Electronic Cigarette Explodes In Man's Mouth, Burns His Face

By MELISSA NELSON   02/15/12 06:40 PM ET  AP

PENSACOLA, Fla. -- A Florida man trying to kick the smoking habit was puffing on an electronic cigarette when a faulty battery caused it to explode in his mouth, taking out some of his front teeth and a chunk of his tongue and severely burning his face, fire officials said Wednesday.

"The best analogy is like it was trying to hold a bottle rocket in your mouth when it went off," said Joseph Parker, division chief for the North Bay Fire Department. "The battery flew out of the tube and set the closet on fire."

Fire Chief Joseph Miller said the victim contacted the department on Wednesday to thank firefighters and told them he was recovering at a hospital in Mobile, Ala., and anticipated being released later in the day. Officials have not publicly identified him, citing department policy. But a Facebook page under the name of 57-year-old Tom Holloway of Niceville was filled with well-wishers commenting on the injury and database searches matched his address on the fire report with his name.

Holloway was in his office at home when the device exploded, leaving behind burned carpet, chair cushions, pictures and office equipment. A scorched battery case found on a piece of melted carpet appears to be one for a cigar-sized device, the report said. Those in the house with him rushed to his aid in the smoke-filled room and tried to put the fire out with salt, the report said.

Holloway and his family members didn't immediately answer The Associated Press' requests for interviews.

Investigators do not know the brand of cigarette, type of battery or age of the device, Parker said. It appears the battery was rechargeable lithium because a recharging station and other batteries were in the room, he said. Parker has forwarded information about the blaze to the fire marshal's office to include in any databases on the devices. But Parker said he has yet to hear of any similar instances.

Holloway agreed to let firefighters take the burned case and other, undamaged ones with them as examples for reporting to a national database, according to the report. But Holloway has asked for the burned case back. Parker said it could be used as evidence in any litigation, although Holloway did not indicate why he wanted it returned, Parker said.

Thomas Kiklas, co-founder of the Tobacco Vapor Electronic Cigarette Association, said the industry knows of no problems with the cigarettes or batteries exploding.

Kicklas said the rigid, plastic cigarettes include a small battery and cartridge. The battery is designed to generate an electric charge when the device is inhaled. The charge sets off vapor in the cigarette tube. The nicotine-filled mist gives the taste and experience of smoking without the smoke.

Kiklas cited a federal report that found 2.5 million Americans used electronic cigarettes last year.

"There have been billions and billions of puffs on the cigarettes and we have not heard of this happening before," he said.

Fire officials said the victim told them that he was trying to stop smoking, which is why he was puffing on the electronic version. However, the industry does not claim electronic cigarettes allow smokers to kick the habit, just that they are a healthier alternative to traditional cigarettes because they have fewer chemicals, Kiklas said.

The Food and Drug Administration posted a warning about the cigarettes on its website in October saying that e-cigarettes were addictive, could contain dangerous chemicals like nicotine and might encourage kids to try other tobacco products.

In 2010, the agency sent letters to some e-cigarette makers for violations of the Federal Food, Drug and Cosmetic Act including "violations of good manufacturing practices, making unsubstantiated drug claims and using the devices as delivery mechanisms for active pharmaceutical ingredients," according to the FDA website.

Holloway is a photographer, motorcycle enthusiast and Vietnam-era veteran, according to his Facebook page.

bet he was trying to light up. they always say smoking is bad for your health, but this takes it to another level. Probably will not be that any positive posts on this one just mucky takes and bad jokes at his expense. to be a pariah of the smoking fraternity does not get much sympathy in this day and age.

As the smoker didn't remember the brand, I guess it was some garbage. I think it's vital to do some research on the web before buying an e cig. You can start on this site for example: http://www.electroniccigarettereviewsite.net/

This is so unfortunate and so sad. This man is in my thoughts, and I hope that he makes a quick recovery.

I agree with Wing OfEagle, this was not an e-cigarette failure, but a lithium battery malfunction. E cigarettes are by no means without any health risk, but they certainly are a much better alternative to regular cigarettes. And e-cigarettes can help you quit smoking. Smoking is an addiction that is both chemical and physical: a chemical addiction to nicotine and a physical addiction to the act of lighting up. E-cigarettes contain nicotine, which by itself, is not considered seriously harmful. And of course, electronic cigarettes mimic the action of lighting up.

Has anyone had success with using electronic cigarettes to quit smoking?

One of my good friends had tried everything to quit smoking: nicotine patches, gum, hypnotism, you name it. He swears by e-cigarettes and gives them complete credit for him being able to quit. Today he is tobacco-free, as well as a brand evangelist for KingPin- www.kingpincigs.com

More misinformation. He was most likely using a home-made mod and cheap batteries. The chemicals inside e juice are not unsafe. Can people please do their research before posting their utter, ignorant drivel here? I feel for the guy and I hope he makes a speedy recovery. This is a terrible, freak accident and doesn't instantly make E-Cigarettes or Personal Vaporisers instantly unsafe. All batteries have a certain level of instability. The level of hysteria I have read about this sad story is ridiculous. People who use P.V.'s all use them at their own risk. People who use mods are even more aware that there may be unforeseen risks, especially with unprotected or cheap batteries. A terrible event like this does not instantly bring the safety of all P.V's into doubt. To all the people who ignorantly bleat on about how "unsafe" vaporising is, do your research. Hundreds of thousands of people worldwide use them successfully and are gaining immeasurable benefits to their health from quitting cigarettes. One freak accident doesn't instantly make all of them wrong.

If people looked at the chemicals inside electronic cigarettes, they would go back to regular cigarettes.

Please don't mislead people that tobacco is better, given there are about 4000 chemical compounds in tobacco smoke, and about 10 ingredients in e-cigarette vapor.

This will happen a whole lot more as cheaper Chinese models flood the market. China doesn't adhere to the USA's laws on anything. Remember a few years back when Easter candy & baby formula was recalled due to Chinese manufacturers boosting them with powdered melamine? Their electronics are not tested by UL & things will only get worse... Want to stop smoking? Go cold turkey or use the gums or lozenges. I don't trust the patches nor Chantix which has a crappy rate & way too many side effects including death. There are also many different avenues, even the big tobacco companies offer help to quit. Here's hoping this poor guy is able to get his face back to normal & uses this most horrific example of negative conditioning to quit for good.

If you did some research, you would realise that most people buy brands that are made to the strictest standards. It has been around for a good few years now. Do you really think that exploding e-cigarettes would have not been reported on before? This is the only, ever, report of something like this happening in the entire history of vaping. If you choose to look, there is plenty of information on the internet regarding the FACTS about vaping.

This was most likely a mod. Probably constructed by someone who didn't really know what they were doing. Perhaps even by the victim himself. I agree that it's a terrible thing to have happened, both to the poor guy, but also for those of us (and there are hundreds of thousands) who have had not one single issue even close to this during our time using personal vaporisers. Nobody mentions the lives that are being saved due to the use of these products.

Want to stop smoking? Try anything that helps. Including E-Cigarettes - They have worked for hundreds of thousands of people worldwide and more smokers are turning to them daily to help them quit.

Why would you trust a big tobacco company to help you quit? That makes no sense whatsoever and makes your post seem idiotic in the extreme, even if at first you do raise some genuinely good points about the manufacture of these products.

The fact is, if this were a true story, and any of the news "reporters" did ANY investigating, they would have been even partially specific about what had happened. OK, if this person did get hurt by an e-cigarette, was it a store bought or online, or was it a modified version that he or a friend made? Was it protected batteries (as insisted upon by all e-cig users, or a walmart non-protected cell?
Seeing how this has been exploited, it certainly appears to be a witch hunt story by big tobacco that is being effected by the revolution rising against them.

I truly hope that IF there actually was someone hurt by a battery explosion, they are ok. But, the fact that this is pretty much the first story like this in the 5 years that e-cigarettes have been in the USA is not being talked about. Are we going to ban water, vehicles, alcohol, flying in a plane, walking across the street, living at all? All of these have a high mortality rate, but someone has an accident and it is tied to an electronic cigarette? It's all about the money! Vapers (users of electronic cigarettes) are doing something for a positive, don't make it out to be something it isn't!
Get some good information at www.casaa.org and then report!

This is not an e-cig failure, but rather a Lithium-Ion cell failure.

There is a proper way to use/charge/maintain Li-ion, and it requires use of a digital multimeter.

I'm guessing the burn victim had no knowledge of these procedures.

I managed to keep smoking and having the pleasure of inhaling by using E-cigarrets for the last 4 months and I was a 20 units/Day smoker. But what I really find strange, very strange indeed, is that the victim, who had awaken and reported recovering, could not remember the brand he was smoking. I could never forget the brand of Ecigarret that so gloriously altered my health, specially now that Im almost on the zero nicotine charges

Perhaps because this whole story has been blown up (no pun intended) and distorted beyond recognition by the media.
03:15 PM on 02/16/2012
OMG! The headline made me think it short circuited or sparked, not a full-on explosion! This makes me concerned about other devices that use batteries near the face (razors, trimmers).

How do they know he didn't try to light it? Fire has an explosive effect on lithium batteries which is why there are warning lables on them. I guess there is no way to prove that he did or didn't try to light it as the result was it started on fire and exploded. They will just have to put idiot stickers on each one reading, "DANGER, MAY EXPLODE IF EXPOSED TO FIRE".

The reason why he didn't try and light it, if you read the report is that he'd been an ex-smoker of over 2 years. Now why would an ex-smoker try and light an e-cigarette?

Sigh.

smokers are scamps now you know there is no free lunch.

What? Because of an isolated, freak accident? I don't see every single e-cigarette in use in the entire world exploding like this one did? This is the ONLY ever reported incident of it's type.

I'd better not go swimming, I might get eaten by a shark.
