Jimmy John's E. Coli: Sandwich Chain's Clover Sprouts Sicken People In 5 States

By MARY CLARE JALONICK   02/15/12 09:09 PM ET  AP

WASHINGTON -- Raw sprouts from the sandwich chain Jimmy John's have been linked to an outbreak of foodborne illness – again.

The federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said Wednesday that 12 cases of E. coli poisoning in five states are linked to raw clover sprouts eaten at Jimmy John's restaurants. The outbreak comes a year after raw alfalfa sprouts from one of the chain's suppliers were linked to 140 salmonella illnesses. Sprouts from the chain's suppliers were also linked to a 2009 salmonella outbreak in several Midwestern states and were suspected in an E. coli outbreak in Boulder, Colo. in 2008.

Illinois-based Jimmy John's declined to comment on the outbreak. After the salmonella outbreak a year ago, the company said it would switch from using alfalfa sprouts to using clover sprouts because they are easier to clean. But federal regulators warn against eating all raw sprouts, which are one of the most frequent perpetrators of foodborne illness.

Though they are often touted as a health food, sprouts need warm and humid conditions to grow, encouraging bacterial growth. Many restaurants have stopped serving them after multiple outbreaks, and the government recommends that the very young, elderly, pregnant and others with compromised immune systems stay away from raw sprouts completely. Fully cooked sprouts are safe to eat.

According to the CDC, there have been at least 30 outbreaks associated with raw or lightly cooked sprouts in the United States in the last 15 years and even more around the world, including a 1996 outbreak in Japan that sickened thousands of people with E. coli. Fenugreek sprout seeds from Egypt are thought to have caused a major outbreak of E. coli poisoning in Europe last year that killed more than 50 people.

Illnesses in the current outbreak were reported in Iowa, Missouri, Kansas, Arkansas and Wisconsin. The illnesses occurred between Dec. 25 and Jan. 15 and two of the victims were hospitalized.

In most sprout outbreaks the restaurant is not to blame for the contamination itself. Contamination usually happens when the seeds are grown or harvested and is often impossible to wash off.

Food safety lawyer Bill Marler has represented victims in the three previous sprout outbreaks potentially linked to Jimmy John's. He has pushed the FDA to require warning labels on sprouts and praises restaurants that have taken them off the menu.

"You have to wonder what this company is thinking," he said.

The best alternative for the nutritional qualities people eat sprouts for is wheatgrass...HOWEVER....sprouts on whole grain or Ezikiel bread, with a good tomato, some cucumber, and organic homade olive oil mayo is a LOT better tasting.....a LOT!!!!!!!

To Dr. Max;
You appear to be TERRIBLY uneducated about irradiated foods, especially meats and vegetables.

GMO foods bring us unprecendented and stronger strains of e Coli. We should get away from genetically modified, synthetically fortified, degerminated, irradiated, and microwaved food, and go with more organic, live, slow cooked foods if we want to see a reversal in America's continued slide down chronic illness and disease.
06:24 PM on 02/19/2012
That is so untrue, without GMO foods the cost of feeding the world would be so high that starvation would be a whole lot greater than it is today. Do some studying about GMOs.

This kind of short-sightedness and narrow perspective has begun to create an enormous problem with GMOs, which will only get worse.

The Studies are conclusive...GMO's cause liver failure in mice, Europe is in the process of outlawing them, and the current liver epidemic in Nicaragua may and I repeat may be linked to GMO's.....

How much study do you need, or do you work for Monsanto?

They are now engineering insecticides in some GMO's where if an insect eats it, it kills that insect...

And they think that comes without risk to humans.....

E-coli is rising in meat throughout the USA, not just at Jimmy Johns. Many new strains of bacteria are being made stronger due to poor sanitation and over-use of antibiotics in the animals from which the meat comes. All commercial meat should be cooked well done now, and the same cutting board used for meat should never be used for vegetables, at home or commercially. Microwaving of food, especially meat, is unhealthy, and should be stopped. There is so much on this, I don't know where to begin, but for now we need to reverse several health practices, including microwaving, genetically modified food, irradiation, degermination, and synthetic fortification and get back to a more organic, live food diet. Otherwise, every category of chronic disease will continue to skyrocket in the nation!

Watch "Food Inc" to see what Monsanto is trying to do to the industry...It is the best informational movie about the subject and it is not a gore / shock type of show...just the facts.

I thought this E. Coli was found in this restaurant's sprouts, not their meat.

I like jimmy johns I think their subs are awsome. But after seeing their problems with ecoli incidents makes me want to stay clear from them. They better turn around their storage and cleaning of food products... Do we need to get Chef Gordon to show them how to keep fresh healthy food in their stores. :)

The story indicates the problem is not usually caused by restaurants, just don't order sprouts! They are notorious for causing ecoli. Anybody eating sprouts could contract ecoli.

Every time one of these things happens, people like you want to blame the restuarant. As if they grew the sprouts out back.
