Weekly Jobless Claims Fall To Four-Year Low

Weekly Jobless Claims

CHRISTOPHER S. RUGABER   02/16/12 09:35 AM ET  AP

WASHINGTON — The number of people seeking unemployment benefits fell to the lowest point in almost four years last week, the latest signal that the job market is steadily improving.

Weekly applications for unemployment benefits dropped 13,000 to a seasonally adjusted 348,000, the Labor Department said Thursday. It was the fourth drop in five weeks and the fewest number of claims since March 2008 – six months before Lehman Brothers collapsed and only a few months into the Great Recession.

The four-week average, which smooths out fluctuations in the weekly data, fell for the fifth straight week to 365,250. The average has fallen nearly 13 percent in the past year.

The consistent decline indicates that companies are laying off fewer workers, and hiring is likely picking up further. When applications drop consistently below 375,000, it usually signals that hiring is strong enough to lower the unemployment rate.

Jeremy Lawson, a senior economist at BNP Paribas, said the report points to solid hiring this month, similar to the average net gain of about 200,000 in the past three months.

"Most indicators are pointing in the same direction: a healthy job market," Lawson said. The additional jobs will provide more income for consumers and support greater spending, an importance source of growth.

In January, the economy added a net 243,000 jobs, the most in nine months. And the unemployment rate dropped for the fifth straight month, to 8.3 percent. The economy has added an average of 201,000 jobs per month for the past three months.

Faster economic growth is spurring the additional hiring. The economy expanded at an annual rate of 2.8 percent in the final three months of last year – a full percentage point higher than in the previous quarter.

Most economists expect growth to slow in the current quarter, because companies won't need to rebuild their stockpiles of goods as much as they did last winter.

But there are signs that the economy is still expanding at a healthy rate. Factory output got off to a robust start this year, and it ended 2011 with the fastest growth in five years, the Federal Reserve said Wednesday.

Factories are adding jobs to keep up with higher demand. Manufacturers added 50,000 jobs last month, the most in a year.

In addition, retail sales rebounded last month after a sluggish holiday season. The gain suggests that the recent job growth is supporting more consumer spending.

Still, the job market has a long way to go before it fully recovers from the damage of the Great Recession. Nearly 13 million people remain unemployed. And 8.3 percent unemployment is still painfully high.

One reason the unemployment rate has fallen for five straight months is that many people have stopped looking for work. The government counts people as unemployed only if they are actively looking for a job.

Since this was first posted we've heard that they are likely counting part time workers that have no intention of finding full time work. there has also been the question of - are they counting people that are filling jobs opened due to retirement - THOSE AREN'T NEW JOBS CREATED!

As usual - flim flam at it's best...

I'll probably get crapped on for saying this, but most of the people that are not working are too proud (stupid) to take that minimum wage job until something better comes along. I am all for unemployment bennies for a TEMPORARY relief from lack of income, but come on people, if this country is going to get back on it's feet, we all have to pitch in and get off the government teat!! That means, take that job at 7-11, or Walmart or wherever they will hire you. My point being, the more we take care of ourselves the less we rely on the government, the closer we are to true freedom and independence.

You have pointed out the problem that lefties won't admit!
Couple that with - if ur drawing unemployment OR welfare, you should be performing some kind of service to community or government - painting buildings, offices, cleaning or maintaining parks and public areas - SOMETHING - to EARN the $$
04:03 PM on 02/17/2012
Most of the unemployed are not counted and a lot of jobs have disappeared from the numbers.
People I know have lost multiple jobs every year. Not getting any better.
That job at Walmart will always be there.

How about "typical republican" wanting people to work and earn a living, get promoted, move up to better jobs, pay taxes and live in nice homes.

"typical democrat" draw welfare, get foodstamps, be unemployed, vote for Dems that will GIVE you more...

There's more and more people that have been out of work for years so as that number grows, there's alot less people eligible for benefits.

Oh my God this is terrible news!....

I'm waiting for Fox to tell me why......
05:45 PM on 02/17/2012
I will tell you why the percent of the U.S. Population who have a job is at a record low. Now of course some shouldn't be employed kids the retired the injured but do you really think unemployment is going down. Real unemployment using the same math used to figure unemployment under all previous presidents except Obama is 11.3 even changing the rules they can't get below 8.7. If unemployment were figured the same way under bush unemployment would have been under 1.2%for 7 out of eight of bushes years. Obama is a failure and your fear of fox news is funny wouldn't want to hear both sides it might confuse you. I'm one of the doers in society I employ people and contribute to the economy. I support my family with no help from the government and pay most of the taxes I am the 1% no one gave me anything my dad worked for the state my mom was a teacher. I have 1 year of college so how did I achieve I worked 3 and 4 jobs and saved I bought a business and I invested in new technology life will give you 2 or 3 oportunitys if your prepared are you prepared.

Given your atrocious spelling and grammar, I doubt you had any college. However, I too was a business owner, worked several jobs at once and took care of my family before I retired. I live comfortably, pay my taxes (happily), and understand unemployment numbers, and yours are wildly inaccurate.

The percent of the U.S. population unemployed was considerably higher during the depression and was also higher under Reagan. The percent of unemployed under bush (the lesser) was never lower than 4.6% and the recession he caused resulted in the loss of 8.5 million jobs from 2007 - 2010.

You can fault Obama for many things, but, not for the recession nor the job losses it created. And like it or not, last month a NET 257,000 jobs were added.

And, if you watch Faux noise - you are not watching news. That is why they are not permitted to broadcast in Canada nor Europe. Their lies and misinformation are interesting fodder, but, not news. Faux's viewers are not the most misinformed (by study) for no reason.

Onca again we hear good news about the economy only to have it overshadowed by the claim that people have stopped drawing unemployment. In a part this is true but unemployment is dropping and new jobs are being added every month. The naysayers try and claim everything went wrong the moment the Democrats took control of Congress and will undoubtly claim that things only started to get better after the Republicans took back Congress. Its plain to anyone that dosent watch F A U X news that President Obama has managed (despite Congress) to pull us back from the brink of diaster. The Dow is over 12,000 and the outlook for job growth looks bright. Accept that Obama will be elected for a second term despite the Republicans creating illusionary hot button issues (birth control, health care, and Iran) to try and distract the voters from the economic turnaround Obama has managed. All we need now is to get the yahoos out of Congress and we can get back to doing real work for America.
06:00 PM on 02/17/2012
Unemployment is not going down in the u.s. We need to create 220,000 jobs just for the new people entering the workforce each month look back at numbers of new jobs and you will see they don't even cover that number. The Dow will go down slightly before the election because the dod amendment raised expenses for large companys like mcdonalds any one who has small debit transactions. The minimum charge went from 4 cents to 22 cents it almost bankrupted my company this will be fixed in April the fed now sets this rate. The dod amendment was meant to create a enemy those evil banks adding on fees to use our debit cards. But the banks turned it around on you talked fed into 22 cents when suggested minimum was 4 cents. On election day you will have high unemployment a down DOW and the disdain of the Christians for trying to force churches to pay for things they disagree with. It's been projected that the black vote will be week because of this they wont change party's but they are upset and will stay home. This coming election will be one for the record books.
11:59 PM on 02/17/2012
Maybe you should count the 10,000 a day that are reaching 65. How many is that a month? I'll be a smart wealthy guy like you can figure it out.

I hate to ruin the celebration for you Obama fanatics, but um, its jobless CLAIMS that have dropped. And you can B.S. yourself into thinking this is a good thing, but um unemployment benefits do run out. So what you have here is people without jobs who can no longer collect un employment. And let us not forget that it is tax return season, and this is a time for seasional employment. Thats why when it is Christmas season and they report a rise in jobs, then say the rate fell again when its over I wonder if the people reporting this are capible of common scence. I mean lets face the facts here people, I am a poor speller and this more of a marage than a sign of hope on the horizon. Thats not to say I am happy about this. It just means we still have work to do.

Tax Season? That is funny. In May/June you are going to be saying it is wedding season. In July/August you are going to be saying it is Iifeguard jobs. It September/October you are going to be saying it is back to school jobs. And you will continue to completely ignore that the numbers account for all seasonal factors.

Yes, the above refers to new weekly jobless claims, a number that is continually tracked. It refers to people who have lost their jobs each week for various reasons. Numbers in the 350K range are average for a good jobs picture. By comparison, numbers below 300K are rare.

Yes, there are people without jobs who cannot collect unemployment. Of course, there are always people in that situation. There are just more now because the overall jobs picture still needs to improve a lot. Note that not being able to collect unemployment affects those individuals lives, but it does not affect the unemployment numbers.

The jobs picture has been slowly improving for some time. In fact, it has been slowly improving since mid-2009 when it bottomed out. There have been 22 straight months of private sector job growth. Over the last few months the job market has been starting to gain more momentum. The recent numbers cited in the article above hint that the next jobs report will likely be good as well.

Time will tell if the report is better, but it is a fact that tax season and Christmas time do see a rise in employment. Christmas time due to needing extra staff to handle the rush of shoppers and tax season because again there is a rush of buisness. H&R Block is only open during tax return season ergo more jobs during that time period. There is no serious influx of lifeguard jobs as most places do not have them and those that do have them for certain hours during the day, and even then usuialy in conditions potentialy hazardus to swimmers. And back to school shopping tends to be broken down over summer break. Yes there may be a slight pick up related to places pandering to tourists, but that is localised to certain hot spots around the country were as Christmas time and tax return time are across the entire US.

At some point, businesses have laid off as many people as they can while still staying in business. Most sane observers of the economy understand what an illusory stat the jobless claims are. If they were factoring in those who have given up looking and came up with an algorithm we might have a better sense of unemployment in the country. This is not something to celebrate as a stand-alone stat. Bear in mind that the inflation stat we are supposed to take comfort from ignores, fuel, food, gasoline and electricity when announcing that we have no inflation. For those of you claiming that we can “Thank Obama!” can we also blame him for the employment rate of inner city Black males between the ages of 17 and 35? Are you thanking Obama for record foreclosures now that the class action law suits have been settled? Are you thanking him for the worst new housing sales since we have been keeping records? Take off your blinders folks…

Was that offered up as a poorly thought out apologia for the failing of Mr. Obama or as an acknowledgment that Mr. Bush went to war with the advice and consent of the Congress? Personally I didn't support either war as neither was ever elevated to that status by an actual Declaration. Then again, even his harshest critics have to admit that few presidents in our history have had to deal with a situation like the 9/11 attack. Mr. Bush has no shortage of failings but they do not excuse those of Mr. Obama.

"If they were factoring in those who have given up looking and came up with an algorithm we might have a better sense of unemployment in the country."

They started doing that in 1994. Before that time we had no idea how many had given up. In 1994 they started collecting additional information and tracking how many had stopped looking temporarily or long term and why. They started publishing alternate rates that included those people. The still publish the base rate because it is the one they have been publishing since the 1940s, but the other information is still available.

First, it was a staffer that made the comment about 8%, and they said it before he even took office. By the time he actually took office unemployment was already at 8% and dropping. It took a few months for ARRA to take effect. Of course, that bill was watered down and delayed by people who wanted to compIain about "voIcano monitoring". The full bill that was intended would have been even more useful.

Then there's reality.....

From the current BLS report

In January, 2.8 million persons were marginally attached to the labor force, essentially unchanged from a year earlier. (The data are not seasonally adjusted.) These individuals were not in the labor force, wanted and were available for work, and had looked for a job sometime in the prior 12 months. THEY WERE NOT COUNTED AS UNEMPLOYED because they had not searched for work in the 4 weeks preceding the survey.

True Unemployment = 15.1%: U-6 Total unemployed, plus all persons marginally attached to the labor force, plus total employed part time for economic reasons, as a percent of the civilian labor force plus all persons marginally attached to the labor force

Clearly the economy is going in the right direction. The naysayers can say what they want and spin the statistics any way they want, but it is clear that we are on our way to a full recovery.

That said, I still want the President to earn his reelection and debate Gingrich, who I am hoping will be the eventual nominee for the Republican Party. The President will have a definite edge over Gingrich but the debates would be worthy of being listened to. The President would have a "cakewalk" to reelection with any other Republican in my view.

"Most indicators are pointing in the same direction: a healthy job market," Lawson said. The additional jobs will provide more income for consumers and support greater spending, an importance source of growth."

How are gas, fuel, food and electricity prices in your town? We are hearing about $4.00 a gallon gas around the corner and maybe $5.00 per gallon by summer. Remember when Obama called $3.00 a gallon gas "A failure of leadership?" When voters decide on a second term for a president of either parry, they look at the real economy as it impacts them, not the vacuous theories of "experts." Sort of like "A recession is when your neighbor loses his job; a depression is when you lose yours..."

You wish it will be Gingrich, no surprise he is clearly not electable. Romney would appeal more to those in the center and they still decide who gets the seat not the far left or the far right. While nobody seems too excited about the candidates at this point the people are ready for a CHANGE. The biggest drop in the unemployment #s is not because of jobs added, its because of those that have quit looking.....soooooo those folks do not matter now? Where do they go? Is he able to just wish them away to the corn field? Talk about fiddling with the numbers.

The argument and statistics to the contrary refute what you stated as your quote shows below. As for Gingrich not being "electable" against the President-well, I am being honest, even as a Republican. It will be an Uphill battle for Any of the Republican Candidates to defeat President Obama for reelection. Gingrich is the best shot-but if he falls short at least he would have brought some semblance of sanity and reason to our Party as reason seems to have been thrown right out the window! The long numerous debates were a terrible idea to begin with and when a Candidate from the Republican Party is nominated in 2016, it is my hope that a valuable lesson would have been learned from the Awful Campaign and Mud Slinging of 2011/12!
