Steel beams crashed 40 stories at the construction site of the World Trade Center Thursday morning, crushing a flatbed truck and injuring one man.

Crane cables lifting the giant steel beams to the top of Tower 4 (which will be 72 stories tall) snapped at about 9:56AM, sending workers scrambling for safety.

Emergency personnel arrived minutes later and taped off the site of the accident, near Church Street and Cortlandt Street. The driver of the truck is being treated for minor injuries, My Fox New York reports. Other construction workers emptied out of the work area into Zuccotti Park.

Due to the FDNY investigation of the incident, there is no 1 train between Chambers Street and the Staten Island ferry.

A recent audit of the Port Authority discovered the cost of the World Trade Center project has soared to $14.8 billion.

There is no more World Trade Center, people! It's GONE! Remember...they pussed out and decided not to rebuild it? It is now The Freedom Tower. Let's start using the proper acronyms when addressing this construction site. The World Trade Center is DEAD!

I wonder if all of the posters here who say the site shouldn't be rebuilt are from NY or the surrounding area. I live 20 miles from NYC and could see the fire burning for weeks after 9/11. It's still hard to drive into the city and see the hole in the skyline where the beautiful towers used to stand. I also lost friends that day and thank God many more friends escaped the attack. Rebuilding that site is vital to the heart and soul of NY and our area. The fact that the Port Authority has made it a financial boondoggle doesn't mean the site shouldn't be rebuilt. Most of the people I know who were in the towers that day are for the rebuilding. I haven't been down there in a few years, but am looking forward to seeing the 9/11 Memorial and the progress they are making. It's encouraging to drive into the city now and seeing the new tower rising.

I don't know. I used to live in NY and I continue to have mixed feelings to this day. It building the new tower a sign of resilience? Yes. However, it just seems like parking a new battleship right over the Arizona other days. As much as the altered skyline bothers me to this day, the new tower just feels like an even sharper reminder of Towers 1

It's haunted!!!! Was there that morning and ran for my life. Unfortunately, many of my co-workers were not as lucky. I believed then and will always believe those grounds will be haunted. There is NOT enough money in the world that would get me to work there again after what happened.

good thing they cleared out Zuccotti Park...
01:44 PM on 02/17/2012
The construction workers would have taken care of that. Faster than the City did.
