Apple Nears 25 Billion Apps Downloaded: Here's What's In It For You

Apple Apps Downloaded

Apple's App Store is inching toward an impressive milestone: 25 billion downloaded apps.

Apple has set up a countdown clock monitoring its progress toward the eleven-digit figure, and currently counts 24,338,612,000 downloaded apps since the launch of the App Store in 2008.

In celebration of the milestone, Apple will award one person a $10,000 gift card to the App Store. By our count, that will buy you around 10,100 99-cent apps (or 10,100 copies of Angry Birds for all your friends), 5,025 $1.99 apps, and around 10 copies of BarMax, an app that costs $999.99. Apple users can win by purchasing or downloading an app, or by filling out an entry form (Read the find print on Apple's website here).

To put the 25 billion apps in perspective, consider that Apple celebrated the 10 billionth app download almost exactly a year ago (It also awarded a $10,000 gift certificate, though the woman who won it initially hung up on Apple by mistake, thinking it was a telemarketer rather than a bearer of good news).

As Inside Mobile Apps notes, in July of last year, Apple announced its App Store had surpassed 15 billion app downloads, which, according to Inside Mobile Apps, "[implies] that the iOS platform has on average seen about 1.5 billion downloads per month between then and now."

Apple said during its most recent earnings call that its App Store and iTunes Store together saw 140 million downloads on Christmas Day alone. Apple also announced that it had paid around $4 billion to app developers.

By comparison, around 11 billion apps have been downloaded from Google’s Android Market .

This would be impressive if most app developers put more than a single person's hobby time into their making. The reason there are so many on the Apple and Android markets is because the developers aren't making high quality products. It's like YouTube, sure they have millions of videos, but does anyone really think that actually puts a dent in just 10 professional movies worth millions a piece.

Sure, Apple has Billions of hobbyists making apps, but how many of those are really producing anything worth more than free.

It's impressive anyway.

And the fact that anyone with 100 bucks to spend on a developer's license can get their foot in the door is a good thing.

Some people develop crap, others strike gold, same as it ever was, but this time everyone can give it a shot.

Except you've always been able to give it a shot. MySQL has always been free. Microsoft development languages have been free for a long time as well as Java. A website only costs about $10 to get started, and a piece of normal software is completely free to make.. There have been free art programs for a long time. In reality it costs more to make an app than any other type of website or software. And if you check out the GNU code, you'll see that most of it has been given away for free for far longer than smart phones have been around. Its just that until the smart phone most hobbyists wanted to contribute to the community rather than strike it rich on some cheap app.

Including Navigon - by far the most expensive app on my phone - I probably have less than $100 of purchased apps.

Can't imagine what I'd do with a $10K gift card.  Which is probably what Apple is counting on.

Next time, text. :)

Congrats to Apple and to all the developers who make a living writing those apps.

I'm helping my Mom app her class lessons from her 40 years of teaching student nurses.

She's having fun doing it and I'm hoping to make her richer than she already is....

I'd need a minivan to carry all my apps if they were individual devices and books. Free unlimited calls to and from Vietnam is a tremendous money saver. So are the scanners.

Dell is looking into it too. I'm really glad that some of the other American electronics companies who use Foxconn are getting involved, as there are several of them. There was a Forbes article in January about how xbox workers at Foxconn threatened suicide over a pay dispute. I hope Microsoft is investigating this.
