Whitney Houston music. She is one of my favorite female singers, however I don't want my children or grandchildren to look up to her. She made many tragic dicisions in life and I don't understand Gov. Christie thinking she was an icon we should honor. He would have had my vote in the next election but just lost it.

She was on drugs, had a tragic life style, made tragic dicisions and if Gov Christie thinks this is what an icon should be, then he had my vote but just lost it. Joanne

To me this is a slap in the face to every family that has had their kid come home from war in a box and a cheap trick by Christie to stay in the news and maybe try to pull some of the black vote away from the Democrats.

How in the WORLD does this take anything away from a veteran??? Every fallen soldier has had the flag flown at half staff. What a swing. During Viet Nam, the poor conscripted soldiers got no respect. Now, we're supposed to believe every soldier's virtue is unquestionable. Do you think every poor soldier who came back in a box was an exemplary human being? Of course not. Should that mean they don't get the flag flown at half staff? Of course not. They gave the last full measure of devotion. Maybe I wouldn't have made the choice to honor Houston in this way but I do know that many people from New Jersey loved her. Her life must be looked at in aggregate.

Governor Christie - rather than a dead drug addict honored by flying the flag at half-mast how about these warriors that sacrificed their lives in Iraq and Afghanistan?

Whitney gave away the millions of dollars of royalties to help the wounded veterans returning from Iraq. She could have kept this money, but instead heroically used it to help. Yeah, she had problems with substance abuse, as did many of the men who returned from the war. She fought her own, internal war. But she did, what she could. Too bad haters like you can only complain (By the way, how much have you done lately, for the families of wounded veterans. Or are you just a big mouth breathing complainer?)
