Scott Walker Recall: Emily's List Endorses Kathleen Falk For Governor

Scott Walker Recall Kathleen Falk

First Posted: 02/15/2012 7:12 pm Updated: 02/17/2012 1:29 pm

A national group dedicated to electing pro-choice Democratic women has weighed in on the contest to recall Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker (R), where the Democratic field remains unsettled.

Emily's List announced Thursday that they will back former Dane County Executive Kathleen Falk for the Democratic nod to oppose Walker in the recall election later this year. One of two women running for governor, Falk is currently considered the frontrunner in the Democratic contest, though one possible heavyweight Democratic contender remains undecided about a bid. Today's endorsement could sway funds and support to bolster Falk's candidacy.

"The people of Wisconsin are fed up with Republican Gov. Scott Walker's anti-worker, anti-family policies. The harmful, right-wing agenda being forced on Wisconsin by Scott Walker and his big-money corporate allies has fired up working families across the country who are demanding change. The answer is the experienced leadership of Kathleen Falk," Emily's List President Stephanie Schriock said in a statement.

Falk, the first candidate to enter the recall election, is currently running against state Sen. Kathleen Vinehout for the Democratic nomination. An Emily's List spokeswoman said the decision to back Falk was made shortly after she entered the contest -- and before Vinehout made a decision to run -- based on what the group considers Falk's strong credentials and the need for a quick decision on backing a candidate in Wisconsin.

Milwaukee Mayor Tom Barrett (D), who lost to Walker in the 2010 governor's race, remains undecided on whether to seek a rematch. A source confirmed that Barrett is seriously considering entering the contest, where he'd be viewed as a frontrunner, but is not expected to make a final decision until after the April mayoral election, where he is seeking another term. Barrett is expected to easily win reelection as mayor, but Walker defeated him in the 2010 race by a 6-percent margin.

Retiring Sen. Herb Kohl (D-Wis.) and former Sen. Russ Feingold (D-Wis.) have both declined to enter the race to oppose Walker.

Falk unsuccessfully ran for governor in 2002 and state attorney general in 2006, but is now expected to see an influx of money for her race endorsement, and Emily's List plans to actively fundraise for her. She is currently the only gubernatorial candidate the women's group has backed for the 2012 election season.

A spokeswoman for Emily's List declined to say if the group would run third party advertisements on Falk's behalf, citing federal law barring coordination between the group and the political action committee which would run any spots. A political action committee affiliated with Emily's List has previously run ads on behalf of candidates supported by the group. Emily's List did weigh in on last year's state Senate recalls in Wisconsin, backing five Democratic women seeking seats. The group is also backing U.S. Rep. Tammy Baldwin (D) in her race for a U.S. Senate seat from Wisconsin.

The Wisconsin Government Accountability Board has not made a final decision on whether a recall will proceed against Walker. The agency is still reviewing the more than one million signatures submitted on recall petitions. The recall also seeks to oust Lt. Gov. Rebecca Kleefisch (R) and four Republican state senators. Recall efforts began after protests over Walker's collective bargaining ban and budget cuts last year.

Correction: An earlier version of this story stated that state Sen. Tim Cullen was running for the Democratic nomination for governor. Cullen has dropped his candidacy.

Time to vote women into office. The Republican men are attacking women and their access to health care. They want to turn the clock back 100 years. We have to get this extremists out of office.

The huge mistake would be for Falk and Vinehout to inject destructive information that the Republicans can use against them .

Positive self promotions are the way to go . The Republicans would not dare get in to a positive self promotion campaign . If it doesn't have destructiveness built in it they haven't "they can't handle it" .

Is this the same "Emiley's List" that rates businesses for consumers that are checking out the reputableness of such businesses? If it is they ought to stay with what works for them and not the latter.

You are confusing Emily's list with Angie's list. Angie takes comments from consumers about businesses.

Falk raised taxes every year for 10 years in Madison.
She has lied describing Walker as never discussing ending collective bargaining before being elected. An August, 2010 Journal Sentinel Article clearly describes Walker’s intentions.
Falk would restore what she calls workers rights…what she means is workers entitlements at the expense of taxpayers and the ability of communities to determine the pay and benefits of the employees.
She will raise taxes on taxpayers, she will raise the corporate tax rate and scare off any companies that were planning to build in Wisconsin.
Since she is bought and paid for by the unions and has admitted it through acceptance of their money in return for overturning ACT 10, she is a criminal and will be criminally charged if she somehow gets elected….It’s called play for pay and it is illegal!.
Corporations in Wisconsin will go from 96% looking favorable in our direction under Walker back down to 10% prior to Walker coming into office. The revenue machine…which DOES NOT INCLUDE PUBLIC UNION employees will be destroyed.
She increased the Dane county budget by 60% during her 14 years by raising taxes nearly 10 of those years.
She increased the tax levy on property taxes 11.6% in her last two years.

If the voters in Wisconsin want a tax and spend person….then vote for Falk. If they want responsible legislation, pro-business leadership, real worker rights protected, smaller government, and living within our means- budgets then vote for Walker.

a newpaper did an analysis of a large sample of sigs
they used a far more stringent test than the election board
mis-spelling of street names, unverifiable addresses, PO boxes, etc.
no duplicate names or phoney names found, all that were tossed were real people, just forgot to date, etc.

15% bad
the real number using the boards test less than 5%
even if we use 25%

We have seen the actual challenges from the recallable state senators like Fitzgerald. His tea leaf staff apparently can't read, with challenges filed because post cards were returned undeliverable.

Maybe someone should explain to his assistants that it is usually necessary to include at least a hint of the name of a city. That information is, of course, perfectly clear on the original form. Another example is a "Christopher" (only name given) at xxx 'North University Avenue Beaver Dam, WI 53916' This was returned marked "Unsure which Christopher." That is, in fact, a dorm for Wayland Academy, and has more than several Christopher X's as well as a few X Christophers.

Another was an obviously husband and wife who signed, one above the other. (#3059). The returned postcard was sent to 102380 AGHUGO LN and came back no such street. Admittedly the guy's handwriting is not fabulous, but even I could make out "Wxxxx Cty Hwy W." The wife's line had beautiful handwriting. Another returned card had the address: "Wxxx Eipong Terrace" when the signature form clearly says "Wxxxx Lake George Terrace."

This is a recall, not a penmanship exam, but these Republiclowns are falsely trying to drag it out.

I have as much faith in the partisan views of "madison.com" as you likely do in the McIver Institute or Media Trackers, which have also performed an analysis. The fact that the GAB won't consider them proves nothing, as Kevin Kennedy gave the go ahead for people to sign as often as they like and have admitted that they won't apply any reasonable standard in reviewing signatures.

Eido has replied he doesn't like this. I notice he did not look at these himself as I did, and did not even look up the PDF of his hero's complaints. Had he done so, he could have seen what I was talking about. The news story made a fair point, regardless of its source: what right do they have to strike the names of legitimate petition signers because of their own incompetence?

You'll have to do better. This whole thing is about fairness, and getting a government that represents all of the people, not just some radical clique of zanies, no matter what political stripe they might follow.

I note, for example, that President Obama had no problem with Scott Walker, even with all the crap Walker has said about Obama.

Only disappointment today is that two different judges recused themselves on the case against Walker's aide who embezzled from veterans, so the arraignment didn't proceed today.

Both judges had dealing with Snotty and his minions earlier, and not pleasant ones. Likely they are being careful not to taint the case, which smells an awful lot like this is getting deeper very quickly. If it stopped with some random aide, there would be no reason for either judge to pull out. But if the judges had prior poor dealings with Walker personally, they would certainly recuse themselves if he is directly involved. They have read the evidence, and we have not, but it says a lot about what is going on under the surface.

Recall that this aide is the one that set up the secret email system.

If he is not arrested first. Looks like it is going badly for him. Sadly, if he is indicted before the recall election, I believe his lieutenant Governor (who is also being recalled) will replace him.

Query what this will do to the recall....
07:10 PM on 02/16/2012
Good point. Although I would love to see him impeached or arrested, the thought of Kleefisch (Kleefish, Crayfish - sp?) being in the office of Governor for even a brief time is really frightening. Almost like electing a table or dog or clock to be governor...

I wish the left would stop with their lies about Walker affecting worker's rights. It is plain nonsense!
Worker's rights have been restored and considering that only 14% of workers in this state are part of a union, the vast majority of workers are behind the end of collectively bargaining for a small group of people that felt they were entitled to over compensation and very early retirement packages.

Falk has illegally accepted pay from unions to legislate according to their needs. It is against the law.
Falk raised taxes every year for 10 years in Madison even during 2008-2009 when the economy was a disaster. She doesn't know how to balance budgets and she certainly doesn't know how to solve deficit issues.
The bullying recallers and their divisive tactics are also supported by Falk...where's the compassion and respect for those in the majority that support Walker?
What a pathetic candidate.

You call us "bullying recallers," accuse us of "divisive tactics" and "lies," call Ms. Falk "pathetic," and then wonder why you don't get "compassion and respect?"

BTW, if only 14% of workers in this state are union, why are there so many signatures for the recall of 6 government officials? Hmmmm. Maybe nonunion folks want them out, too. Like me, for example.

Of the 14% (not my figures) the rest are teachers . They make up around 300,000 followers of the Public sector Unions. Not to mention their relatives etc. It will be interesting to see how they vote after being Free from the Unions ability to tell them how to vote and noting that they still have jobs unlike many in the private sector. Did I mention that my Real EstateTaxes went down? Or that I'm a retired teacher.
