Nick Cannon's Health: 'America's Got Talent' Host Was Hospitalized For Blood Clots In His Lungs, Reports Say

Nick Cannon Blood Clot

UPDATED 2/17: Nick Cannon released a statement today on the 92.3 NOW morning show website, saying that he is stepping down from his "Rollin" radio show in order to rest his body.

He said in the statement:

Under doctor's orders, I have been asked to put my health first and cut back on some of my professional commitments in order to allow my body to get the rest that it needs to keep up with the demands of my multi-tasking schedule.

Apparently, Nick Cannon's health problems didn't end after he was hospitalized last month for kidney problems.

The New York Daily News reported that Cannon, 31, said on his 92.3 NOW radio show that he went to the hospital last Friday because of blood clots in his lungs and an enlarged heart ventricle. While his kidneys are reportedly doing fine, Cannon said that having to fly a lot because of his job were a huge factor in the blood clots in his lungs. Cannon was back at work today, Wednesday.

"I travel a lot. Anyone who flies a lot can be a victim to getting blood clots because it can start in your legs or your lower back (from sitting for an extended period of time)," the New York Daily News reported Cannon saying. "That, on top of my previous condition made me more prone to (getting blood clots)."

Cannon's doctor said that Cannon's overworking himself was likely a big factor in his poor health recently, the New York Daily News reported.

Cannon was hospitalized just last month with what his wife Mariah Carey described as a "mild kidney failure." Doctors say she probably meant that Cannon had something called acute kidney injury, or acute kidney failure, which is when the kidneys stop functioning properly and allow fluids, waste and electrolytes to store up in the body, according to the Mayo Clinic.

Cannon's recent blood clots are nothing to scoff at, though. Forty-four-year-old rapper Heavy D died late last year from a pulmonary embolism, which is the term for a blockage in the arteries of the lungs, which was likely spurred by a long flight the music artist had just taken from London to Los Angeles. (Heavy D, whose real name is Dwight Arrington Myers, reportedly also had heart disease that may have factored into his death, TMZ reported.)

Being immobile for long periods of time is a known risk factor for deep vein thrombosis, the term for a blood clot in the deep veins (most commonly in the legs). The clot can break off and travel to the lungs, causing pulmonary embolism, according to the Mayo Clinic.

Symptoms of a pulmonary embolism include being short of breath, having trouble breathing, coughing (or coughing up blood), chest pain and even irregular heartbeat, according to the National Heart Lung and Blood Institute. Signs of deep vein thrombosis include leg swelling, leg pain or tenderness, warmth in the affected leg and discolored skin.

Recently, guidelines released from the doctor group American College of Chest Physicians shows that blood clots from traveling -- coined "economy class syndrome" -- are actually not more common when you fly economy class. The real risk is run when people don't get up and move around on a long flight, particularly those lasting more than five to eight hours, the Associated Press reported.

The creators of the guidelines found that sitting by the window could play a role in the blood clots because people in those seats may not get up as often, according to the Associated Press.

As long as his kidney problems really were acute, that part of the equation should be OK.

If I have to be in a plane for more than 6 hours, I book it as two flights and have a 24 hour stopover in the middle of the route. Also good for jet lag. Better to spend more on the flight than on a hospital stay.

Glad to hear that Nick Cannon is putting his health first. He surely has everything to live for, with a beautiful wife and family. He's fortunate that money is not a problem for him. He's a great host on America's Got Talent. Get well soon!!!

Contract those calves, even from a sitting position, if you are unable to get up and walk. Push down with the toes.

Have done a lot of flights to Europe and the east coast from LA. Always get up and walk around as much as possible. I've had flights as long as 15 hours, and I'd go nuts just vegging out watching movies the whole time. That said, Cannon is smart to drop out and get a handle on his health. A lot of things are going wrong, and he needs to pay attention to that before it's too late.

I fly a lot , and have had surgery to my leg. I was given thrombosa shots to prevent blood clots from forming in my legs etc. from my doctor that I can inject myself into my stomach and do that before any long flights. It is a small needle with the dose premeasured inside. My doctors are from Germany. I am American who worked overseas for years and have never heard anyone mention that here. It's preventitive along with moving during a flight.

Man I love Nick Canno and I would be devastated if anything happened to him. This should serve as a wakeup call for everyone of us on this panel. Call your doctors today and get checked for blood clots. You dont have to be old to die from them. Many young people are dying for no reason. Clots if detected early can be taken care of with blood thinners and natural foods like garlic, CONCORD only grape juice and other natural foods. If you have a family with a history of heart disease, blood pressure, kidney problems, POOR CIRCULATION, severe headaches, PLEASE GET CHECKED. Im going to set up an appt. with my doctor to get tested for clots. If we can't get the clots removed then heart surgery, brain surgery, will not help. They continue to grow from one to several clots if not checked. Remember that the veins in our legs connect directly to our lungs and heart. dont play and get checked today...God Bless you all.

If you're suggesting that everyone should, regardless of lack of symptoms, get checked for blood clots, well that would just be a huge waste of everyone's time and money.
None of the conditions you listed, especially not a family hx, with the exception of certain forms of kidney disease (nephrotic syndromes) would lead to an increased enough risk where routine screening would actually provide any benefit at all.

Unfortunately, this condition, despite multiple recent notable deaths and many not so notable deaths, is not getting the national attention it deserves. The notable deaths have been numerous however. Amber Davis, a plus sized model died at age 36 following a routine knee surgery. David Bloom, the reporter and Heavy D, the rapper. Despite these deaths, still not major news. What about those who almost died of Pulmonary Embolisms following DVTs, (deep vein thrombosis), or blood clots in the legs, such as tennis great Serena Williams, Music Mogal and husband of Tamar Braxton, Vincent Herbert, who was on life support, and blessed to pull thru, or Nick Cannon, featured in this article. The not so notable deaths, but oh so personal for me and my family were my god-sister at age 40, my mother in law, at risk because she had cancer, and numerous others.

I remember the shock when David Bloom, the NBC correspondent died of a pulmonary embolism,
while embedded in Iraq.

He had been on a long flight, then jammed into a small space with the troops, for an extended period of time. Terribly sad. A young guy, married with 3 little ones
